The opening ceremony will take place Saturday, Aug. 10 at 1 p.m. The closing ceremony will be held Saturday, Aug. 31, also at 1 p.m. The three weeks in between will showcase the work of many AWA members in a wide variety of mediums. The exhibit includes the Women’s Wall of Art, an AWA silent auction. Each piece is cre- ated for and donated to the auc- tion by AWA members. The silent auction will last throughout the exhibition. Proceeds will bene- fit the AWA Student Art Awards Program, which was established to recognize and encourage local students who have shown prom- ise in visual arts. This event offers an opportu- nity to see the work of local women artists and speak to them about their artwork and creative process. The exhibition features the work of Lily J. Abraham, Kate Anderson, Gretchen Blais, Bonnie Randall Boller, Jane Crescent Brundage, Renee Doty, Patricia Edith, Mi’Chelle Fredrick, Loretta Franke Valero, Wendy Lee Gadzuk, N. Sun Staff Reports Each year, the Frank Bette Center for the Arts (FBCA) invites artists from around the nation to paint in Alameda. The works pro- duced will be on display at Alameda South Shore Center on Saturday, Aug. 3 as part of the Eighth Annual Plein Air Paintout (PAPo). No less than forty artists were juried into this annual event cel- ebrating the unique charms of Alameda. The artists painted on the streets, at the shores and in the parks of the Island City beginning Monday, July 29. The chosen to be on display can be viewed near the frog pond from noon until 5 p.m. After the viewing on Saturday, the collection will be available for viewing or purchase at FBCA. The center is located at 1601 Paru St. at Lincoln Avenue. The center is open Wednesday through Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and on Sunday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free; donations are appreciated. Sun Staff Reports The city of Alameda Housing Authority received the prestigious National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials (NAHRO) Awards of Merit on Tuesday, July 24, for its environ- mentally conscious Independence Plaza landscape renovation. “NAHRO members have been leading the way with innovative solutions to address resident ser- vices, management and operations, affordable housing preservation and sustainable development, and economic revitalization in their communities,” said NAHRO presi- dent Betsey Martens. “They have stepped up and taken advantage of opportunities to find new and cre- ative ways to address local housing needs, and we are proud to recog- nize their achievements.” Independence Plaza, a 186-unit senior citizen apartment complex built in 1991, featuring two large ponds and water fountains, expan- sive areas of lawn, shrubs and trees. Over the past 20 years, the costs to maintain the ponds and water fountains, the excessive use of water and overall decline of the lawn, shrubs and trees drove the Housing Authority to refurbish the site. They added more than 5,000 new drought-tolerant native plants that encompass current Bay-friendly landscape practice, save water, preserves resources and provide a peaceful environ- ment for residents and their visi- tors to enjoy. As part of the weekend festivities, there were also two stages with a number of popu- lar Bay Area bands playing classic rock and R&B favor- ites. Local bands The Perfect Beast (formerly Bumpy Road) and The Ben Luis Group were featured in the line-up this year while The Sun Kings, one of Alameda’s most endearing bands, packed the street at the end of the show with a perfor- mance that got festival-goers of all ages dancing and singing to classic Beatles songs.
