PARTNERSHIP PLAN

Let’s walk for life

Page 2: Partnership Plan - The Kidney Walk 2015

A word about The Kidney Foundation of CanadaWhen the Foundation was founded in 1964, organ transplants were still experimental, only a few hospitals offered hemodialysis treatments for end-stage renal failure and access to the treatments were strictly regulated by selection committees. The Foundation went into action: it set about raising public awareness of renal failure, campaigned for more treatment centres and, of course, promoted and supported research on kidney transplants. Ever since, The Kidney Foundation of Canada has created many programs, including short-term financial assistance for patients in need, a wide range of informative documents on kidney disease, scientific training and education for specialized researchers, a website on nutrition for patients on a special diet because of their health and summer camps for kids on dialysis and young transplant recipients, which also give their parents a break.

Major discoveriesSince it was created in 1964, The Kidney Foundation of Canada has provided over $110 million for research, leading to the discovery of new medicines and treatments and improved transplant techniques. In fact, it’s thanks to this research that the kidney has become the most grafted organ and that kidney transplants now have the highest success rate of all transplants. This success is due in no small part to the many discoveries of our home-grown researchers: better anti-rejection drugs, the discovery of antibodies and improvements to dialysis treatments. These medical advances have led to a better quality of life for thousands of Quebecers suffering from kidney failure.

Partner with a crowd-pleasing annual event! The Kidney Walk will be held on Sunday, May 24, 2015, in 20 cities across Quebec. This non-competitive five-kilometre walk brings together all those affected by kidney disease to promote organ donation and celebrate the progress that has been made in the field of kidney health.

Across Quebec, thousands of walkers—kidney patients, dialysis patients, transplant recipients, living donors, health professionals and Foundation supporters—take part in this popular fundraiser.

In the past three years, we have doubled both the number of participants and the revenues generated by the Walk.

In this spirit, we are seeking to raise over $500,000 in 2015 by continuing to boost participation.

Ranking among the Foundation’s most successful events, the hugely popular Walk helps raise more funds for research, for improving patient quality of life and for promoting organ donation.

became law in December 2010.

• Since 2012, the Quebec Branch of The Kidney Foundation of Canada has been advocating for an increase in the number of kidney transplants.
