Participating in God’s Story
We love good stories.
The best stories have a way of capturing our imaginations and making us believe, if only for a moment, that we belong in them. Whether it’s a book, movie, or play, we are a people who are drawn into and shaped by stories.
The Bible has an explanation for this. It tells us that God is writing the story of all stories, and we were created to inhabit His drama of redemption.
Since antiquity, the church has rehearsed and participated in God’s story by keeping time differently than the rest of society.
Of course, the church still counts days and hours, but the seasons of its calendar are inspired by the annual feasts and celebrations of God’s people throughout Scripture. The church calendar (also known as the Christian or
liturgical calendar) has helped Christians orient their lives around the Biblical story since its inception.
Through practicing the seasons of Advent, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost, the church participates in the life of Christ and
declares that they belong in God’s story.
As with all good things, there are plenty of examples of misuse and abuse, and the church calendar is no exception. For many, the calendar seems rigid and
ritualistic. For others, it may feel strange or foreign. But one thing to consider is that all of us observe seasons. Personally, I’ve found that when I don’t think
about my time, my default setting is to let cultural holidays, sports seasons and entertainment dictate my rhythms. Inevitably, this pattern leaves me feeling tired and restless in a confusing story. The beauty of the church
calendar is that it teaches me the story of the gospel throughout the year and transforms something as basic as time into a means of God’s revelation.
-
If you get passionate about the colors of your team, the packed stadium, and the highs and lows of the game, then you will love the church calendar! As we dramatize the gospel with common colors, postures, songs, prayers, and disciplines, we are united in time with Christians all over the world–
watching, anticipating, celebrating, longing, lamenting and living together in one common story. Sunday, December 2 is the beginning of the new church year and a chance for us to set up rhythms of prayer and worship that form and shape us in a culture of competing stories. This devotional is a humble
invitation to participate together as a church body in the unfolding narrative of redemption this Advent season.
The Season of Advent
What’s the season of Advent all about? Advent means “coming” and its posture is that of longing, expectation and waiting. During this time, the church looks back to Jesus’ first coming and looks forward to his coming again. This world is broken. We feel the impact of sin and death in almost every aspect of life. In light of this, the cry of Advent is a cry for help from those who have experienced the tyranny of injustice in a world under the
curse of sin. It is also the cry of hope from those who await God’s deliverance. Advent calls us to wait and prepare for Jesus’ coming by
repenting and believing. The dominant color of advent is purple, which stands for royalty, symbolizing the coming of the king. The Scripture
readings that accompany Advent are drawn from Old Testament messianic prophecies and New Testament messianic fulfillment passages. Common disciplines within the church during this season include confessing sin,
lamenting the brokenness in the world, longing for a redeemer, and rehearsing the promises of God.

How To Use This Devotional
This devotional is a resource for you and your family during the season of Advent. It is designed to be practiced with others (spouses, children,
roommates), but it can serve as a personal devotional as well. It might be helpful to pick a time of day to use it, like after a meal or before bed. Each day guides you through a reflection, call to prayer, song, advent reading,
Practicing God’s Presence, prayer, and benediction.
You are welcome to tailor each devotional to your needs. For instance, one day you may decide to spend more time in prayer than you do reading.
If the readings are difficult to understand, you may consider using a more accessible translation like the New Living Translation. When it comes to singing songs together, some of us will find it refreshing, others will feel a little awkward. If you have any musicians in the family this could be a
chance to have them lead you. If you have trouble singing out loud, consider listening to the songs on CPC’s app (Sunday a Advent Playlist). Each day provides flexibility, so feel free to go at your own pace and figure
out what works for you and your family. If you miss a day do not feel guilty or try to make it up, just pick up where you left off. Also, be encouraged that your brothers and sisters at CPC are doing this with you. Let’s enter
into this new church year by rehearsing the gospel story together and asking the Lord to prepare our hearts for the advent of Christ.

appendix
the lord’s prayerOur Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come,
thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread,
and forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil;for thine is the kingdom
and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.
the apostles’ creedI believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father, from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
-
belgic confession(articles 20–21)
What do you believe about the work of God?All: We believe that God—who is perfectly merciful andalso very just—sent his Son to assume the nature in whichthe disobedience had been committed, in order to bear init the punishment of sin by his most bitter passion anddeath.
What do you believe about the work of Jesus Christ? All: We believe that Jesus Christ presented himself in ourname before his Father, to appease his wrath with fullsatisfaction by offering himself on the tree of the cross andpouring out his precious blood for the cleansing of oursins, as the prophets had predicted.
Why did he endure all this? All: He endured all this for the forgiveness of sins.
What comfort does this give you? All: We find all comforts in his wounds and have no needto seek or invent any other means to reconcile ourselveswith God than this one and only sacrifice, once made, which renders believers perfect forever.
