Welcome to a new Spring Programme

The start of the year ushers in an exciting period of transformation for Brighton Dome. While our Concert Hall will be open as usual, preparations to restore and transform the historic Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre are now gathering pace.

As we move closer to realising our plans, well be working hard to ensure that your visit over the coming months is as enjoyable as ever, but do keep an eye on our website for up-to-date details.

Meanwhile, we will be using our spaces imaginatively to ensure that we continue to bring you a varied and eclectic programme. Alongside our numerous Concert Hall offerings, which this season features art-rockers Warpaint, London Contemporary Orchestras live orchestral score accompanying the film There will be Blood and an electrifying new show from Cubas flagship contemporary dance troupe Danza Contempornea de Cuba, we are presenting a selection of theatre performances in intimate new settings. These include Edinburgh Festival 2016 hits Eurohouse and The Duke from Shon Dale-Jones, the multi-award winning writer/performer behind Hugh Hughes. We also continue to partner with the Attenborough Centre for the Creative Arts for our Coffee Concert chamber music series.

Our annual event marking International Womens Day features stand-up from Bridget Christie, a live recording of the cult-hit Guilty Feminist Podcast, a lecture and discussion on ecofeminism with Germaine Greer and our free day of celebrations in partnership with Brighton Womens Centre and Brighton Museum.

Germaine Greer Women for Life on Earth: The Inevitability of Ecofeminism

When Welsh women turned up at the RAF base at Greenham Common in 1981, they were carrying a banner that read Women for Life on Earth. Theirs was direct action, born of gut reaction, virtually innocent of theoretical framework.

Feminists can be found wherever the planet and our fellow earthlings are in trouble. They shepherd stranded cetaceans back into deeper water, stand in front of lorries carrying live animals to slaughter, march and lobby against the threat of fracking. The action they cannot be moved to take on their own behalf, they take on behalf of the planet. If the planet is to survive and human beings continue to inhabit it, this female energy must be unleashed.

Australian-born writer, and major voice of the second-wave feminist movement, Germaine Greer, discusses ecofeminism in this special event for International Womens Day. Her ideas have created controversy ever since her first book, The Female Eunuch (1970) became an international best-seller, making her a household name.

Bridget Christie Because You Demanded It The most electrifying comedy Ive yet seen on the Fringe The Guardian

The people of the UK have voted to leave the EU, even though no-one had a plan for what would happen if it did. If you didnt want to leave the EU, or you did, but now dont, because you havent got any of the things you were promised, then this is absolutely the show for you. If you did want to leave the EU, and still do, then you will still find it funny, but for different reasons, as you witness the liberal female comedians exasperated and despairing meltdown.

Whatever your political views, this show is one youd be foolish to miss Telegraph

With 116 turbines off the Sussex coast, the Rampion Offshore Wind Farm will generate enough electricity to supply the equivalent of around 330,000 homes, or more than 4 in 10 of all the homes in Sussex.

Stay up to date with the project at rampionoffshore.com

The construction phase is progressing well with all 116 foundation installed and the turbines due for installation in 2017. As a long-term neighbour of the Sussex community, Rampions support for the Brighton Dome & Brighton Festival music programme aims to raise awareness of this exciting project.

    Mexrrissey Mexico Goes Morrissey

Nothing the world holds could match the love waiting for me in Mexico City Morrissey

In Mexico, Morrissey has always been more than just a musician. His songs have chimed with a huge audience raised on rancheras and mariachis. Now a band made in Mexico City has reinvented the songs of Morrissey and The Smiths: a brass and string led combo from the smallest village with the biggest bleeding heart.

  • 15

Mexrrissey have toured the UK to sold-out crowds and released their first album, No Manchester (a Mexican slang phrase inspired by The Smiths, meaning Are You Kidding Me?), to critical acclaim.

Come and see what happens when songs born on the streets of Manchester change

their haircut and go to live in Mexico under an assumed name.

    Warpaint Plus special guests

Art-rockers Warpaint have returned from a year-long hiatus with their third studio album, Heads Up. The new set of tracks takes the bands influences, ranging from Dr Dre to David Bowie, and filters them through their experiences of performing live to make for some unforgettably kinetic and energetic music, which is even better witnessed in person.

Dvok Symphonic Variations Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No. 1 Elgar Enigma Variations Rory Macdonald conductor Igor Tchetuev piano

In the right hands, one tune can unlock a universe. Dvok took a half-forgotten song and turned it into an orchestral work of magical warmth and colour. Tchaikovsky used one of his very greatest melodies to throw down an epic challenge to a virtuoso pianist: the brilliant Igor Tchetuev picks up the gauntlet this evening. And Elgar well, he never told anyone the secret of his Enigma. Instead, he created a musical portrait-gallery thats become part of our national life.

Hugh Hughes Presents Shn Dale-Jones in

The Duke Produced by Hoipolloi The Scotsmans Fringe First Award Winner, Edinburgh 2016

In the autumn of 2015 I sit at my desk waiting for an email that will tell me what I need to do to the script to get it onto the screen. I turn the radio on. I listen to a report about the refugee crisis. My mother calls. She tells me shes broken The Duke. My mother, my film script and the refugee crisis all need my attention...

Shn Dale-Jones, the multi-award winning writer/performer behind Hugh Hughes performs the Fringe First award winner, The Duke.

Funny and poignant, the one-man show weaves together the tragi-comic fate of a family heirloom - a porcelain figure of The Duke of Wellington, the quandary of a scriptwriter stretching his integrity and an unfolding disaster as thousands of children flee their homes. Blending fantasy and reality, this playful show gently challenges our priorities in a world full of crisis.

The Duke only mentions refugees three times in the entire hour, and yet does so in a way that draws the crisis closer to home, making it more personal and difficult to ignore Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

    Sussex Salon Does Prison Work?

The current programme of prison reform is underway ushering in an era of building new and improved mega prisons to house a prison population that has doubled since the 90s. Michael Howard famously cried in 1993 that Prison Works, a philosophy that apparently still remains prevalent. But with perpetually high rates of re-offending and increasing costs has the time come to ask more radical questions around the appropriateness of imprisonment in the 20th Century. Is it time to ask whether we should have prisons at all?

    Building For Our Future

You may have heard that were on the threshold of a major redevelopment.

Brighton Dome Concert Hall will remain open for business while our nationally-important Corn Exchange and Studio Theatre begin their transformation in the New Year.

Major improvements to the Studio Theatre will include balcony seating, a new artists creation and development space, and a cafe opening out onto New Road.

This work will be the first phrase of an a over-arching culture and heritage-led development plan for the Royal Pavilion Estate, the cultural heart of the city, which is being developed in partnership with Brighton & Hove City Council and the Royal Pavilion and Museums.
