“KUTNİA” PARTICIPATES AT MAISON OBJET TRADE FAIR DEDICATED TO LIFESTYLE, DECORATION AND DESIGN FOR THE FIRST TIME BETWEEN 7-11 SEPTEMBER 2018. “KUTNİA” invites designers, architects, editors and retailers to discover the kutnu fabric wowen on handloom by craftsmen from Gaziantep since 16th century; and kutnu’s adaptation story to today’s modern world. KUTNİA, taking its inspiration from Kutnu that is a traditional fabric of Gaziantep, was established by AJK Textile in order to adapt this national value to today’s modern world. Kutnu, that had been almost forgotten, turned into a new brand, KUTNİA, to reach into the future. Kutnu, as for its encyclopedic definition, is a silky fabric which has colored, floss silk wraps and cotton woofs. It is known as the oldest silken fabric. Colorful wraps and woofs create stripes which is the signature of Kutnu. Kutnu had been used for men and women’s clothes in the Ottoman period, and also for furnishing in large cities like Istanbul. If you trace Kutnu back, you can find its name in trade agreements signed between the Ottoman Empire and the US in the early 19s. However today, only few craftsmen left who knew how to weave Kutnu. In the meanwhile, there were very limited range of products that could be made within kutnu fabric available. Thus, the necessity of introducing kutnu to the contemporary world was born. In line with this necessity, the brand KUTNİA was born. There was an intensive R&D process which took 1.5 years. At the end, the special kutnu fabric of the KUTNİA brand collection, which offers a various range of quality, texture, and thickness, and stays loyal to its early day’s production methods, was developed. Thanks to that, the kutnu become widely available to be used in various areas such as home textile, ready-made clothing, and upholstery. When we were creating the KUTNİA brand, we prioritised people from diverse backgrounds who are curious about different cultures. Therefore, KUTNIA offers accessible luxury with an eclectic lifestyle. When we developed our collection, we took inspiration from the kutnu heritage and Gaziantep where its roots are based. Moreover, we benefited from having Zeugma Mosaics, traditional spices, Orient Express memories, Spice Route and traditional Anatolian women’s handcrafts as part of our culture. Most importantly, our main source of inspiration is derived from our ability to reinterpret tradition with contemporary art.
