The President’s Corner The Parke comprises 503 of the 8,455 homes in the Ocean Pines Homeowners Association. The OPA fee of $921 per household per year times 503 homes equals $463,263 in as- sessments Parke homeowners pay. Why am I telling you this? OPA is in the midst of an election. Four candidates are running for two vacant seats and some very interesting view- points were expressed during the first candidate forum on 21 June. For example, some candidates are running on a platform to reduce expenses by shutting down The Cove (formerly the Yacht Club) in the off-season (October-April) and focusing on the newly renovated Country Club as our primary hang- out. Not such a far-fetched money saving idea considering the Pines becomes somewhat of a ghost town as tourism drops and snowbirds go south for the winter. As a community we have a vested interest in the fiduciary health of OPA, so please read what these candidates have to say and vote. OPA ballots will be mailed on 11 July. If you see something, say something. I know this is a Homeland Security-coined phrase, but I want to take this a step further in our community. I recently learned that the chil- dren of an owner, whose empty home was in foreclosure and without electricity, were occupying the home using a sleeping bag! If you observe something this bizarre, immediately call the Ocean Pines Police. Also, if you notice correspondence taped to the front door or garage of a nearby residence, call the Clubhouse and let them know. This is evidence of several possibilities: 1) OPA has placed a lien on the house for non- payment of their assessment; 2) the bank has had the house winterized and it is in foreclosure; or 3) a courier has tried to serve legal documents announcing the home will soon go to auction. The staff will take photos of these documents which will allow us to monitor the situation. At the 31 May Board meeting, Dale Buley was appointed as interim treasurer to replace me because I can’t be president and treasurer at the same time. The point is, we need a resi- dent to step up and take on the treasurer’s role. We already reduced the treasurer’s duties, so it’s a commitment of about seven hours of a person’s time per month. Please read in this edition what Linda Olsen (chair of the Design Review Committee, DRC) has to say about application forms. Even after spending $$ to print and mail the revised guidelines to each homeowner this spring, we have people making exterior changes to their properties that may not be allowed or requires prior approval. The Parke is now 17 years old. In the past, either the developer or a previous DRC had granted approval for something that is no longer permitted (faux deer, for example). If you don’t understand the guide- lines, call someone who is more familiar with them and has the experience to help you through this necessary and important process.
