Parklands Junior School

values all pupils and aims to develop every child’s potential.

We aim to ensure that everyone is able to

participate fully in school life, to accommodate all members of the

school community.

The school encourages positive attitudes among staff and pupils

to ensure that everyone is treated equally

and can achieve their best.

We aim:

To make the child’s experience of school as positive as possible in order for them to develop self confidence.

To provide a broad based curriculum

which will enable the children to acquire knowledge, understanding and an

appreciation of the world and a positive attitude to learning.

To assist children in demonstrating respect for themselves and others.

To encourage enthusiasm for learning to help the children to develop as

independent thinkers and individuals with a thirst for knowledge.

Aims

We are a four form entry school with 120 pupils in each year group. We are constantly updating and improving our school. Our facilities include a music

and drama room, a small kitchen for pupil cooking activities, an all weather sports pitch and a dedicated room for pastoral care.

We have installed a Trim Trail in the playground and, following the installation of solar panels, we now generate our own electricity.

The school’s ethos is based on caring and aims to create a secure and stimulating environment, where each person can develop the confidence and ability to reach their full potential.

We will seek to safeguard children and young people by:

valuing them, listening to and respecting them; adopting child protection guide-

lines through procedures and a code of conduct for staff and

volunteers; recruiting staff and volunteers

safely, ensuring all necessary checks are made;

sharing information about child protection and good practice with children, parents, staff and volunteers; sharing information about concerns with agencies, who need to know, and involving parents and children appropriately; providing effective management

for staff and volunteers through supervision, support and training. Equal Opportunities and Inclusion

We believe that every child is entitled to equal access to an engaging curriculum regardless of race, gender, class or ability and we are committed to promoting a learning environment that includes all pupils and celebrates difference and diversity.

All children follow the National Curriculum for English and maths. The afternoon curriculum is organised around themes - geography, history, science, art, music, design and technology, French and PSHCE (personal social health citizenship education). The curriculum is further enhanced through visits and visitors, journeys and weeks dedicated to particular themes. Teachers aim to challenge the pupils with targets for learning and pupil progress is tracked and assessed constantly.

The Curriculum

Our aims are: To meet the needs of learners of

all abilities and interests. Develop pupils learning, personal

and social skills. To promote collaborative work,

encouraging children to help each other and work together to refine and develop their thinking.

To provide rich and inspirational learning environments that

prepare children to engage with and contribute to the world around them.

We believe that it is important for all our pupils to have many different opportunities to participate in extra-curricular events.

Music and sport are keenly promoted at Parklands and this is evident in our two

choirs, orchestra and a staged musical performed each June. Sporting opportunities include football, cricket, cross country, athletics and judo.

We provide a stimulating environ-

ment to ensure that all children make progress with their learning.

We closely monitor the progress of

our pupils with SEN and provide additional support for learning.

We collaborate with outside agencies to ensure that our families

receive the support they need.

The Inclusion Manager is always willing to discuss any concerns you

may have about your child’s education.

Our Behaviour Policy has been devised with the assistance of our Pupil Council. All pupils have viewed and discussed our Behaviour and Anti-Bullying Policies during PSHCE sessions. We know that effective learning takes place when we have high expectations of pupil behaviour. We expect all pupils to attend school every day and on time. We have a uniform policy and expect parents to co-operate with school on this.

Homework is set to compliment class teaching and is an integral part of pupils’ work. Mobile phones are not permitted.

We work together to support our pupils, neighbours and friends overseas. When necessary, we seek advice from parents and organisations, who can increase our knowledge of the wider world.

The majority of our pupils come from Parklands Infant School and an Induction meeting for new parents is held in the summer term. A “meet the new teacher “ visit is arranged for the pupils in the weeks before the end of term.

Pupils complete achievement sheets at the end of the autumn and spring terms. Parents are invited to reply to their child’s report.

An Open Day for parents to view pupils’ work is also held at the end of the summer term with pupils conducting guides around school.

Information meetings are also held at various times during the school year.

All parents are contacted via the Group Call Text Message Service if there is an important issue, for example a school closure.

For pupils transferring from the Infant school, please apply before the end of

Year 2 to Havering Council.

Application forms for all parents are available from Havering Council Pupil

Services on 01708 434600 or electronically from their website

www.havering.gov.uk

You are warmly invited to visit the school. The Head Teacher will also be

more than happy to discuss the school with parents.

We look forward to welcoming you to

Parklands Junior School.

Regular attendance at school is vital to ensure your child makes good progress. The educational needs of our children are paramount and holidays must be arranged during the school holiday period.

Leave of absence will not be granted and therefore will be unauthorised during term time. Fines may be issued to parents for unauthorised absence.

There may be exceptional circumstances when the school may authorise an absence. Requests, outlining the reasons for the absence, should be made in writing to the Head Teacher at least 14 days before the period of absence.

Complaints

The staff and governors of Parklands Junior School strive to provide an excellent education for all our pupils. We endeavour to be fair, open and honest when dealing with any complaint, dealing with it sensitively and swiftly. At all times the best interests of the child is paramount.

In the event of a concern or complaint, we encourage parents to speak with their child’s class teacher in the first instance, followed by the Deputy Head or Head Teacher, as appropriate. Our aim is for complaints to be resolved through dialogue. If this dialogue does not achieve a satisfactory resolution parents may refer the matter to the Governing Body. Full details of the Complaints Procedure are available on the School’s website.
