Scratchboard Art | S130by Jon Taylor, International Society of Scratchboard ArtistsMost people are familiar with scratchboard from elementary school, covering a piece of poster board with crayon and a layer of ink, then scratching off the ink to reveal the color beneath. The modern scratchbord by Ampersand has given new life to the medium as a fine art method. Scratchboard is a subtractive method. Rather than the traditional method of adding to a white sheet of paper, building up dark values, we work in reverse by removing material to create the light areas. In class we will review the elements of value and texture, selection and manipulation of reference material, transferring your image to the board and the chance to try tools and techniques in creating your own scratch art. A $12 supply fee gets you an 8”x10” scratchboard and traditional scratch tool.
