WELCOME TO RUNNING START
The EWU Running Start program is the largest in the state among the 4-Year public universities. We have seen
continued growth since 1992. The Running Start program here at EWU is unique in that we offer one-on-one
academic advising each quarter. Each student is assigned a Running Start advisor who guides them in choosing the
correct classes for high school graduation, but also classes that will help them either find a major or get a head start
on their Bachelor’s degree.
Some other areas where EWU stands apart from other institutions offering Running Start is that EWU does not
award AA degrees. When students start Running Start at EWU they are starting their Bachelor’s degree. On average,
each major requires 70 credits of general education. If a student attends even part time at EWU, they can easily
complete two years of their Bachelor’s degree. If a student chooses to attend full time and earn the full 90 credits
they not only have competed all of their general education requirements, but also 20 credits into their intended
major. EWU Running Start also provides free STA bus transportation and offers a book loan program for eligible
students. We also offer workshops on financial aid, career services, and academic success. One benefit to taking
classes here is that Running Start students receive Priority Registration allowing them to register for classes before
the general student population. This assures students that they will get the courses they need for high school
graduation. The Running Start club pairs current Running Start students with current EWU students who
participated in our Running Start program.
The Running Start office is here to help your students find success at EWU. They are in continuous contact with
their high school counselors. If a student is not finding success, they work with the high school counselors to get
them back into their regular classes at the high school. Each quarter grades are submitted to the high school
counselors through the mail. This seems to be the preferred method of the majority of counselors we work with.
Know that if your student chooses to participate in EWU Running Start, they will be well taken care of. They will
take the correct courses, school counselors will be continuously informed about student issues, and students will
have a place to go if they need help or have questions.
If at any time you have questions or concerns, please contact the Running Start office.
Sincerely,
The Running Start Team
6

Tuition costs will be paid by your school district for a maximum of 15 credits of college level courses per quarter.
Any pre-college courses, below 100 level and credits above the 15 paid by your school, will be the responsibility of
the Running Start Student. Students will also be responsible for any additional course fees, such as lab fees
(Appendix A). The Running Start office pays or waives the standard University fees. The exception is if you register
for more credits than you are eligible to take. You will pay prorated University tuition & fees on those credits.
In order to remain in the tuition “free zone”:
8
BOOK LOAN
If you qualify*, you can apply to be part of our book loan program. This program allows you to check out your
textbooks from the Running Start office. The book loan program will cover all of your general education classes. If
you are taking a specialized class you will be responsible for purchasing those books. Once you have been approved
for the program, you do not need to reapply.
HOW TO APPLY: Contact Kristi at the Running Start office. She will get you the application and answer any
questions you may have. There are application deadlines. If you miss a deadline you will be eligible the following
quarter.

TRANSPORTATION, BUSES AND PARKING
Running Start students that have an EagleCard may use the STA busses for free transportation to and from the
Eastern campus. This also allows you transportation throughout Spokane. If they will be driving to the campus,
parking permits are available at Parking Services at 131 Tawanka Hall.
FERPA
Eastern Washington University follows federal guidelines (FERPA – Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of
1974) concerning student privacy rights. Faculty will not discuss a student’s progress with anyone without the
student’s written permission. Parents will not have access to student records without the student’s written
permission. Parents should not contact EWU faculty on their student’s behalf. It is the student’s responsibility to ask
questions.
RUNNING START ADVISOR
Upon admission into the program, students will be assigned an advisor who will work with them throughout their
time as a EWU Running Start student. The advisor will meet with students through face-to-face advising each
quarter, as well as any time in between as needed. Not only will they help students with scheduling classes that will
meet their high school and university requirements, they will also offer support with challenging classes, advice on
how to communicate with professors, address other issues that arise, and of course celebrate their successes.
ADVISING
It is required that students meet with their Running Start advisor at least once per quarter. We recommend that
students contact their advisor anytime they have a question or concern by either email, phone or stopping by the
office. The Running Start office is open Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Walk-ins are welcome.
The advisors are here to help students navigate EWU and college life. They will help students plan their courses,
keep in contact with their high school counselor, and help them plan their academic future. The main goal is to make
sure students are successful, but also to insure that students are taking the correct classes.
QUARTERLY ADVISING APPOINTMENTS
MAKING AN APPOINTMENT: Students can schedule their quarterly advising appointment online or by calling the
Running Start office at 509-359-6155. We use SignUp Genius for online appointment scheduling. Students can access
their advisor’s appointment calendar by following the link sent to their Eagles email address, following the correct
link on our website under “Make Your Advising Appointment”, or by logging into their SignUp Genius account.
DURING THEIR ADVISING APPOINTMENT: Plan the next quarter and which classes they need to take according
to their high school’s graduation plan; develop a tentative quarter schedule for Priority Registration; receive a new
Enrollment Verification Form (EVF) to take to their high school counselor for signatures. This is also a great time to
talk with the advisors about their successes and any problems they may be having as a college student.
10
REGISTERING FOR CLASSES
After the quarterly advising appointment and returning of the EVF on time, students qualify* for priority
registration. During the two days of priority registration each quarter students will be able to register before the rest
of the students at EWU. This is a benefit in that they more than likely will get into the classes at the times they want.
If students miss priority registration or fail to return their EVF on time, they will have to register during the dates for
their class standing, making it more difficult to get the classes they want at the times they want. The exception is
students’ very first quarter as a Running Start student.
The first time students register as a Running Start student will be arrange through the Running Start office. After
students’ first quarter, they qualify for priority registration.
*Must have met with their advisor and returned their signed EVF form by the deadline.
GENERAL EDUCATION CORE REQUIREMENTS (GECRS)
EWU has designed the General Education Curriculum for the purpose of preparing students with the skills, habits of
mind and breadth of subject matter that characterize an educated person. Students will complete eight general
education core requirements (GECRs) and six university competency requirements, totaling at least 70 credits. These
courses match well with students’ high school requirements and include humanities and fine arts, the social sciences
and the natural sciences, math, English, computer literacy, cultural and gender diversity, and international studies.
11
RUNNING START ONLINE
Students may take courses online. Students who are successful online are self-motivated, organized, and can learn
independently. The policies and procedures are exactly the same as Running Start students attending on campus.
Some exceptions are that students who are only taking online classes do not qualify for the book loan program and
their registration procedures vary slightly. Students will get specific instructions from their advisor.
PROGRAM COMPARISONS – WHICH PROGRAM(S) ARE RIGHT FOR YOUR
STUDENTS?
Program Benefits Things to Consider
Running Start on Campus*
The Running Start program
allows academically
qualified 11th- and 12th-
graders the opportunity to
enroll in certain
Washington colleges for
college credit.
Students are regular college
students with the same
rights and responsibilities.
Students may participate in
college clubs, music and
drama activities, intramural
sports and programs and
may use campus services;
however, Running Start
students are not eligible to
participate on college sports
teams.
• Tuition is free; students/parents can save up to two
years in college tuition costs;
• Earn up to two years of college credit;
• Take a wide variety of classes that may not be
offered at the high school;
• Experiencing college classes while still in high
school can help in making future educational
plans;
• Gives academically qualified students opportunity
to take more challenging or advanced courses;
• Highly motivated, mature students may thrive in
the college environment;
• A diverse college student population provides a
rich learning environment;
• Testing is not required to earn credit; and
• Credits transferable to Washington State
universities and community colleges, as well as to
most other universities.
• Transportation arrangements, book purchases, and
class fees are the responsibility of the student;
• Scheduling of college classes may conflict with
some high school classes/activities;
• High schools provide a more of a social network
and experiences geared toward teenagers;
• Students who are academically ready may find the
required independence and speed of college classes
overwhelming; student’s maturity level should be
considered;
• Grades in college courses become a part of the
student’s permanent high school and college
records;
• Academic calendars are different, including
holidays, finals, and vacations; and
• May be exposure to alternative view points and
material of an adult nature in college classes.
Running Start Online*
Same as Running Start On-
Campus, but you attend
classes online either at your
high school or home or
anywhere you can connect
to the internet.
Must be a self-starter and
self-motivated. Much more
difficult than a traditional
class.
• Tuition is free;
• Take classes that may not be offered at the high
school;
• Students have opportunity to gain confidence as
they experience college-level curriculum;
• Gives academically qualified students opportunity
to take more challenging or advanced courses;
• Testing is not required to earn credit.
• Credits transferable to Washington State
universities and community colleges, as well as to
most other universities.
• Book purchases and class fees are the responsibility
of the student;
• Grades in college courses become a part of the
student’s permanent high school and college
records;
• Students who are academically ready may find the
required independence and pace of online classes
overwhelming; student’s maturity and motivation
levels should be considered; and
• Grades in college courses become a part of the
student’s permanent high school and college
records.
12
* The state allows students to enroll in up to 1.0 FTE tuition free. Your counselors and advisors will help make sure you remain in this “free
zone” each quarter. However, it is important that you communicate with both your high school counselor and EWU advisor regarding the
number of Running Start classes in which you are enrolled.
WHAT STUDENTS CAN DO TO BE SUCCESSFUL
USE YOUR EAGLES EMAIL
All EWU students are required to create and use an Eagles email account which will be the official communication
for all Eastern Washington University business. EWU Running Start students will set this up in their initial advising
appointment. The advisor will contact students through email.
MAKE AND KEEP ADVISING APPOINTMENTS.
Students will be notified by email when it is time to schedule advising appointments every quarter. At your advising
appointment, you will be planning your courses and filling out mandatory paperwork.
TURN IN PAPERWORK
The EWU Running Start Office has worked with local school districts to create Graduation Plans that reflect
approved course equivalencies. The Graduation plan is an important tool in your academic planning and it is essential
that it is filled out and returned to the Running Start office.
Students will be required under Legislation to pay for any course fee accrued as a result of exceeding the 1.2 FTE
limit combining high school and college coursework. Enrollment Verification Forms are filled out every quarter to
track student enrollment. Students are not allowed to register without an Enrollment Verification form on file in the
Running Start office.
GO TO CLASS EVERY DAY
It is their responsibility to be prepared for class and meet all course deadlines. Grades can be based on attendance and
participation. Late work is not always accepted. If they must miss class, it is their responsibility to catch up on
missing work and class notes. Some instructors drop students who fail to attend class on the first day of the quarter.
Advanced Placement (AP)
Students take rigorous
college-like courses while
still in high school.
• Rigorous courses introduce students to college-
level academics;
• Students may earn college credit and/or advanced
placement into upper-level college courses by
taking AP exams; and
• Many institutions recognize AP courses when
making admissions decisions.
• Students pay for end-of-course exams;
• College treatment of AP credit varies widely by
school; increasingly, students don't receive college
credit for high scores on AP exams; and
• There are no mandatory requirements for AP
teachers, so the quality of an AP course can vary
greatly.
13
UNDERSTAND THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIGH SCHOOL AND COLLEGE
High School College
Goals Goals
a) Earn good grades.
b) Prepare for graduation and college.
a) Prepare for a job in a given field.
b) Learn to become a professional
Resources Resources
a) High school instructor has gone to school to
learn how to teach.
b) Students have access to a high school library,
counselors, parents and teachers.
a) College instructor/professor has gone to school
to become a professional in a particular field of
study.
b) Students have access to hundreds of on-
campus resources tailored to specific areas of
study and demographics, such as first
generation, Latino, and students with
disabilities.
Approach Approach
a) Prepare for year-long assessments.
b) Students often spend more time in the
classroom and may be successful with less
study time outside of class.
c) Grades are earned through attendance, in-class
projects, homework and some test scores.
a) Study for lifelong knowledge and skills.
b) Two to three hours of out-of-class study time
is recommended for every one hour spent in
class to be successful.
c) Course grades are often more heavily
weighted on exams. Extra credit and makeup
work may not be accepted.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY
Running Start Students will be considered college students at EWU. Students will be expected to meet classroom
deadlines, come to class prepared, behave appropriately, and have the same level of classroom participation as any
other college student.
CLASS PACE
The pace at which college classes are taught is much faster than at high school. For example, for a RS student on
campus and online, a high school history class, which is usually taught in one year at the high school, is taught
within ten weeks at EWU.
14
HOMEWORK
College classes typically demand an average of at least two hours of homework for each hour of class.
ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION
In all of the RS programs, class attendance/participation is an integral part of the college coursework. Class time will
be spent going beyond basic comprehension. There is little time for faculty/teachers to stop and review lessons for
students who were absent from class. Please communicate with your professor or teacher if you have a planned
absence or when you return to class.
COLLEGE CALENDAR
The EWU calendar does not match the high school calendar. You must attend EWU classes when they are held,
even if your high school is not in session. For instance, EWU’s spring break will be at a different time than the high
school spring break.
GRADES
Grades earned from a EWU class are calculated into the high school GPA and will go onto your permanent college
transcript.
WITHDRAWAL PROCEDURES
Running Start students must meet with their EWU advisor to withdraw from a class. If you are taking only online
classes, you need to contact your advisor. Traditional on campus or online students must follow the university
calendar for Fall, Winter, and Spring Quarters.

TRANSFER OF COLLEGE CREDIT OBTAINED AT EASTERN WASHINGTON
UNIVERSITY
Eastern Washington University's transfer guide is a planning tool that helps you discover how your credits transfer to
EWU.
• The transfer guide has info for 84,000 courses from 6,300 institutions.
• The transfer guide only includes courses that have previously transferred to EWU. Your courses might not be
listed because no one has transferred them to EWU before.
• Not all courses are transferable.
• Eastern only accepts transfer credits from regionally accredited colleges and universities.
If you're wondering about a course that might count toward requirements for your major but you can't find that
particular course in the transfer guide, you should contact the department and ask about their transfer and
equivalency policies.
Running Start Credits: Credits earned under Running Start in the state of Washington are treated like any other
transfer credits.
EWU in the High School Credits: Freshman students with fewer than 40 transferable credits, including credits
earned through "college in the high school" programs, must meet freshman admission criteria. "College in the high
school" courses will be accepted as transfer credit if they are from a regionally-accredited college or university, and
are consistent with our general transfer credit policy.
Students and parents are advised to contact private and out-of-state colleges/universities of choice regarding
transferability of credits.
ORDERING TRANSCRIPTS
To order transcripts you can order them through your EagleNet account or by going to the university transfer page.

EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY STUDENT RECORDS POLICY
EWU in the High School students are considered Eastern Washington University students and are entitled to all
rights and responsibilities as matriculated students. More on academic records including:
• Your EWU Student Identification Number
• How to declare your major
• SOAR Degree Audit
• How the EWU grading system works
• How to get an enrollment verification
• How to order your EWU transcript
• How to change your name and/or address
• Your rights under FERPA
Since Running Start students are typically under the age of 18, students can choose to waive their FERPA rights in
regards to their EWU in the High School courses.
EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY GRADING POLICY
EASTERN OPERATES ON A QUARTER SYSTEM
• Fall quarter runs mid to late September and ends approximately the second week of December
• Winter quarter usually begins the first week of January and ends the latter part of March
• Spring quarter begins the end of March to the first week of April and continues through the second week of
June
• A summer session is held from the end of June to mid August; summer session is self-support for all course
work
COURSE NUMBERING SYSTEM
Lower Division
• 100-199 Primarily for freshman; may not be taken for graduate credit
• 200-299 Primarily for sophomores; may not be taken for graduate credit
Upper Division
• 300-399 Primarily for juniors and seniors
• 400-499 Primarily for seniors; graduate students may count a limited number of credits
• 500-699 Graduate level; undergraduates may enroll only with special permission from the Graduate Studies
Office
GPA AND EARNED HOURS
• Earned Hours (EHRS) represent the number of quarter credits earned at Eastern and include any transfer
credits awarded
• Grade Point Average (GPA)
• The GPA is computed by dividing the total number of quality points (QPTS) by the total number of GPA
hours. The hours for courses with blank grades or with grades of X, Y, P, NC and W are not included in the
quality hours or quality points. However, X grades that are not completed in the time limit set by the
19
instructor, are converted to a predetermined grade. If the grade is numeric, it is then calculated into the
GPA. Prior to fall quarter 1985, X grades were not automatically converted to a standard grade; grade change
forms are needed to update X grades posted prior to fall quarter 1985.
GRADE POLICY FOR REPEATED COURSES
If a course is repeated, the credit is awarded on the transcript for the last grade received. Transfer credit is not
included in the Eastern Washington University GPA.
ELIGIBILITY FOR DEAN'S LIST
An undergraduate student who earns 12 earned GPA hours and receives a GPA of 3.5 or better is placed on the
Dean's List for the quarter. If the student has placed a directory restriction on their records the name will not be
released for publication.
Grades at Eastern are reported in numerical fractions to the nearest tenth.

EASTERN WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC POLICY
EWU in the High School students are held to the same academic policies as students attending Eastern Washington
University.
EWU expects the highest standards of academic integrity of its students. Academic honesty is the foundation of a fair
and supportive learning environment for all students. Personal responsibility for academic performance is essential
for equitable assessment of student accomplishments. The university supports the faculty in setting and maintaining
standards of academic integrity. Charges of violations of academic integrity are reviewed through a process that
allows for student learning and impartial review.
IMPACT ON FINANCIAL AID AND SCHOLARSHIPS
20
Students’ participation in the Running Start program and other concurrent enrollment programs does not affect a
student’s financial aid or scholarship eligibility as long as they apply to colleges as a freshman and not a transfer
students and check “never attended” on a the FASFA application.
See Appendix B for a graphic outlining the impact on financial aid.
