SPORT NEWS

Western Rugby League

On 17 May, my dad and I travelled to Charlestown, in Newcastle, for me to represent the Western Region at the state championships for rugby league.

Leading up to this, we had different training sessions, including a weekend in Young, where we were put through our paces. This also included a trial match against Riverina. We knew it would be a hard match but we turned up and delivered. We beat Riverina, which gave us a boost of confidence for the state champs. It was a great experience for the boys and I. These training sessions were great as I was able to get to know the boys and the coaches really well.

We were from all over the region, Lithgow, Orange, West Wyalong, Molong, Mudgee, Orana Heights, Mulyan, Perthville and Dubbo. Parkes was well represented with myself and Jaylin Moran and Lachie Thomas from Parkes East Public School. We were all ready and excited to hit the field.

At Young, I was fortunate enough to be named vice-captain of the team. I was thrilled to be vice-captain because it gave me a boost of confidence.

Our first match was against Sydney North. We went down 16-4 but rose up to beat South Coast 10-4.The next day we had to get up early to verse Hunter. We defeated Hunter 6-4. It was a tough game but we came out on top. Next, we were up against North Coast; we drew 6-6. In the afternoon, we had the toughest match of our pool against Sydney West. We lost 22-10, which meant we played Mackillop in the playoff for 5th and 6th. Unfortunately, Mackillop got the better of us, winning 10-0. We came 6th and that’s the best Western has done in 11 years!

This is one of the great highlights of the year so far. It was an excellent experience because of three full days of tough competitive footy. We played 5 games over 3 days.

Western Hockey

My name is Shaykharn Hornery and I was playing in Newcastle for Western Hockey. I stayed at the Jesmond Villas Motel along with my other Parkes friends who made it into the team.

On the first day we versed three teams. We had a draw on our first game 3-3, won our second game and won our last game. People said I had the best dribble on our last game because I had one hand on the stick and I ran outside of the line and I had the ball inside the field. We had pizza that night with my friends. It was fun.

Day two wasn’t that good because we lost two of our games and won one, which we all felt a bit upset about but our coach, Diane Daymond said, “Oh well”, and organised dinner for the team that night. We went to dinner at a restaurant called Wests. It is a three story building with a variety of food places. I had a steak with mushroom sauce and a side of chips. It was delicious.

On day three I woke up exhausted. That day didn’t go so well. We lost all of our games and we were all tired. Day four was alright but we got beaten against Polding and there were some injuries on the field.

My experience being in the team was amazing and I was glad to have fun. Even though no one from my team made it to state, it was the thought that counted.

In June, the Boys’ Western Hockey went to Lismore to play at the state championships. When we got to Lismore we had to play three games straight off the bat and three the next day. We were undefeated till the last game on the second day and that was against CIS-Combined Independent Schools and they beat us 5-1. So we made it into the semis but before we went back to the hotel we went to our team dinner. The next day for the semis, we versed Sydney North and they won 4-2. Later that day we played for third and fourth position. At half time they were winning, 3-0, and then we caught up and won 4-3. Our western hockey team came third.

Two of our players, Joel MacGregor and Flynn Thompson were selected for the state team. Ewan Moody was awarded the Western Medal for his performance. We had a great time and enjoyed our week of hockey.

Regional Championships – Tennis PSSA

Last Friday our tennis team played the regional championships against Ungarie Central School at the Parkes Tennis courts.

Our team found this round much closer and more difficult to keep the scoresheet clean. While Faith, Ella and Flynn managed a win in their singles, playing doubles was more of a challenge. Our boys had definitely met their match and played some great tennis to push the Ungarie team. In the mixed doubles, both teams managed to come away with the points, even though one nearly went to a tie breaker, giving us the win for the day.

We finished with a 6 sets to 2 win, which doesn’t reflect how close each set really was. Congratulations Faith, Ella, Flynn and Tyson on being the Western Region champions!!
