In 2017, EASA Denmark has been given the great opportunity to host

the annual European Architecture Students Assembly in Fredericia. Our vision for

the event is to engage the EASA community in an architectural discussion of the

theme: Hospitality - Finding the Framework. The theme will be explored through

workshops and lectures.

We envision EASA 2017 to be a catalyst of a change, a testbed for

architectural innovations and discoveries, which can start the process of

implementing problem-driven solutions in the urban environment of Fredericia.

This will be achieved by the international architecture students, who

will take part in the event and contribute to the workshops in cooperation with

local community. EASA 2017 intends to address different groups of Fredericia’s

citizens, current and future, as well the visitors from other parts of Denmark and

abroad.

What is EASA?EASA [European Architecture Students Assembly] is the biggest architecture students’ network reaching all over Europe. It is a platform for architecture students to share thoughts, ideas and methods across borders and cultures. Our common language is architecture in all its shapes and sizes.

Every summer EASA gathers around 500 students of architecture from more than 40 countries and 200 different schools of architecture. For over two weeks the architecture students, graduates and tutors live, learn and create together, - being involved in various practical and theoretical workshops held by skilled tutors, accompanied by lectures by locally and internationally acclaimed architects.

What makes EASA unique is the fact that is run by students for students. This allows for ideas and thoughts to take shape in a free and open environment, where experimentation and innovations are the key drivers of the event. EASA has existed since 1981 and is a well-known and respected event within the European architectural community.

2017 Fredericia, Denmark: Hospitality - Finding the framework

Denmark is one of the pioneering EASA countries. Danish team was involved in EASA since the very beginning and was one of the first EASA organizers, arranging fourth EASA in Århus in 1984. Since that time EASA came back to Denmark every decade: in 1984, 1997,

2003 and 2017.

PlaceFredericia, Denmark Fredericia is located in the southeastern part of the Jutland peninsula in a sub-

region known locally as Trekanten, or The Triangle. Fredericia is located near the country’s main motorway intersection, which connects both the east-west and the north-south directions.

The distinctive feature of Fredericia’s city center is clearly defined physical boundary – the historic ramparts. The ramparts have confined the center to a small

area of 1 x 1 km (100 ha), which is divided into a well-preserved original grid structure. In a Northern Europe context, it is unique.

Fredericia has its particular history, culture and identity, which takes as its starting point some historical elements:

• diversity, which can be traced to the city’s founding in 1650, where people with different backgrounds were invited to settle in the city;

• military history, which is based on different battles, which took place here;

• intensive industrialization in XX century. Fredericia has in fact been hosted industrial companies longer than many other Danish cities.

“..with the city submerged in changes, there is room for architects to redifine, how it can welcome the future.”

ThemeHospitality - Finding the framework

The theme is an important part of the event, it works as a frame and defines the direction for the participants, on its basis they think, research and create.

The theme “Hospitality. Finding the framework” resonates with the history of Fredericia and the challenges the city now faces, as well as it relates to the current political situation in Europe and the world.

The theme is divided into two practical sub-themes, linked to research on hospitality and to endeavors of finding a framework for it. These follow the classical division of EASA workshops into theoretical, practical and workshops, which combine the two parts of the theme.

Today world faces a crisis of hospitality. We see that hospitality is commercialized, which implies that all newcomers or people with different demands need to pay for help or be outcasted. To respond this, we need to understand and implement in the current social framework universal and enforceable concepts of hospitality. We believe that only through an ongoing process of formal and informal interactions within and between individual communities and different cultures, new humanity will emerge.

Architects are believed to be in charge of the form of the built environment, not its content. Nevertheless, architectural framework affects content. Through architecture we understand how new forms can make a difference for the progress of world civilization. In this world of obliged and desired mobility, the way we welcome each other is essential. Our cities need to be open and friendly for social diversity as we are when we welcome guests to our homes.

Architects through environment may construct the framework of hospitality, and provide solutions for social mistrust, fragmentation and atomization. Therefore, we see hospitality as our goal, framework as our tool and architecture as our method.

“We need a more robust vision of a common humanity: one in which ancient customs of hospitality are not subjugated to the protection of states’ sovereignty”.

PeopleEASA community The are different people who make EASA happen: organisers, national contacts,

participants, tutors and helpers.

The organizing process is run by volunteers, who make the core of the assembly by combining the location and theme, finding partners and sponsors. The EASA Denmark 2017 organizing team consists of 12 international architecture students, chosen by EASA community to organize the assembly. The team is made up by a vast mix of Scandinavian and International EASians all joining forces to bring EASA to Denmark for the fourth time. A team created in the EASA spirit, with a combination of experienced EASA veterans and new energetic aspiring faces.

During the event, the organizing team will be enforced by helpers. Helpers are usually old EASians, helping at the info desk, lending tools and working in the bar.

National Contacts (NC’s) are the life blood of the EASA network, it is only through the NC’s that EASA exists and is the reason why the network is now in its 35th year. Being an NC is a voluntary role, they are responsible for promoting EASA within their country and perform a number or tasks year round and during events.

The backbone of the assembly are the tutors, who run various workshops selected among all the received proposals. They coordinate and lead participants in their work and oversee the results.

Last but not least are the participants, the biggest group of people at EASA, which represent almost 50 countries around Europe and abroad. They live, work and have fun together for two weeks.

Hospitality revolves around people, and finding the architectural framework around the term will require architectural, design and theoretical projects, that engage the local community in dialogue and collaborations thereby establishing new networks and ownership. Therefore, EASA 2017 project will be implemented in close cooperation with citizens, Fredericia Kommune, local, regional and national organizations and associations.

EASA starts with the workshop presentation. Participants learn about all planned workshops and choose one they like best. Then the “everyday” EASA life begins. These days starts at about 9am with breakfast and are followed by workshops through the day. Excursions, sports activities and pop-up workshops are arranged in between to keep the spirit of interaction alive. Upon the second weekend of every EASA, we uphold the tradition of National Evening. It’s a consistent highlight of every EASA where each nation will prepare a stall to share the flavours and experience of their home country. EASA ends with the workshop exhibition when EASA participants, local community and visitors are able to walk around the city and see all the projects done for the two weeks period.

The costs of EASA events are partially covered by participation fees and partly through institutions, which support science, research, art and culture. Being a sponsor of an EASA event means supporting a leading international network in this field, providing students of architecture an incomparable chance to interact with colleagues from different cultural and ideological spheres. In this way, com-panies and institutions have the opportunity to get near students who under-stand the concept of globalization and internationalization, knowledge sharing, understand architecture, art and their implementation. The participants of an EASA event are students and young architects, who are active and progressive in their profession.
