Part 5 – Miracle on the Sea

Lk. 8:22-25

Lk. 8:22 Now it happened, on a certain day, that He got into a boat with His disciples. And He said to them, "Let us cross over to the other side of the lake." And they launched out.

23 But as they sailed He fell asleep. And a windstorm came down on the lake, and they were filling with water, and were in jeopardy.

24 And they came to Him and awoke Him, saying, "Master, Master, we are perishing!" Then He arose and rebuked the wind and the raging of the water. And they ceased, and there was a calm.

25 But He said to them, "Where is your faith?" And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, "Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!"

A Storm Troubles

Persecution, worldliness, false doctrine

Storm is inevitable

2 Tim. 3:12 “Yes, and all that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution”

2 Tim. 2:3 “You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.”

v. 23

“Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.” Jas.1:12

“That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perishes” 1 Pet.1:7

Distress Fear

Panic - about to die !!!

Fear can be predictive – Job. 3:25

Fear often paralyzes a personOne talent man - Matt. 25:14-30Rich young ruler - Matt. 19:16-22

Bad habits - fear of not being accepted

Mk. 4:38

Fear keeps some from obeying gospel- Ridicule – Matt. 5:11- Family turn against- Cannot be faithful

Antidote is Faith- “where is your faith?” Matt. 8:26; Mk. 4:40;

Lk. 8:25- “And this is the victory that overcomes the world, even our faith” 1 Jn.5:4

Distress FearMk. 4:38

Voice Compassion

Ps. 46:1 “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble”

Heb. 4:16 “find grace to help in time of need.”

We need not fear when Jesus is with us !

A Calm Peace

“peace be still” – v. 24

“peace that surpasses all understanding” – Phil. 4:7

Disciples should have had faith- When Jesus says something is going to happen, it does.- Jesus was with them

Peter – Acts 12

We should put perfect trust in Jesus- Obey the gospel - Heb. 5:9- Faithful in worship - Heb. 10:25- Life of sacrifice - Rom. 12:1-2

- Trust in Jesus will support us in death

Ps. 23:4 “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me.”

Do We Believe ?- Promised eternal life- Promised eternal torment- Promised to answer prayer- Tells us that He loves us

And they were afraid, and marveled, saying to one another, "Who can this be? For He commands even the winds and water, and they obey Him!“ Lk. 8:25
