PART TWO: MY THRILLER OPENING

By Ajibike Sobogun

Page 2: Part Two: My Thriller Opening

The title of the film has a massive impact of the film and what genre it is. As I am doing a psychological thriller the font and glow make it look very mysterious. Also the title itself “ UnAttached” is very simple and allows the audience to think more about it and it links to the conventions of the thriller genre as it doesn’t give to much of the film away.

THE TITLE OF THE FILM

In this shot the audience can see the setting which is in a house. The audience can see the sofa , lamp and picture frame. The location is very subtle as the house looks very normal but then the thriller conventions show that it is occasionally the place that the audience would least expect to be the act of all of the suspicious activity.

SETTING/LOCATION

COSTUME AND PROPSThe main prop in this opening is the telescope. This is the link between my main character and the person they feel “unattached” from. The is the main piece of costume as this is when the person feels most relaxed. Although the pictures are the important prop as it is proof of the character and there odd attractions. It also shows nostalgia as they keep it documented and make a hobby of it.

CAMERAWORK AND EDITING

The camerawork in this opening is very precise. As the shots vary from close ups and over the shoulder it shows an ironic state as it is as if the audience is watching the main character as the main character is watching someone else. This fits the conventions of a thriller opening as I have edited it to look like the audience takes part in the activities played out by the main character.

TITLE FONT AND STYLEThe font of the title shows mistakes as it looks cracked and broken. It also has a glow around it so it looks of importance in the shot. The way it enters is very different as it is in a mercury state. This fits the thriller conventions as it is not bold and simple it is extremely difficult and odd. Although most thriller films have titles flashing in I feel it makes it hard to read and even through that is the point I want my audience to be able to see all of the people involved.

STORY AND HOW IT’S SETS UP

In these pictures the audience can see that the character in the photos is not aware that pictures are being taken of them. This shows a sense of mystery as to why would someone want to take picture of them . This meets one of the conventions as there is normally an unhealthy obsession with someone or something in a thriller film. In this one it is the boy in the pictures.

GENRE AND HOW IT IS SUGGESTED

In this over the shoulder shot the audience can see the character looking at pictures on the wall. As these pictures show up in throughout the opening it shows the clarity and obsession of how important these picture are. This meet the psychological thriller conventions as they make the audience think outside the box. In terms of my opening it suggests how obsessions run peoples lives.

HOW CHARACTERS ARE INTRODUCED

The first thing the audience can see in the film is feet walking across the floor. They also see a piece of tape on the characters leg, this shows the insecurities about how they look and feel about the body. They are also wearing big boots around a clean floor it could be seen as contrast as that the character doesn’t fit into the set scene. In thriller other openings the character is introduced with a close up. In some way I have challenged this.

SPECIAL EFFECTSThis is one of the many effects I used in the in my opening. The effect I used was a cross dissolve where the resent scene would dissolve into the next. I also edited with very shot cuts so the audience doesn’t loose interest in the opening. The special effects are a key part in a thriller opening as with normal filming with no cuts and edits then it would be boring and the audience would loose interest. This meets the thriller conventions on keeping the audience interested with special effects and editing techniques.
