PARTICIPANT LEADERSHIP STYLE Definition - (Let us work together to solve this) It is also referred as shared leadership style. Participatory Leadership style is a leadership style in which the leader participates with and involves others in the decision making process. The participative leader is a person who realizes the importance of getting opinion from others. The participatory leadership paradigm is based on respect and engagement. It constructively focuses energy in every human to human encounter. A more advanced, more democratic and more effective model of leadership, it harnesses diversity, builds community and creates shared responsibility for action. It deepens individual and collective learning yielding real development and growth. History of Evaluation Back in 1973, Professor Victor Vroom and Phillip Yetton published, The Normative Model of Leadership Behaviour in which they deeved into the effects of involving subordinates into decision making. Their researches lead to what is known today as the participative leadership style. Characteristics More important characteristics include group facilitation and the ability to teach and learn collaboratively in each situation. Participative leaders follow followers or team members to solve problems and learn together towards developing performance goals and strategies for accomplishing those goals. Participative leaders fuel and harness deep levels of employee motivation by knowing how to share decision making control with their followers knowledge, skills and ability level for making a given decision effectively. Leaders are often described as relinquishing or sharing their formal authority when a followers knowledge exceeds her own in a given situation. It is inappropriate or even dangerous in certain situations such as rescue or battle field situations where fast and highly technical direction of followers is mandatory. When the participative leadership styles help employees to accept changes easily because they play a role in process but this is not a good leadership style for those who are prone to excessive worry.

Usefulness / Application This is usually used when you have part of the information and your employees have other parts.
