All Parents: Gonski Funding

The School Funding Amendment Bill is before the Australian Parliament at the present time. NSW currently has a signed agreement for the delivery of the Gonski school funding arrangements. There are many benefits to our children with the delivery of the ‘full’ Gonski. The Federal government is currently proposing to step away from the existing agreement and avoid paying the final two years according to the signed agreement. This will result in a significant reduction in the promised funding to our school. Some summary points: The School Funding Amendment Bill will be debated in Senate from Monday 19 June 2017, (already passed through the government-controlled Lower House) Will see only 40% of the funding of the original agreement honoured, bringing about a small

increase of $50 per child per year for the next ten years Will cap Federal government funding of public schools to 20% of the school resource standard

(SRS) and private schools to 80% of the standard Means that schooling for children will not be funded according to need Abandons the increased role for the Federal government in the funding of disadvantaged

students, over 80% of whom attend public schools Will abolish the requirement of the Federal government to increase, by 4.7% annually, funding

to a school until it reaches the school resource standard Will lock in different funding roles for the Federal and State governments instead of developing

an integrated model as originally proposed by Gonski Due to the scheduling of the matter in the Senate we need to act on this in the next three weeks. Please log into the “I Give A Gonski” website and have your say in support of our students.

Ross To Represent Region At Youth Parliament: Congratulations to our School Captain, Ross Collins, (pictured right) who has been selected through an application process, to represent our region at the Youth Parliament in Sydney during the upcoming school holidays. This is an outstanding opportunity for Ross as he will travel to Sydney and spend time in Parliament House debating with other young people from across NSW. Book Author Visit: The group of Parkes High School students who met Australian children’s book author Morris Gleitzman at the eBooks launch at Lithgow High School last week had a wonderful time. The group were very excited upon their return and talked about how they were able to chat with and ask questions of the author. Thank you to Ms Tracy Dawson and Ms Shelley Klein for facilitating this great opportunity. Visit To Parkes Radio Telescope: A group of science-minded students had the opportunity to discuss all things Astronomy with leading scientists at the Parkes Radio Telescope this week. The students had expressed interest through their science teacher and had a tour of the inside workings of the telescope. The students were able to ask questions and discuss recent discoveries made at our very own Parkes Radio Telescope. Tennis Success: Congratulations to our Open Girls Tennis team, Yasmin, Phoebe and Hannah Potts and Holly McColl who are Western Region Champions! Our Open Boys Team went down valiantly as our number one and two players are currently in America at a special training camp. Our boys, Koby and Jayden Wirth, Harry Dawson and Lachlan Tassel, took the top players from other teams to the wire, which is an outstanding effort. Thank you to Mr Andrew Pigram and the cheer squad who supported our students. New Jacket: The P&C looked at a sample of a jacket that has a microfiber out shell, which is water resistant, and a polar fleece lining that would be a much warmer option than the current school jacket. The P&C would like to look at options for a waterproof jacket before making any decisions. We now have two other waterproof options for the next P&C meeting. This jacket would be an additional option for our students. Please be mindful that our school uniform has been ratified by our P&C and as such it is a core rule and requirement of all government schools that students wear school uniform. Most items of our school uniform are available from our school office. If parents or care providers are having difficulties in purchasing our school uniform, please contact me at school. Safe Respectful and Responsible: I have spoken to our students and explained that my expectations are they will be safe, respectful and responsible at school. I have also explained that this year my priorities with the student body are attendance, adherence to wearing our school uniform and our student learning culture. Attendance: Our overall attendance rate is concerning. Students MUST be at school unless there is a justified reason to be absent. Cold weather is not a reasonable excuse to be absent from school. Student Learning Culture: All our teachers are now undertaking professional learning in HOW2Learn. This stands for Higher Order Ways to Learn. Part of this process is to develop strategies students can use to support their own learning. Students need to be actively engaged in their learning to achieve subject specific learning outcomes and to progress along the learning continuum. Learning is a dynamic process and it needs to be continually practiced. Our next P&C Meeting for 2017 will be held in the Conference Room (just along the corridor from the front office) on Tuesday 27

th June at 7.30 pm. I look forward to seeing all our new and continuing parents.

Please contact the school (6862 1844) or make an appointment if you need to discuss any aspect of your child’s education or if you need clarification on any issues or events your child may be involved in. The results of our Athletics Carnival will be published in the next newsletter. Please be aware that all visitors to the school, including parents, must report to the office in Albert Street. At Parkes High School we are safe, respectful and responsible. Mrs Sandra Carter Principal

Captains Meet The Governor

On Wednesday June 1, Parkes High School captains, Yasmin Potts and Ross Collins, accompanied by SRC coordinator Mrs Justine Morrissey, flew to Sydney to have the incredible opportunity to meet his Excellency General David Hurley, Governor of NSW and take a tour of Government House in Sydney.

The captains toured the Gothic revolutionary inspired homestead followed by an address by the Governor. He explained what the Governor of NSW does, how he was appointed and even spoke on the issue whether Australia should become a republic.

After the address, students then had a one on one meet and greet with the Governor, where they could ask questions. The governor and his wife, Mrs Lynda Hurley, were both very down to earth and approachable and he even asked about the Parkes Elvis Festival.

Young leaders from all over NSW attended the leadership educational program and also had the opportunity to attend State Parliament. They met with several local members including the member for Orange, Phil Donato and the Premier of NSW Gladys Berejiklian, where they each gave a candid snapshot of life in politics.

This was followed by the rare opportunity to attend an actual sitting of parliament, where politicians were debating the is-sues of medicinal cannabis and the amalgamation of local councils. Yasmin and Ross both said the day was certainly an experience to remember.
