A Message from Administrative Team

We hope everyone has had a wonderful start to the new school

year. It’s hard to believe we are already well into the second month of the 2018-19 school year! Our students have had

multiple opportunities to get to know their classmates by participating in teambuilding activities their teachers have intentionally planned. The staff at Parkview are committed to

building safe and inclusive classroom communities.

This year at Parkview Public School, we will continue to support student achievement and well-being. We will work with our students in developing a growth mindset approach and help

them view mistakes as opportunities to learn. We will continue to use the Zones of Regulation Framework to help our students

recognize the different zones they are in and learn how to use strategies to stay or change the zone they are in. This framework helps address self regulation and provides students

with an increased understanding of emotions and allows them to develop stronger problem solving skills.

At our first School Council meeting we held our elections, and

we would like to congratulate our 2018-19 executive council members: Chair- Anoosh Sharif, Vice Chair-Flora Ho, Secretary- Bin Liu, Treasurer- Henna Alvi. We welcome all

parents and guardians to participate and attend our meetings.

It was wonderful to see all our Parkview families at our annual Meet and Greet evening. Progress reports will be going home on November 21st, 2018. You will have an opportunity to meet

with your child’s teachers on November 22nd and November 23rd, 2018.

Thank you for your ongoing support of the school! We look forward to another great year together!

A Message from School Council

Dear Parkview Families,

On behalf of the Parkview School Council we would like to welcome new and returning families to the 2018 -19 school year. Our council is made up from parent volunteers and our aim is to

continue to encourage and promote strong partnerships within the school, the parent body and the community at large. The success of our school council is only as strong as the volunteers associated with it, and we would love for you to share your time by volunteering within our various

council committees.

We have many school events planned throughout the year including pizza lunch days, movie nights for our students, various ECO initiatives, and our annual school BBQ. Our school snack program has started and students are welcome to help themselves to healthy snacks which are available

in the office. This year we will be sending home a letter asking for donations towards our school playground. Any donation would be greatly appreciated and this will directly support the well-

being and health of all our students and community. We would also like to thank everyone who voted to help raise funds for our playground. Although, we did not receive the 100-thousand-dollar

prize, it was a good learning process for us.

Please come join us for our first council event on Thursday, November 15 at Chapters

Markham (3175 Highway 7 near Woodbine Avenue) anytime between 6-9 PM. It will be a wonderful way for members of our community to meet each other, learn more about council and

support the love of reading amongst our children. 20 % of all purchases (with a few exclusions) will go back to Parkview P.S. for learning materials.

Our next council meeting will take place on November 5th, 2018 from 7-8:30pm in the library. Please feel free to join us, all are welcome!

Best, Your Parkview School Council Chairs

Anoosh Sharif and Flora Ho

Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration

event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in 2013. It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an

opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually. Sept. 30, was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to

residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year. Parkview recognized Orange Shirt Day on September

28, 2018. Every classroom participated in our school wide challenge which was to answer the following question What can you can do to help others feel like they matter?

In 2007, the Government of Canada declared the month of October as Canadian Islamic History Month. The province of Ontario passed the Islamic Heritage Month Act (2016) to recognize and

affirm the important contributions that Muslims make in Ontario. At Parkview, we recognized the many contributions made by Muslim Canadians over our morning announcements.

Colour House Run

Terry Fox Run

Once again Parkview Public School hosted its 14th annual Terry Fox Walk/Run on Friday, October

5, 2018. Parkview Panthers honoured a true Canadian Hero and learned about his legacy at school. Leading up to our annual Terry Fox run we had daily trivia questions about Terry Fox and the assembly committee organized an assembly for all classes where we learned more about the

Marathon of Hope. To date we have collected $2,700 and are hoping to reach our goal of $4000. Terry Fox remains a symbol of hope, empowerment and inclusion for the Parkview Community.

Students learned that everyone can make a positive difference in this world. Online donations can still be made to support this worthwhile cause. Thank you to our Parkview Community for all their support in continuing to ensure that Terry Fox’s dream towards finding a cure for cancer continues.

Cross Country

OVERALL, PANTHERS PROWL PROUDLY AT AREA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Parkview cross country team showed their team depth and dominance at the area cross

country meet last month by winning the overall junior and overall intermediate pennants for

Parkview.

Although our Intermediate boys team earned a pennant – congratulations to the grade 7 boys,

the strong performances of the other Parkview teams earned enough points to win the overall

championships. Parkview sent 9 out of 10 teams to the regional championships on October 16th at

the ROC – an incredible feat! The Atom boys finished fifth, third place finishes went to tyke boys

and atom girls. Second place finishes went to tyke girls, junior girls, junior boys, intermediate

girls, senior girls and senior boys. Parkview edged out Sir Wilfrid Laurier 49-46 for the overall

junior pennant and the Intermediates defeated Randall 37-35 to claim the overall Intermediate

pennant for Parkview!

All Parkview runners should be proud of their accomplishments as we were the ONLY school in our

entire area of 24 schools to field full teams at each age group. In total, there were 1187 runners

competing at the area championships.

Congratulations to Emma Y for coming first in the tyke girls race. Also placing in the top fifteen

for their races and advancing to the regionals on October 16th at the ROC: Lyla, Monico, Julia,

Kate, Ella (tyke girls); Ethan and Philip (tyke boys); Madeline and Hannah (atom girls); Lucas

(atom boys); Olivia and Kristin (junior girls); Cameron and Nick (junior boys); Emily, Justine, and

Nia (intermediate girls); Joshua, Jake, Ryan, Connor, and Cameron (intermediate boys); Nyema,

Grace and Natalie (senior girls); and Jake, Ben, and Ian (senior boys).

A special thanks to Mr. H’s grade 8 helpers (Cachy, Miracle, Steven and Eric) for their help in

scoring the entire meet and for cleaning up garbage afterwards.

A big thank you to Coach McCammon and Coach Yeung for all their hard work and commitment

to the team. Thanks to the teachers back at Parkview for their flexibility and support. A special

thank you to Ms. Anand and Ms. Osman for their ongoing support of the athletic teams at Parkview.

Finally, a special thanks to Mr. Hewson and former Parkview parents, the Fishers, who continue

to be the stars of the cross country meet because of their commitment to organizing and running

the day. They are amazing people and they continue to make Parkview proud!

Difference Makers Ministers

This year, we are Parkview’s Difference Makers ministers. Difference Makers, formerly known as

Culture of Compassion, is a group that strives to make a positive impact locally and globally, and we want to start here at Parkview. One of the initiatives that we are organizing is the “We Scare

Hunger” food drive. “We Scare Hunger” is a drive where we collect non-perishable food items such as canned foods, pasta, cereal, condiments, and more. We donate all of the food to food

This year the AV Ministers are Ben and Celina. The AV cabinet is responsible for taking pictures,

filming and editing videos. Each Spirit Day, you’ll see us going around with our cameras so remember to smile when you see us. The photos and videos we take for each special event at

Parkview will be displayed on the monitor in the front foyer and the intermediate yearbook. We express our passion through taking photos and helping out the school. So next time you see us capturing moments around the school, help out, pose for a picture, and smile!

Sales Ministers

Hi, we’re Breanna and Jiajia and we are your 2018-2019 sales ministers. This year, there is a new system for treat sales and Mr. Sub. We are allowing parents to pre-order the treats and subs on

school cash online. All treats are $1.50. There will be a total of 3 rounds each lasting for 12 weeks. Round one has already started. The profit we make will benefit the school in several different

ways. The Mr. Sub profit will go directly towards the Gr.8’s graduation. All of the funds raised from treat sales will be used to purchase resources and materials for our school. We are very excited to be your sales ministers this year. We promise to do our best, and make sure everything runs

smoothly.

Sincerely,

Breanna and Jiajia

Eco Ministers

This year, we are your new eco ministers, Cachy and Jaden! We are here to bring ideas to make Parkview eco-friendlier. Here are our ideas for this school year so far:

Checking garbage, recycling, and green bins for each class Updating bin sorting posters to be more suitable for our school Lights out lunch (LOL) to save energy Monthly eco presentations to each individual classroom

We’re excited to be your Eco ministers! Sincerely, Cachy and Jaden

Social Ministers

We are the cabinet that looks after many fun things at Parkview Public School. Our cabinet looks after delivering students hot lunches (Pasta Tuesdays and Pizza Thursdays). Another part of our

job is organizing and tallying points for Parkview’s monthly Spirit Days. Each student at Parkview is in a colour house (Black, White, Grey, or Red). Towards the end of each month, we have one

Spirit Day for students and staff to participate in and support their colour house. Each student was recently given a bracelet by Ms. Anand and Ms. Osman according to their colour house. This bracelet can be worn on any Spirit Day and counts towards points for your colour house. The

Spirit Day for October is Halloween, or Orange and Black day. Parkview students may choose to wear their wacky, scary, or cute Halloween costumes to school (please remember no replica

weapons, no masks, clothing that is representative or another person’s culture or clothing that goes against the school dress code). Students can also show spirit by wearing orange or black, or by wearing their new colour house bracelets. In October we will also host our annual

Intermediate Halloween dance in the gym. Students who choose not to go to the dance will engage in other physical activities. Social cabinet and Arts cabinet will also be coordinating a pumpkin

decorating contest. Pumpkins have been donated by Village Grocer. Each homeroom class will get a pumpkin to decorate. Pumpkins must be in the foyer, ready for judging by 3:00 pm on October 30th. Parkview community members will have an opportunity to bid on a pumpkin to take

home!

Until next time, Your social cabinet ministers, Holly and Megan

Arts Ministers

Hi, It’s your Arts Cabinet Ministers, Kimiya and Mikayla. We love being a part of Arts Cabinet. It’s a lot of fun making Parkview Colourful! With the help of Ms. Nakada, we make banners for school events like the Terry Fox Run, Parent Meet and Greet Night with many more to come. We also make posters and banners for other cabinets like Difference Makers, Social Cabinet and Sales Cabinet as well as decorating the Spirit Day boards.

Sincerely, Kimiya and Mikayla

Settlement and Education Parntership – Parkview Public School

Settlement and Education Partnership in York Region (SEPYR)

Parkview is pleased to welcome back Ms. Julie Zhang, our School Settlement Worker

New to Canada? Do you have a child enrolled in a York Region Public school? We’re here to help you. Funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada, SEPYR provides settlement

services in many languages for newcomer students and their families in their local schools. Through this program, we are pleased to offer newcomer families support in the following

areas: education, employment, language training, housing, health, family related issues, youth issues, finances, library/recreation and more. We have a settlement worker who

can speak Mandarin, at Parkview Public School on Monday mornings to support you. You can contact our School Settlement Worker: Ms. Julie Zhang at: Cell Phone: 416.567.4026,

Walking or Cycling To School

As we start the 2018-2019 school year, we would like to remind and encourage families to consider

walking or cycling with children to and from school. There are many benefits to walking and cycling to school. It:

Improves student academic performance by making children more alert and better prepared

to learn.

Contributes to the daily goal of 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous activity for children,

improving their health and overall fitness.

Reduces traffic congestion and improves safety for everyone in school zones.

Promotes life-long habits that foster independence and active lifestyles, preparing children

for their future.

Page 9: PARKVIEW PULSE - YRDSB...Parkview. Although our Intermediate boys team earned a pennant – congratulations to the grade 7 boys, the strong performances of the other Parkview teams

For those who can’t walk or cycle to school every day, choosing active travel once, twice or a few days a week can still provide benefits. You can also consider parking a block away from the school

and walking the rest of the way. Include active travel as part of your daily routine!

Halloween

Each year, many of our students celebrate the tradition of Halloween. Students celebrating this

occasion in costume at our school must comply with the Safe School’s policy. Costume accessories including, but not limited to, toy guns, knives, axes, swords, etc. are not in compliance with York Region District School Board’s Safe Schools Policy. Please DO NOT send

these accessories to school with your child. Please note that this policy applies to all students at all levels, including Kindergarten. Our Social Cabinet has also organized a Spirit

Day for October 31st, students are encouraged to wear orange or black or a costume or their colour house bracelets. Please do not send masks or any food to school, this will ensure student safety. Thank you for your understanding. We look forward to having a safe and

enjoyable Halloween!

Halloween Safety

Here are some helpful tips from York Regional Police and Health Canada to keep in mind as your children head out to trick or treat:

· Parents should know the route that older children are going to take

· Tell your children to stay in a group, walk slowly and communicate where they are going

· Wear reflective clothing or reflective stripes on dark costumes

· Don’t wear masks that can restrict vision. Face make up is a better choice

· Carry a cell phone in the event of an emergency

· Children should remain on well-lit streets and always use sidewalks

· Remind kids to never enter a stranger’s home or car for a treat

· Throw out any treats that are not wrapped, those in torn or loose packages, or any that have small holes in the wrappers

· Discard homemade candy or baked goods
