• SAT exam dates are May 7th (held at Briar Woods High School) and June 4th (held at Park View High School. The deadline for registering for the May test is April 8th and the deadline for the June test is May 6th. Juniors should plan to take at least one SAT test before entering 12th grade. Since PROM is June 3rd, Juniors may want to consider sign-ing up for the May 7th SAT. Visit www.collegeboard.com for exam day pointers and free practice tests. We recom-mend that if you know of any colleges that you are definitely applying to that you report your scores the day you take your test (reporting your scores this way is free). If you are on free/reduced lunch, see Ms. Hatcher in the career cen-ter for a SAT fee waiver, which may help you qualify for college application fee waivers next fall and save you a lot of money. Also, make sure that you try to visit colleges this summer that you might be interested in applying to.

A Successful JobA Successful JobA Successful JobA Successful Job----forforforfor----aaaa----Day ProgramDay ProgramDay ProgramDay Program The Loudoun County School-Business Partnership sponsored the Job-for-a-Day Program for high school juniors on March 2 and March 16, 2011. Students who participated in the program spent one day with a person in the community who is involved in a career in which the student is interested. The goals were to allow students to explore a field in which they have an interest or aptitude. The program also strengthened students’ awareness of business, industry, and business enterprises

within the community and heightened students’ decision-making processes related to life skills and career choices. Students had hands-on experiences with people, places, and things not always avail-able in the school environment. This year, 28 Park View Juniors participated in the program and visited locations such as a Veterinary Hospital, dog groomers, healthcare (included nursing, allopathic physician, medical tech lab,) an ar-chitect, Loudoun county sheriff’s office for law enforcement and criminal justice, AOL for software engineer, National Weather Service, Dulles Airport with Southwest Airlines, an accountant, the Hair Port Salon & Day Spa and also a Forensic Science lab. Dear Parent/Guardian of Rising Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Grade Student(s): The State of Virginia requires that all students entering middle school and ninth, tenth and eleventh grades must have a diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (Tdap) vaccine booster unless the student received a tetanus-containing vaccine within the previous five years before the start of the 2011-2012 school year. Since tetanus is part of the Tdap, it is recommended that the Tdap vaccine booster not be given closer than five years after the last tetanus immunization. The primary purpose of this requirement is to add protection for pertussis (whooping cough). Children are typi-cally vaccinated against diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus (DPT) as babies. The last diphtheria, pertussis, teta-nus (DPT) vaccine is given to children between the ages of four and six. Five to ten years after the last immuni-zation is given, the protection against pertussis (whooping cough) begins to wear off. This vaccine is incorpo-rated into the vaccine that is given for diphtheria and tetanus. The vaccine is known as Tdap, Adacel, or Boos-trix. Two different Tdap vaccines booster for pertussis are available for use in children and adults ten to sixty-four years old. Adacel is recommended for children and adults ages eleven to sixty-four. Boostrix is recom-mended for children ages ten to eighteen. Please review your child’s immunization record. The tetanus immunization may be listed as T, Td, Dtap, Tdap, Adacel, or Boostrix. If your child’s last tetanus immunization was before August 29, 2006, please have the Tdap vaccine booster immunization administered before the start of the 2011-2012 school year. If your physician chooses to use Adacel and your child will not be eleven before August 29, 2011, you must submit a note from your child’s physician stating that your child has a medical exemption because the physician will be administer-ing Adacel when your child is eleven years of age. Immunizations may be obtained from your physician, military clinics, or the Loudoun County Health Department. The Loudoun County Health Department will provide the immunizations that are required for school attendance at no cost. The Health Department is located in the Shenandoah Building at 102 Heritage Way, N.E., Suite 100, Leesburg, (phone number 703-777-0236). Immunizations are administered by appointment. If you choose to go to the Health Department for this immunization, you must bring a current immunization record.

For rising sixth graders, documentation of the Tdap vaccine booster, any vaccine containing tetanus given after August 29, 2006, or a medical exemption if your child will not be eleven by August 29, 2011, should be given to the nurse or health clinic assistant at your child’s elementary school this school year. If your child will not re-ceive the Tdap vaccine booster before the end of this school year, documentation should be given to the middle school or high school this summer. Your child will not be allowed to start school without this immuniza-tion, documentation of a tetanus-containing vaccine within the previous five years of the beginning of the 2011-2012 school year, or a medical exemption. A list of students who require this immunization will be provided to each middle school at the end of this school year. There will be no grace period for your child to begin middle school on August 29 without this vaccine. All new seventh, eighth, ninth, tenth, and eleventh grade students will be required to have documentation of a Tdap vaccine booster unless the student has received a tetanus-containing vaccine within the previous five years prior to the start of school year 2011-2012. Students must have documentation of this immunization in order to begin school on August 29, 2011. There will be no grace period for your child to begin school on August 29 without this vaccine. Library Media Center NewsLibrary Media Center NewsLibrary Media Center NewsLibrary Media Center News

In the February-March edition of “Library Media Center

News” we told you about events in the library like Teen Tech

Week. Well, “Mix & Mash @ your PVHS library” during Teen

Tech Week was a smashing success! We celebrated with

custom-made “Trailers and Trivia” videos that were shown

in the library each morning before school. Made in collabo-

ration with Potomac Falls High School library, these videos

featured trailers from technology-related movies like The

Social Network, Ironman, The Net, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to

the Galaxy, and Tron followed by trivia about aspects of

technology, such as internet safety and gaming facts. In the

front of the library, a five-foot library-made robot stood sen-

try over books about technology, technology-related movie

posters, and technology trivia posters. Bookmarks were

made that featured the Teen Tech Week robot and Social

Networking tips. Our display case held technologies of the

past, such as a manual typewriter, wooden radio, and a

35mm film camera with detachable flashbulb. Students got

a kick out of seeing what was once considered state-of-the-

art, which they now consider “old” and “retro”. Thanks to all

those PVHS staff members who allowed their personal be-

longings and mementos to go on display.

On April 1st, wish our Battle of the Books team luck as they

take on Broad Run High School, Dominion High School, and

Potomac Falls High School in the Eastern Loudoun County

Semi-Final Battle of the Books competition. Groups of five

students at a time will take to the stage at Dominion High

School to answer questions about certain books. Each

team member has read at least five books and has become

an expert on those books. This year’s book selection in-

cluded The Brothers Torres, Chains, The Immortal Life of

Henrietta Lacks, The Last Thing I Remember, Leviathan,

The Looking Glass Wars, The Man Who Loved Books Too

Much, Right Behind You, The Secret Story of Sonia Rodri-

guez, and Streams of Babel. Best wishes to the team as

they put a year’s worth of reading to the test.

Another exciting event coming up in the library is National

Library Week, which is April 10th to 16th. The National Li-

brary Week theme this year is “Create your own story @ your

PVHS library”. In order to celebrate, Battle of the Books

Book Club members and PVHS Library League helpers will

be painting the spirit rock outside Park View. The rock art

will feature a mobile, blue skies, and birds to match the

National Library Association’s official National Library Week

logo for 2011. The PVHS library will be giving away themed

bookmarks and will be festively decorated to celebrate.

Interestingly, the entire month of April is SchoolSchoolSchoolSchool Library

Month.

As a special treat during National Library Week, teen lit au-

thor Chris Crutcher will visit our school. Mr. Crutcher is an

award-winning author who has written such books as Whale

Talk, Athletic Shorts, and Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes. As

part of Loudoun County Public Library’s “it’s all write” short

story contest, Mr. Crutcher is visiting the area and will stop

by Park View on Monday April 11th. Students will gather in

the back of the library to hear Mr. Crutcher speak about his

books and what it is like to be an author.

You may contact the librarians with any comments or ques-tions by phone (571-434-4500) or email ([email protected], [email protected]). Or, stop by to see us! As Marilyn Johnson says in her book This Book Is Overdue! How Librarians and Cybrarians Can Save Us All, “In tough times, a librarian is a terrible thing to waste.” We strive to help PVHS students and staff daily in ways big and small and would love to help parents as well. We hope to hear from you soon.

“School Profiles” Provide Insight into Minority Student Achievement In a few short clicks, you can gain valuable information about minority student achievement in your school by visiting your school’s website and clicking on “School Profile.” Each school profile contains information about your school’s enrollment by ethnicity, school accreditation and AYP status, as well as test results.

Parent Participation to Be Focus of Next MSAAC Executive Meeting Newly elected MSAAC Vice President, Rhonda Bady Hill, has established a goal to visit every school in Loudoun County, if necessary, to ensure that every school is represented by a parent delegate and alternate on MSAAC. At MSAAC’s February 2011 meeting, only 18 of 77 LCPS schools were represented by parent delegates. In many cases, entire school clusters are not represented. Please join us at our next Executive Committee meeting if you would like to help in our outreach efforts to increase parent involvement and/or contact Rhonda at [email protected].
