It’s fun to feed hummingbirds andsee them up close — almost likeencountering fairies. But shouldwe be getting so personal? And ifso, how is it possible for a gianthuman to attract a buzzingbee-bird weighing about as muchas a nickel?

Es divertido alimentar a loscolibríes y verlos de cerca, es

casi como ver hadas. ¿Pero noestaríamos excediéndonos? Y si

We asked Sheri Williamson, anaturalist, ornithologist andauthor of “A Field Guide toHummingbirds of North America.”Here’s what she said.

“It’s sort of a meditative exercise wecould all use to slow down a bit,”said Ms. Williamson. “Sitting stillyou start to notice things in yourgarden you may not have noticedbefore. It makes for a nice excuse toget out and just commune withnature.”

To discourage the birds fromthinking of any human as apossible food source, she said,try blending in with theenvironment as much aspossible. That’s importantbecause not every human hasgood intentions, she notes.

Getting hummingbirds tooaccustomed to people can makethem vulnerable to those whomay swat at them out of fear orattract them for reasons otherthan just observation.

“There are reports of peopleattracting hummingbirds and doingterrible things to them,” she said,like selling them as love charms.

Hummingbirds can recall whenthey visited flowers at specificlocations in their territories andkeep track of whether they’re fullof nectar or depleted. Somehummingbirds can learn aboutcolors. And migratinghummingbirds travel longdistances, returning yearly to thesame locations.

Los colibríes pueden recordar loslugares en sus territorios, donde

visitaron flores y hacer unseguimiento de si tienen néctar o

These intelligent birds have hugebrains relative to their bodies,and they show awareness oftheir surroundings. But nobody,to Ms. Williamson’s knowledge,has formally tested whetherhummingbirds recognize humansas food sources.

Estas aves tienen cerebrosenormes en relación a sus

cuerpos, y muestran concienciade su entorno. Pero nadie, según

la Sra. Williamson, ha probadoformalmente si los colibríes

Anecdotal accounts suggest,however, that hummingbirds maylook for humans when they findtheir feeders empty.

“They’ll fly to the feeder, look atme, and fly back to the feeder,almost like a pet waiting at an emptyfood dish,” she said.

“A really gaudy Hawaiian printshirt is an excellent hummingbirdattractor,” said Ms. Williamson.She also called Mr. Pratt’sflowered hat, “a great idea.”

In the tropics, Ms. Williamsonsaid, nonmigratory hummingbirdsseem to be doing a poorer job atpollination of some flowers nearyear-round feeding stations.

“This doesn’t seem to be as much ofa problem here in the temperatezone — as long as we practice goodfeeding habits,” she said.

Regularly clean feeders — theones you wear or the oneshanging in your garden — everyfew days or more often in hotweather with hydrogen peroxideto keep the nectar fromfermenting and to fend offmicrobes that may makehummingbirds sick.

Your best chance to hand-feedhummingbirds is when they’reunder stress, which includes thistime of year, when some birdsare preparing to migrate andunsure of where they’ll find theirnext batch of flowers or feeders.Don’t worry — it’s unlikely thatthey’d resist their internal clocksto stick around for your feeder,Ms. Williamson said, (thoughsome nonmigratory species haveexpanded their ranges becauseof friendly human feeders).
