LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR

Oakland Parks & Recreation (OPR) believes that communities thrive when they play with a purpose. OPR’s purpose is to Expose, Enlighten, Empower and Encourage Edu-cational Excellence through Recreational Experiences. As the summer approaches, we hope you and your family take advantage of the plethora of day camps and programs we offer at all of our recreation facilities. The best way to view the menu of options that we have is to visit our website at: oaklandnet.com/parks.

This year, we have introduced and expanded programs during the summer and throughout the year, including Programs Without Boarder, the Great American Backyard Campout, Sand Box to Empowerment Parent Play Groups, and year-round food services for 98% of our recreation centers. For adults, we have offerings such as Bowling and Flag Football leagues, Sundays in the Redwoods concert series, An Intimate Evening soiree, and all night ceramics at Studio One.

OPR provides play opportunities for everyone. I encourage you to peruse this publica-tion to find an activity of interest, reacquaint yourself with play that you haven’t done in a while, or take a leap and try something new. We have movie nights, swim lessons, com-munity gardens, golf, and fitness memberships available at the East Oakland Sports Center.

If you have a special event approaching, consider one of our lovely rental facilities, such as the Dunsmuir Hellman Historic Estate, the Jack London Aquatic Center or Morcom Rose Garden. We appreciate your support of OPR programs and encourage you to attend the annual Taste of Spring (May 12) and An Intimate Evening (July 30) fundraisers.

Finally, while you are out there playing, take a look at the upgrades we have been able to make at our recreation centers, ball fields and parks by leveraging your tax

dollars and partnering with the private and non-profit sectors. A few of our successes include renovation and expansion of the Golden Gate Recreation Center, the new Dimond Park Tot Lot, and several improved courts and fields across the City.

I’d also like to give special thanks to Audree V. Jones-Taylor, who served as your OPR Director for over 11 years. Prior to her retirement in December 2015, Audree served the Oakland community with an unmatched passion for play

and commitment to public service through recreation programming. In Audree’s words, you are encouraged to…

Come out and play…the OPR way!

Sincerely, Stephanie Hom

OAKLAND PARKS & RECREATION

PRESENTS: here’s a reason we’re called Oakland. Our beautiful city’s green spaces, parks and recreation areas are the heart of our community. These gathering places and the programs they afford are essential to the health, safety and vitality of our city. Growing up in Oakland, our parks were my backyard. The same is still true today for thousands of young people across our city, but they aren’t the only ones who need these vital spaces. Our Parks & Recreation locations and programs are a lifeline for our seniors, a backdrop for cultural events and a center for civic engagement. From swim lessons to camping, sunbathing to capoeira, Oaklanders should be able to take full advantage of all that our Parks & Recreation locations and programs have to offer. Please join me in making sure that every Oaklander has access to these spaces and the rich array of programming they provide. By supporting our Parks & Recreation Department as a volunteer, program user or donor, you can keep Oakland green, healthy and safe.

Greetings from your Parks and Recreation Advisory Commission! Our 11-member Commission advises the Oakland City Council on policies related to our parks and recreational programs. We also review plans for improvements and new facilities in our parks, and approve requests for on-site fundraising and sales at park events. We’re a forum for public comment on important issues such as community gardens, park hours, park safety, and dog play areas.

This is a critical time for Oakland’s parks. The City is welcoming thousands of new residents—and many more are on the way. Our parks have never been busier. This year, the Commission has been advocating for a new park impact fee, to make sure that as Oakland grows, our parks can grow too. An impact fee is an essential way to raise the funds needed to replace aging facilities, restore our recreation centers, and keep Oakland green.

During the last year, your PRAC has held public hearings on important projects, including plans for an exciting new system of waterfront parks at the future Brooklyn Basin development. We also provided guidance on future parks in the Coliseum and Downtown areas. The Commission reviewed applications for more than 40 special events, from the Oakland

Running Festival to the Autumn Lights Lantern Festival. The Commission has also advised the City Council on park rules and regulations, replacement of obsolete park signs, and issues such as park noise and outdoor BBQ grilling. With guidance from PRAC, the City now has designated areas for grilling in Lakeside Park.

PRAC is a diverse group but we share one thing in common, a deep connection to Oakland and recognize that parks are an essential part of what makes our city great.

Please join us at our monthly meetings, held at 4:30 PM on the second Wednesday of each month at the Lakeside Park Garden Center.

OPR stretches three cents on every dollar received from taxpayers through the General Purpose Fund. These funds not only support recreation programming, but also make it possible to upgrade our sports fields, courts, pools, playgrounds, recreation centers and enterprise facilities. OPR has been successful in securing over $6 million dollars in funding over the last two years in grants, sponsorships and donations. In addition, through partnership with Oakland Public Works (OPW) the City has successfully obtained grants from the State of California Proposition 84, Measure WW, Housing Related Parks Program (HRPP), Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Measure DD to complete over 24 Capital improvements at parks throughout Oakland totaling over $14 million collectively. OPR is especially thankful for the support and funding from our corporate and nonprofit partners including Waste Management, the Golden State Warriors, The Good Tidings Foundation, Levi Strauss & Co., National Football League (NFL), Local Initiative Support Corporation (LISC), Oakland Raiders, National Recreation & Parks Association (NRPA) and the East Bay United Soccer Organization.
