Multiple award-winning conversion of the former 1888 Carriage Workshops building at Eveleigh

Tonkin Zulaikha Greer’s adaptive reuse of the building as the CarriageWorks Contemporary Arts Centre has embraced the building’s past whilst providing it with a bold new future.

The centre includes three flexible theatre spaces, rehearsal rooms, administrative offices, workshop space and amenities.

• Protect and celebrate our unique landscapes, features and history - the Waipapa Stream valley has been used and abused for too long and the Domain disconnected from Parnell.

• NZILA award-winning Boffa Miskell plan exists for daylighting the Waipapa Stream and landscaping the valley (ARC - initiated).

• Suggest minimal or no provision for car parking to accentuate public transport and walk/ride focus

More Positives

• ARTA originally proposed a train station at Carlaw Park. New options include a station midway between Mainline Steam & original site, and another adjacent to Mainline Steam.

• Despite City Development Committee enthusiasm for Cheshire Street site, FPF still shows a Parnell Train Station at the CarlawPark location – but it’s not yet included in the 10 Year Plan. (Report requested by Cr Bhatnagar delayed and expected for November 12 meeting.)

• ARC / Mike Lee 100% behind Waipapa Valley/Cheshire Street location.

• Rodney Hide MP, Cr Ken Baguley and Hobson Community Board briefed and supportive.

Current Status

• Commitment by Kiwi Rail, ARTA, ARC,ACC to Parnell Train Station at Mainline Steam Site, Cheshire Street.

• Commitment to a heritage “destination” masterplanfor the Cheshire Street site in the District Plan.

• District Planning identification of the Parnell Train Station at Cheshire Street NOT Heather Street.
