Superintendent News August 2020

This summer has been great!! We have gotten good rainfall. We have good definition between the rough and the fairways. We have plenty of grass. All the thin areas are almost back, and the course looks awesome. BUT, there is still a lot of work to do. I am in the process of getting prices for several small projects to add to the list to enhance the golf course. Mainly tree work and grass projects. You’ll notice on the #8 red tee and #14 blue tee, we have replaced the Bermuda with Zoysia grass. There were 2 choices, remove the trees or the grass. I did not think removing the trees would be the best option due to their location. Number 14 blue tee we only re-grassed half the tee. When we re-grassed #8, there was some extra grass leftover, that is when we decided to do the back of #14 tee. I would like to see how it does, considering how many divots get taken from that tee box each day. Just a little test plot. Any questions, please stop and ask,

Chris Purvis

BERKELEY SENIOR CORNER - August 2020

Golf is not immune to the pandemic. At all levels, many sports are being impacted with athletes testing positive for COVD19. This includes golfers and caddies being forced to drop out of tournaments and self-quarantined for a couple of weeks and have a negative test for the virus before they can return to competition. At Berkeley, we have had a couple of incidents, including one of our support staff testing positive. Even practicing social distancing, there continues to be risk of infection. For us seniors, we are especially vulnerable. We need to listen to our medical and scientific experts to practice the 3 “W’s” (Wear a face mask, wash hands and watch distances). Now that we have golfers sharing a cart, wearing a face mask during the ride to your next shot is telling your riding companion that you are looking out for their protection. We are aware that the Ansley Country club has closed completely because of a large number of their members and staff have tested positive. Your job is to protect your fellow members. This is not a political issue; this is a public health issue. If we all continue to do our part can we can safely escape from sheltering in place at home and enjoy the game we love at Berkeley.

North Atlanta Senior Men’s Golf Association Cancels Tournaments for 2020 – Play Days Scheduled. All of the 8 scheduled tournaments for 2020 have been cancelled to comply with government restrictions related to the COVD19 Pandemic. None of the clubs are equipped to handle 90 to 100 golfers while still maintaining social distancing, individ-ual carts, meals and have the appropriate number of staff to pull it off. NASMGA Play Days: A number of clubs have offered to host up to 48 golfers on their course. Starting with Indian Hill CC on Monday 8/3/20 based on a first come first served. Tee times beginning at 9:00 A.M and the Cost $40.00 including carts. If you wish to play that course you must go on the www.nasmga.com website and sign up. It is open now. It will close on Friday, July 31.

The next event is at Eagle Watch CC on Monday, 8/17 and sign up will begin on Monday, August 3. Other clubs on tap for the future are Woodmont CC on Monday 9/21, White Columns CC on Wednesday 10/14 and Big Canoe on Monday 10/26. The cost and number of players will vary. We will notify all Berkeley BSMGA members of other future events as they are scheduled.

Match Play: Berkeley loss at home against Indian Hills CC.Match Play Captain Barry Lakas reported “Unfortunately we lost our home match to Indian Hills B. We took 7.5 points and In-dian Hills BB took 10.5 points. There were some great performances though; Mike Black and assistant pro Drew Lagan took all 3 of their points while Paul White and Ed Odmark also took 3 points. Mike Black had a hole-in-one on the 8th hole. Great shot Mike! Other matches were close and a lot of our players had good rounds but as most of you know- one or two holes lost can make a big difference in a match.” Next match is a HOME match against Brookfield on August 5. Eighteen clubs will participate in 3 divisions of 6 teams each. Berkeley is in the Masters Division with Polo, Brookfield, Olde Atlanta, Fairways of Canton and Indian Hills. The schedule has been shortened to 4 preliminary matches, 2 will be at home and 2 away, the last 2 matches are as follows:August 5 Brookfield at Berkeley, September TBD Berkeley at Polo

Once the reduced schedule has been completed, 8 teams will qualify for the playoffs. Teams finishing first and second in the three divisions qualify and two third place teams scoring the most points will qualify as wildcards.
