learning disabilities that match the functional limitation 3. Identify the specific areas on center that a student may need

specific accommodations relevant to known functional limitations

4. Adapt or adjust accommodation as necessary to appropriately implement it in the various areas of the center or know who to contact if assistance is needed

Why Do You Need to Know About Learning Disabilities (LD)?

It is a high incidence type disability and there are a variety of types of Learning Disabilities To appropriately serve and support students with LD, staff

must have a basic understanding of LD in order to: Identify and implement strategies Identify and implement appropriate accommodations Evaluate effectiveness of supports and accommodations provided

What is a Learning Disability?

A LD is a neurobiological condition that affects the way individuals of average to above average intelligence Receive information Process information Express information

LD can impact the ability to acquire basic skills of listening, speaking, thinking, reading, spelling, writing, and/or mathematics

What do we mean when we ask for accommodations to be considered center wide? Academics Testing Career Technical Residential Cafeteria Work-based learning Navigating around center Recreational facilities Health services(this list is not all inclusive)

Your Responsibilities

Learn the basic characteristics of a variety of types of disorders.

Ensure that accommodations under your responsibility are implemented and effective How do I know which accommodations I am responsible for

implementing?

Notification

Bi-weekly emails - DCs should email staff at least bi-weekly a list of students with accommodation plans in CIS that specifically indicate any plans that are new or updated Copies of these emails will be stored and maintained by a DC Managers are responsible for ensuring that approved

accommodations are implemented in their areas of supervision

Cleaning the Toilet

1. Go to the storage supply cabinet and get cleaning supplies

2. Spray cleaner under rim of toilet bowl and let sit for 5 minutes

3. Use scrub brush and scrub inside of toilet bowl4. Flush toilet and make sure bowl is clean5. Use disinfecting wipe and wipe down outside of toilet

Dysgraphia is a learning disability that affects writing and can include visual-spatial difficulties (e.g., trouble processing what the eye sees) and language processing difficulties (e.g., trouble processing and making sense of what the ear hears)
