  • Slide 2
  • The Early Grades are a Critical Time for Learning A student who cant read on grade level by 3 rd grade is four times less likely to graduate by age 19 than a child who does read proficiently by that time. American Educational Research Association Early intervention is the most cost effective approach to closing the achievement gap. Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) Infobrief Investments in early education programs offer a return of $1.80 to as much as $17.07 for every $1.00 spent. RAND (2005) Study
  • Slide 3
  • Early Educators Face Many Challenges MORE pressure to: Ensure all students are on track before 3rd grade Differentiate instruction & meet RTI demands But NOT ENOUGH: Time to evaluate & address individual needs Actionable data to inform instruction Resources to engage parents Support for English Language Learners Valid & reliable tools aligned to Common Core or state standards
  • Slide 4
  • How can we help all of our youngest students succeed? We need to be able to answer 2 critical questions about each student: Guide instruction throughout the year Is this student growing as expected? What skills has this student developed & what is she ready to learn next? Growth Skill Development
  • Slide 5
  • MAP for Primary Grades MPG Adaptive test to assess growth from one term to the next and obtain learning statements to identify what the student is ready to learn MPG: Skills Checklist Assess knowledge of a specific skill before or after teaching it (38 skills to choose from in mathematics and reading) MPG: Screening Get baseline information for a new student who is in the earliest stages of learning, particularly a kindergarten or pre-K student Has this student mastered this specific skill? Where can this student be placed? Is this student growing as expected?
  • Slide 6
  • The Test MAP for Primary Grades (adaptive) Measures growth in reading and mathematics skills Usually administered 3x/year Screening Tests (diagnostic) Assess basic letter/number skills Skills Checklist Tests (diagnostic) Assess development in a specific literacy/numeracy skill MPG: 3 types of assessments All 3 are included in the MPG package

  • AssessmentType# Questions/TimeDetails MPG for Primary Grades (Survey with Goals) *Adaptive *Scored on RIT Scale *Large item pool *Question doesnt repeat 1 year *52 Math *48 Reading *50-60 minutes per subject Give 3 X a year Audio Measures Growth in Math & Reading Instructional insight to the goal strand level Skills Checklist Tests*Diagnostic *Scored as a % *Smaller item pool *Same questions each time in random order 10 Reading Checklists (16-54 items in each) 28 Math Checklists (12-39 items in each) *Approximate 10- 30 minutes per skill Give as a Pre / Post Test only, not repeatedly because of limited # of questions Focuses on a single specific skill that assesses development in a specific literacy/numeracy skill Audio 3 Types of Assessments Within MPG Screening Test*Diagnostic *Scored as a % *Smaller item pool *Same initial questions but second half in random order *33 Reading *34 Math *Time on Test 15- 30 minutes Give once at the end of pre- K or when a student enters kindergarten Assess basic letter and number skills Audio

  • Getting the Most from MPG Screening Give once at the end of pre-K or when a student enters kindergarten Can give to all kids or one if unsure of their level. Screening is not about testing more, dont have to test whole class Can provide a baseline of information for new students in the earliest stages of learning as young as Pre K
  • Slide 11
  • Getting the Most from MPG Screening Not associated with a test window Limited pool of questions compared to MPG Assess very basic letter/number skills Diagnostic = no RIT score, just % score Quick to take: 15-30 minutes

  • Getting the Most from MPG Skills Checklist Provide info about specific skills and concepts Use in addition to MPG to work on specific goals revealed in MPG results Give as a Pre / Post Test only, not repeatedly because of limited # of questions Goes beyond screening Diagnostic = no RIT score, just % score Untimed but can take up to 30 minutes- average student finishes in 15 minutes Not associated with a test window

  • Skills Checklist Reading Test Functionality The Reading Skills Checklist will randomly present all the test items in the assessment to each student.
  • Slide 31
  • Skills Checklist Math Test Functionality The Math Computation Skills Checklist will randomly present items and automatically stop after the first 10 items if the student is not scoring at least 60% at that point in the test. Students who answer 60% or more of the first 10 items will see the remaining items on the test. This will give the teacher the maximum amount of information about which Math concept the student does and does not understand in the various subgoals without frustrating the lower performing students.

  • 50% Correct, 50% Incorrect For Students Explain to students that they will get some questions right on MAP and some wrong. For Teachers Scoring on Client Server is not an average but an algorithm as if the two tests were given as one in a single setting. Once both tests are uploaded (and they are taken within 28 days of one another) the tests are rescored following maximum likelihood.

  • Recommended Transitioning from MPG to MAP 2-5 NWEA recommends the following for consideration when making the decision to transition students from MPG to MAP 2 5. Can the student read with enough fluency to receive an accurate and valid score on the MAP 2 5 Reading assessment? Has the student been exposed to the content that will be tested in MAP 2 5? Is the student scoring 190 on the MPG Reading test or 200 on the MPG Mathematics test?
