OneSteel’s History

• OneSteel was created by combining 8 historically-diverse yet related businesses to form a vertically-integrated mining, steel manufacturing, & steel and metal products distribution company

• Formed from 8 Businesses ‘spun out’ from BHP Steel

• OneSteel Ltd is a publicly listed company on ASX – 23 Oct 2000

• OneSteel became a Top 100 company on ASX - 25 October 02

• Appointment of new CEO 2 May 2005

• OneSteel became a Top 60 company on ASX - August 2007

Whyalla Steel WorksProject Magnet

$385 million project to develop existing magnetite resources called “Iron Magnet” in the South Middleback Ranges

Completion expected in the first quarter of the next financial year

Extends life of Whyalla Steelworks from 2020 to at least 2027

Converted Whyalla Steelworks to process magnetite

Export facility constructed at the existing iron ore jetty

Incremental sales of iron ore, pellets and slab to generate over $1billion in revenue over 10 years

Significant value in use - potential to lower Whyalla’s steelmaking cost by up to 5%

APPRENTICESHIPS

• July 2006 established a Skills Centre in partnership with TAFESA

• Pre Voc not a requirement• Intake 50 apprentices per year• Employed full time as OneSteel employees

from day one but for the first 12 months working full time at the Training Skills Centre at TAFE under OneSteel Supervision

• Not a OneSteel Centre but an industry centre

APPRENTICESHIPS

• TAFESA had to be different– OneSteel H&S rules– 8am until 5pm– Trades skills to OneSteel’s requirements –

adapted the apprenticeship to meet our needs

– Rigour and discipline– Operate like a business, not a Government

agency– Staff had to wear appropriate safety personal

protective equipment– Staff had to lead by example.
