Welcome to the 2018 school year. This year promises much in the way of opportunity for students, parents and staff of Parkes High School. It has been a hectic start to the year and we have welcomed many new staff to the Parkes High School community. I am looking forward to leading the school in 2018 and I am keen to proactively engage with all stakeholders in making this school the school of choice for all community members. Our students have returned to school refreshed and very keen to engage with what will be a productive year.

I would like to offer a very warm welcome to the parents of our students in Year 7. I took the opportunity to meet the Year 7 group on day one and was really impressed with their enthusiasm for the commencement of their high school years. They are especially fortunate to have Mrs Petal Moran as their Year Advisor, and Peta has worked tirelessly in assuring the transition to high school will be a happy, en-gaging and rewarding experience for all students. I had the great fortune to see many of our incoming Year 7 students at the end of last year at their respective end of year assemblies for primary school, and am buoyed by their potential to contribute much to our school with their academic and sporting talents, leadership qualities and dedication to achieving at a high level.

Year 7 Meet The Teacher Evening: All Year 7 students have been given a Parkes High School diary, as part of their introduction to Parkes High School. The re-introduction of the student diary is geared towards developing more defined communication with parents, building a stronger academic focus and study patterns for students. The diary also contains a strong wellbeing focus and contains a wellbeing program that will allow classroom teachers and Year Advisors to provide a highly effective range of focuses for students related to study, anti-bullying, peer relationships and social and personal wellbeing. I am looking forward to meeting parents of our Year 7 stu-dents at the evening set down for the Wednesday 21 February.

Student Diaries: Diaries have been purchased for sale to the rest of the school population and will be sold at cost for $5.00. I encourage all parents to purchase a diary as they will form an integral part of the schooling of your son or daughter. They have been produced in full colour and in line with the introduction of other wellbeing focuses that will be rolled out throughout the year at Parkes High School. Already a large number of students have purchased the diary.

Student Wellbeing: Our school has also introduced a new Head Teacher role to deal with the design and implementation of a stronger wellbeing focus at Parkes High School. Miss Hannah Barber has been successful in gaining the Head Teacher Wellbeing role and hasenthusiastically set about planning for a rich range of experiences for all our student body in 2018.

The Year Ahead: As part of my brief for 2018 I want to introduce a stronger and more defined emphasis on wellbeing for students. Our students live in a world in which they are challenged daily, and these challenges often bring with them associated matters that our students find difficulty with as they journey through the often confronting situations of which they are now part. I have been working closely with all our Year Advisors in designing a range of affirmative actions which provide greater emphasis on building the skills that will allow students to deal more effectively with many of these challenges. We will be placing much emphasis on anti-bullying and the new Dump on Bullying Program, along with fostering a culture of connectedness, collegiality and learning at our school. I have a strong belief that happy students are productive students, able to contribute to their academic success, sporting achievements, and personaldevelopment as committed and proactive citizens of our local community. It is important that our students feel a strong sense of pride in our school, and are committed to contributing to its forward progression, and one with which they feel ownership.

School Uniform: I was especially pleased that our students presented on day one in full uniform and I congratulate parents for endorsing the uniform requirements of the school. Uniform is important in building connectedness to the school and is an excellent demonstration of showing pride in our school. Our uniform is a great one, and students who wear it are identifying and exemplifying their desire to be part of our school. In this way I encourage all parents to continue their excellent work in ensuring our students show their connectedness to the community of our school through wearing the uniform of the school. I also urge anyone who needs assistance to ensure their children can wear the uniform to contact the school and access the excellence range of uniform available through the front office. The Deputy Principals can also assist with the provision of uniform for students.

It is important that all students are active participants in school and I urge all parents to encourage their children to wear the uniform with pride and as a way to demonstrate their commitment to their school. Excellent attendance, participation in learning, participation in school activities and good behaviour are values I want to instill as a feature of the student body at Parkes High School in 2018.

Staff Development Day: On our staff development day I introduced to staff three very important words. Capture, Connect and Contribute is a summary of what I would like this year to be about regardless of whether you are a staff member, student or parent. I would like to see a year in which we capture the good aspects of our school, connect to them as important to the core practice of the school and then set about contributing in our various roles to the growth and prosperity that will eventuate when we have a common goal or philosophy.

Australia Day Activities: I had the pleasure of attending the Australia Day celebrations in Parkes and would like to congratulate a number our students who received public recognition in some of the citizen categories. Yasmin Potts, Gracie Denham Jones and Gordon Richter received nominations, along with Brenton Hawken (a former student of the school). Yasmin was named Young Citizen of the Year, a worthy award for a dedicated and enthusiastic young woman who contributed much to our school and community. Gracie was named the winner of the Junior Cultural Award and was recognised for her outstanding success across a number of cultural areas.

I will close in saying I am buoyed by the opportunity that has been presented to me as Relieving Principal for 2018 and am looking forward to experiencing a rich and diversified year, possibly one filled with challenges, but certainly a year in which we all capture, connect and contribute to the ongoing development of our school. Together, and with these three words in mind, the staff, parents and students of Parkes High School will be a formidable team, and our collective efforts will do much good for our students and our school.

In this spirit I am looking forward to working with all parents and students in 2018.

Duane Rhall

PBL Fun Day Parkes High School is a proud Positive Behaviour for Learning School. Across 2017 we, as a school community, have seen a variety of individual and school community achievements. Overall, our students have continued to take pride in embodying our school expectations of being Respectful, Responsible and Safe. At Parkes High School, we value the contributions of all students; due to this, we held a celebratory event to recognise this commitment to their learning.

Pictured below are some of our students and teachers enjoying themselves at our inaugural PBL Fun Day.

Students who are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, upset or angry are able to come to the Learning Hub to debrief and learn coping skills.

The Learning Hub is also open every recess and lunch for students wishing to do quiet activities, or spend time working on class related learning activities.

Every Thursday afternoon the Learning Hub is open from 3.30pm for students wanting Maths help. Ms Vere, as well as a rotating roster of other teachers, to provide academic support for any student.

As the focus is learning in the Learning Hub, any student attending the hub needs to come prepared with subject specific work to last the length of the period, a note from their current class teacher, as well as a positive mindset to engage in their learning.

We would like to welcome back all staff and students in 2018. Firstly we have made a few changes in the canteen including

The introduction of our Facebook page (Parkes High Canteen) which will keep you up to date on all things happening in the canteen. We would appreciate if you could please like and share this page. Please see link below.

https://www.facebook.com/Parkes-High-Canteen-546521789055883/Some price changes and also menu changes. We have weekly specials which are currently the same as last year although we are excited to introduce home made pizza on Tuesday with gluten free options available. We will also be doing daily specials to trial exciting new recipes.

The school Canteen is a food service shop which sells lunches and snacks to students and staff. It provides a nutritious range of food in line with the Department of Education's Healthy Canteen Policy. The Canteen does not sell products that contain nuts.

Apart from the convenience of having a food outlet on the school premises, the Canteen also raises much needed funds that the P & C uses to supplement the school budget. While the prices charged are kept to a minimum, running costs have in-creased in recent times and these have be reflected in the prices charged.

How can you help? Any parent who can spend a few hours one day per month, or more frequently, is encouraged to contact us on 68622805. Your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

Please note that ordering your lunch is encouraged as it guarantees you will not miss out on your choice. Lunches must be ordered via the canteen before the completion of recess. All staff and volunteers must be given total respect, courtesy and co-operation at all times by all students.
