You see, I sent you a reply, but when I wrote you back to your email address on YAHOO, I left out the dot before the “com”. I wrote to you at “yahoocom” instead of at “yahoo.com.” You still should have received the email, because after all, it is only one little dot missing. I mean, come on, one little dot is so insignificant, it is not as if I wrote the wrong name! Why would something so trivial prevent you from receiving my email? Isn’t it a bit ridiculous that you did not get my email because of a little dot? No, actually, it is not ridiculous. Because the dot is not just a dot. It represents something. The dot has significance far beyond what I understand. It may seem to me to be trivial, but that is simply because I do not fully understand how the Web works. All I know is that with the dot, my message reaches the correct destination; without it the message is lost. Finding significance in living a Jewish life is a lot like the dots. The details of Jewish practices and customs contain a great deal of meaning and depth. Every detail, if properly understood and practiced, can be relevant to our lives and the lives of others. In other words, every dot counts! If you want to know more about the importance of the dots on the web, study computers. If you want to know more about the importance of Jewish customs and practices, come see me. I would love to help you connect the dots so that they will be more meaningful to you. A S Y N A G O G U E F O R A L I F E T I M E

Every Friday at Park Preschool, the entire schoolgets together for Kabbalat Shabbat, a celebration togreet Shabbat. It’s the one thing that brings ourentire school together on a regular basis and, by farmy favorite 20 minutes of the entire week. Imagine ifyou will, the very first Friday of the school year. Thereare 80 to 90 little children still tentative about comingto school without Mom or Dad. They are just startingto feel comfortable with their teachers and friendsand beginning to understand the routines in theirpreschool classrooms. Out of the blue, the teacherswalk all the children to the front foyer. There they seeall these strange adults (the other teachers) andunfamiliar children and someone called MorahKimmy standing behind a very big piano. Soundsfrightening, don’t you think?

But then I put on my Bim and Bam puppet friendsand quietly begin singing. Soon the older childrenjoin in, remembering the song from last year. Beforethe first verse is over, Bim and Bam have put everyoneat ease and the room fills with song and joy. No oneis scared, and to watch, you would never know thiswas the first week of school.

That’s the feeling that Shabbat instills in us. It’s aspecial time for friends and family to enjoy eachother’s company, sing, dance and be thankful for thetime together. And it’s a special time for us at ParkPreschool. While ‘what happens in the classroom staysin the classroom’, what happens at Shabbat is sharedby all. We have a diversegroup of preschoolers andfamilies and yet, whilespending this special timetogether, we become onebig peaceful and happyfamily. If you’re ever in theneighborhood around 10:15on a Friday morning, pleasestop in and join us forKabbalat Shabbat – we’dlove to see you!!

    January 2010ATAGLANCE

Note from Teri HochbergTeach us so to number our days that we may

attain a wise heart. Psalm 90

This is the time of year when we, as AmericanJews, again say, Happy New Year! While we, ofcourse, count our days by the civil calendar year, intruth, we measure our days by the Jewish calendar. The Jewish calendar, a lunar-solar calendar in whichthe days begin and end at sunset, weaves togethertime as established by nature and also mirrors therhythm of our laws on how to live every day life. Thismonth we look forward to Tu B’Shevat, celebratingthe new year (another new year!) of the trees andreminding us that conserving the earth’s naturalresources is a central Jewish commandment.

Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel once said, “Judaism claims that the way to nobility of the soulis to sanctify time.” As we begin the year 2010, letus resolve to use our time wisely and to share ourtime with those we love. Happy, healthy New Year!
