WE HAVE MUCH TO CELEBRATE at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, and you, as a sup-porter of the hospital, have played an important role.

On January 21, the St. Francis Hospital Open Heart Surgery Program at Good Sam celebrated its one year

anniversary. To date, more than 300 open heart surgeries have been performed, and a Brave Hearts group to support

our patients and their loved ones has recently been formed. Longtime Foundation Board member Aileen Eppig and past open heart patient Patrick Kelly co-chair this special group and lead a growing team of grateful and dedicated volunteers.

To continue to meet the needs of the community, we recently added a third Cardiac Catheterization Lab to the Theresa Patnode Santmann Division of Cardiovascular Ser-vices. Our new lab provides access to advanced care and features state-of-the-art equip-ment and technology. In fact, we are the first hospital in the New York Metro Region to possess the Innova® IGS 520 digital cardiovascular and interventional imaging system.

This spring not only brought flowers and sunshine, but also the completion of nine new patient care rooms in our expanded Mother-Baby Unit. The new Unit is a truly special space for mothers and babies to spend the first days after birth bonding in beautifully decorated private suites.

We also received word that our cancer program has been accredited by the Ameri-can College of Surgeons’ Commission on Cancer as a Comprehensive Community Oncology Program – with commendation, for an unprecedented fourth consecutive time, twelve years in a row.

These are just a few recent developments, but every day our family of staff, both clinical and administrative, is working to make Good Samaritan the best possible resource to meet all of your family’s health needs. Your generosity and ongoing support contribute directly to our ability to provide the very best care to our patients while improving the health of the community.

Thank you for being our partners in caring.

New Mother Baby Unit IntroducedIn March 2015, Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center opened its new Mother Baby unit. Here, mothers and newborns remain together in private rooms for their entire hospital stay. For the nearly 2,800 babies delivered at Good Sam each year, this approach offers several benefits, including enhanced mother-baby bonding.

“This newly designed unit exceeds all expectations in quality health care and is why so many families have entrusted Good Samaritan Hospital with their deliveries and babies.” —JOHN J. VULLO, DO Attending Physician, Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology; Associate Director, Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program

GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITAL RECEIVES FOURTH CONSECUTIVE OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT AWARD FOR CANCER PROGRAM

Good Samaritan Hospital, the diagnostic and treatment center of choice for thousands of patients, has recently earned its fourth con-secutive Outstanding Achievement Award from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer—one of only six facilities in the state

to earn this honor in 2014. A facility receives the Outstanding Achieve- ment Award following on-site evaluation by a physician surveyor during which the facil-ity demonstrates a

commendation level of compliance with seven standards that repre-sent the full scope of the cancer program and, in addition, a compliance rating for the remaining 29 standards.

Approval by the Commission on Cancer is given only to those facilities that have voluntarily committed to provide the best in diagnosis and treatment of cancer. Good Samaritan undergoes a rigorous evaluation process and review of performance every three years to maintain this prestigious standing.”—KENNETH GOLD, MD, Chairman of the Cancer Committee; Chief of Hematology/Oncology

DONOR SPOTLIGHT

CHARLOTTE SOPER • ISLIP, NY“I give to Good Sam because it feels like home. The staff make me feel like family, and that is reflected in the kind and sincere care that they provide to all patients regardless of race, religion or creed. Each month I send a check in memory of a cherished member of my family. I know that Good Samaritan will deliver the best possible care in their memory. For as long as I live, I will support the hospital. We all have the ability to give love and make a difference. This is my way of doing just that.”

Girl Scout Troop Donates Handmade Hats and Blankets to Babies AT GOOD SAMARITAN HOSPITALGirl Scout Troop 3688 from Babylon recently donated knitted hats, booties and fleece blankets to babies in Good Samaritan Hospital’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) as part of their Bronze Award. They made more than 150 hats and 20 pairs of booties and will continue to work on more.

Grateful Brother Donates to Good Samaritan Hospital FoundationRecent West Islip High School graduate Sean Wilson collects loose change donated by neigh-bors and patrons at local establishments to give back to the hospital that saved his brother’s life.

Through his recent “Change for Children” fundraiser he collected nearly $2,400 to benefit Good Samaritan Hos-pital’s pediatric depart-ment, where his brother,

Christopher, spent six weeks in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, the first 11 days in a coma. In 2012, Christopher was critically injured after being hit by a car while walking to school.

Three years later, thanks to the support of his family and health care providers, he has finished his first year of college and has made a remark-able recovery.

For as long as I live, I will support the hospital. We all have the ability to give love and make a diference. This is my way of doing that.”

“I HAVE CARVED YOU IN THE PALM OF MY HAND.” ISAIAH 49:15

The Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation has recently launched a Brave Hearts group to support our open heart patients and their loved ones. This group is volunteer-led and chaired by Foundation Board member Aileen Eppig and open heart patient Pat Kelly. The purpose of this special group is to help support patients through the process of having Open Heart Surgery – from first diagnosis to post-operative recovery and beyond.

For an annual donation of $15, Brave Hearts members have access to a “HeartLine” phone listing of past open heart patients who are willing to speak with new open heart

patients about their experi-ences, a semi-annual newsletter, and special events and programs.

Donations enable the Brave Hearts to visit open heart patients at bedside post-surgery and present them with a special certifi-cate signed by Christopher La Mendola, MD, Chair of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center and Director of the St. Francis Open Heart Surgery Program at Good Samaritan.

Good Samaritan Gets SplashedIn February, Good Samaritan celebrated and dedicated four new priceless works of art done by Splashes of Hope and commissioned and gifted to the hospital by generous benefactor Theresa Patnode Santmann. The murals were designed to soothe and calm patients.

The new murals adorn the walls of Good Samaritan’s Theresa Patnode Santmann Interventional Cardiology Center as well as the St. Francis Hospital Open Heart Surgery Unit at Good Sam. One of the murals is based on a picture taken by local resident and Babylon and Beyond photographer, Vicki Jauron.

In March, the Child Life program at Good Samaritan Hospital celebrated its 10th anniversary. To cele- brate, the hospital hosted a Teddy Bear Clinic for Brownie Troop #3809 from West Islip. The clinic “admits” teddy bears to the hospital, and through the use of play therapy, the children describe their

bears’ mock injuries or illnesses. The program is designed to help put chil-dren at ease when they visit the hospital. More than 140 children were able to experience the simu-lated visit and received their own bear generously donated by Sayville resi-dent and Good Samaritan benefactor Kay Porter.

Garden Party Luncheon RaisesMoney for Mother and Baby CareOn Tuesday, June 2, Jean Grunwald and Terese Weber hosted a Garden Party Lun-cheon at Timber Point in Great River. More than 100 guests attended the event and the proceeds will benefit Mother and Baby Care at Good Sam. The afternoon included summer fashion previews, floral arrangement demonstrations, gardening tips, raffles, and door prizes. Attendees also learned about the future of women’s health at Good Sam and received a free swag bag filled with goodies and giveaways.

Guilds Support Surgical Intensive Care& Emergency ServicesThe Guilds of Good Samaritan Hospital recently presented $80,000 to the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation to benefit the Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) and Emergency Department (ED). These donations will enhance surgical services by supporting the acquisitions of an Arctic Sun tem-perature management system as well as 12 new stretchers for the ED.

“Since before the hospital officially opened, our volunteers were hard at work fundraising and friend raising for Good Samaritan. Today, our volunteers take great pride in providing equipment that helps keep Good Samaritan at the top. Through good times and bad, Good Samaritan has touched the lives of our volunteers, and they are committed to giving their time, talent and treasure to the hospital.” — MARIE NICHARICO, Central Council of the Guilds President
