Note from Business operations: Sue Pankowski

Welcome to the Summer of 2017! It is the final quarter of fiscal year. The RHIC run has ended, as has NSRL run 17B and isotope production atthe BLIP. As we turn our attention towards machine maintenance and upgrade efforts, we must also return our focus towards doing so in afiscally prudent manner. With budgetary uncertainty looming as we move towards the end of the year, and never ending pressures to do morewith less, you may be asking yourself “what can I do to help control costs?” Here are some guidelines that all staff should adhere to.

Charge your time and materials to the appropriate programs. Don’t always assume that your default program should be charged for yourwork. Ask your supervisor to provide an appropriate project/activity number. Where multiple programs benefit, be sure to share the cost inproportion to the benefit.

Limit spending to critical work scope. Ensure that the items you are buying are absolutely necessary for your program, whether you arebuying items via a WebReq, credit card, eBuy, or any other means. And don’t forget to get all approvals. Remember to make every purchasecount!

Overtime should be limited to priority efforts that are management approved.

Review your month end reports for credit card transactions, stores withdrawals, and labor charges.

Take your vacation time! Don’t forget to take time to recharge. Charging “V” on your timecard doesn’t cost our projects anything since programs are charged for yourvacation time in advance (when the time is earned).

Keep safe, and enjoy your summer.

Note from our Accelerator Division: Wolfram Fischer

The RHIC Run-17 ended on Friday, 30 June 2017, when the warm-up of the magnets began. All three parts of the physics program weresuccessfully completed: the main program with polarized proton collisions at 255 GeV, a gold-gold run at 27.2 GeV/nucleon, and a short specialrun with polarized protons at 255 GeV for the RHICf experiment. RHICf had installed a dedicated detector on one side of STAR. Congratulationsagain to Vahid Ranjbar, who coordinated to polarized proton operation, and Greg Marr, who coordinated the gold-gold operation. Greg will alsobe the Run Coordinator for next year’s ion operation, when we plan to collide zirconium-96 with zirconium-96, ruthenium-96 with ruthenium-96,and also gold with gold at an energy just above the injection energy. In parallel to the RHIC Run-17, the CeC PoP experiment proceeded and theLEReC DC gun was commissioned.

The last week of the Run was dedicated to a number of APEX studies, and a systematic test of a sample of the quench protection diodes. One ofthe best APEX experiments this year was the demonstration of spin flipping at both injection and at store energy. This is a difficult experiment andseveral people have worked on it for some time. Congratulations to Haxin Huang, Peter Oddo and the whole team.

The RHIC Retreat this year will take place on 8-9 August 2017. The analysis of the Run-17, preparation of Run-18 and the Beam Energy Scan IIin Run-19/20, and further upgrades to the machine and experimental protection systems will be the focus.

Note from our Experimental Support & Facilities Division: Bill Christie

The twenty-one Cryo week RHIC Run 17 ended on July 3rd. This was another ambitious run, with many challenging goals both on thecollider side and the experimental side, but all rose to the challenge and we had another very successful run.

On the collider side the challenges included providing transversely polarized proton proton collisions at top energy (root(s) = 510 GeV) withdynamic beta* luminosity leveling for the primary STAR physics goal, 54 GeV Au on Au collisions for the secondary STAR physics goal, aswell as radially polarized 510 GeV pp collisions for the RHICf program which ran in conjunction with STAR. Other major collider efforts inrun 17 were the initial commissioning of portions of the LeReC system, as well as the running of the CeC proof of principle (PoP)experiment.

STAR met or exceeded just about every one of its data set goals for run 17. Those who may be interested in the STAR details for the run canlook at the STAR summary presented at the Annual RHIC/AGS users mtg, via the following link:https://www.bnl.gov/aum2017/content/plenary/pdf/jinlong_zhang.pdf

The Operations schedule for RHIC Run 18 is just in the final iterations, and will be posted on the web soon. The budget for next year will notbe known for some time, but what the schedule will show is that we're planning for a fifteen Cryo week run. The beams we expect to run areZirconium on Zirconium, Ruthenium on Ruthenium, as well as gold on gold. Run 18 will be the final year of running for the CeC PoP

experiment, as well as a year that will have significant efforts on the commissioning of the LeReC system, in preparation for run 19.

Note from Operations: Paul Sampson

With another successful and productive run completed, CAD Shutdown 17 has begun. Following alternating machine studies anddiagnosis of quench protection diodes in RHIC, the shutdown began on June 30th. At that time all of the accelerators were turned offwith the exception of LINAC, which ran with beam until July 3rd for BLIP and followed up with RF development. All other areas in thecomplex were surveyed and opened to Restricted Access by July 1st. Shutdown work has begun.

After some setup early this month, LEReC will return to commissioning and studies during the evenings. This effort is scheduled to re-start on July 10th and end on August 10th. Access to the 2 o’clock sector of RHIC will be prohibited during the evenings during thisperiod.

Schedules for major works, testing, interruptions and other items continue to be developed and can be viewed on the “RHIC Broadcast”page.

To view a list of approved work for the Shutdown or to review past results, go to the Job Request System and select the appropriate date. This link is behind the firewalland requires privileges to view.

For weekly schedule updates see: This Week, which can be viewed by all.

Note from our MEDICAL ISOTOPE RESEARCH & PRODUCTION PROGRAM: Cathy Cutler

This week we learned that Dr. Leonard Mausner won a BNL S&T award. We would like to congratulate Leonard on receiving this award andbeing recognized for his work on radioisotope production and improvements to the accelerator isotope production facilities at BNL. Pleasecongratulate Leonard and thank him for all his work at BNL.

This month we say good bye to Leonard as he will be retiring on the 28th of July. A workshop for Dr. Leonard Mausner will be held on the 24th

of July in the Snyder conference room in building 911 from 9-12. Former colleagues of Leonard will be presenting such as Dr. Saed Mirzadehform ORNL that worked as a postdoc with Leonard here at BNL, Dr. Kathy Kolsky that worked alongside Leonard for many years, Dr. NickSimos who has collaborated with Leonard on radiation damage studies and Dr. Suresh Srivastava who worked with Leonard for many years. On the 27th C-AD will be holding a retirement reception for Leonard in the lobby of 911 at 4pm. Please plan to attend and donate $10 for thegift & cocktail hour to Caitlin Hoffman in building 911 B.
