Falcon FIRST® LEGO® LeagueOne of the Falcon First Lego League teams is working on finding a wider variety of food to grow in space for their team project. They researched what plants had already been grown in space and what conditions they had been grown in. The International Space Station (ISS) is 71 degrees F, 40% humidity, and has high levels of carbon dioxide. They researched and identified four plants that could survive in the ISS environment; squash, faro, Russian Banana Fingerling potatoes, and cilantro. They narrowed it down to cilantro and decided to grow some. The cilantro is planted in an aquarium with grow lights in Miss Norby’s classroom. By Hazel Striker and Alexis ScheidSome people think that First Lego league is all about building Legos and programing, but it is not. Along with Legos, there is a theme each year. Last year it was hydrodynamics, and we had a fund raiser for building a well. This year it is space. There were tons of problems we could choose from, but we chose trash. It does not only pose a problem in taking up space, but it could have a health effect on the astronauts. Our team thought we could use a plasma incinerator. It heats the trash to about 17,000 degrees. The International Space Station can hold about 2 metric tons of trash in which they send down in transports, but we want to get rid of it. If we get rid of most of the trash, the astronauts have more room for scientific research and technology. We made a model of how we thought the plasma incinerator would work as part of our presentation. By Samuel RedingtonThe Falcon First Lego League teams are coached by Miss Norby. Two mentor volunteers from John Deere assist the teams: Ethan Zillinger and Mark Jones. (Mark Jones is Mrs. Isaak’s father). Sixteen PCS students in 4-6th grades comprise the three Falcon First Lego League teams.

Computer Science Principles Class Creates ScenesGroups in Mr. Burgstahler’s Computer Science Principles class developed code that created a scene. One group’s project was especially exceptional and was used as the example shown at the code.org conference that Mr. Burgstahler attended. Visit bit.ly/codescene to see their work.*All of Mr. Burgstahler’s computer classes took part in the Hour of Code. Hour of Code gives students the opportunity to develop apps and programs and learn a little bit about what it takes to make computers run.

Interesting ProjectsMrs. Howe’s Classes- Learned to play dreidel and dance the Horace 8th grade Bible. - 9th grade Geography students researched castles as they lay groundwork for continued study of castle life and feudalism and its effects on Europe’s history, culture, traditions, and way of life….

Mr. Nelson’s 10th grade World History History ClassAutopsy of an Empire project. Students used the analogy of an obituary and an autopsy report to depict the success and eventual downfall of a classical civilization (approximately 600 BCE – 600 CE). Each body part represents some element of the empire, for example the head = significant leaders, hands = art and architecture, and the feet = trade routes, currencies, and goods traded. Students created the posters and also had to write a one-page obituary that reflect the lasting contributions of the empire and how the empire died.

Moms in Prayer“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight.” (Prov. 3:5-6)Do you ever worry about your kids? Do you want God’s best to become a reality in their lives? My pastor says, “if you want to know what you are depending on God for, check your prayer list.” I don’t know about you, but there’s no area I need His strength more than in PARENTING!Park Christian invests many amazing “seeds” in our kids but (like Paul said in 1 Cor. 3) it’s God who makes things grow! Each Friday, moms from PCS join together to pray. We ask the Lord to give our kids courage and determination. We ask Him to reveal sin in their lives. We ask Him to protect them. We ask Him to draw out their gifts and to give them wisdom. We ask Him to make our kids more like Christ.Do you want to experience joy and breakthrough that can only come by praying with others? Whether you‘re seasoned in prayer or just a beginner, the simple “Moms in Prayer International” format gives every person language to praise and thank God, to pour out specific requests for our kids and schools, and to grow strong in FAITH as we agree together in “one accord” prayer. Moms in Prayer currently meets on Friday mornings from 8:10-9:15. We would LOVE to include you! Contact Rita Ludeman (866.4399) or Becky Carlson with questions (212.5277).--From PCS parent Becky Carlson

How did God lead you to Park Christian School?Brendan and I grew up in Fergus Falls and moved to Fargo shortly afterward. We have five boys, and as our family grew, our public school experiences felt rather big and overwhelming, especially as a large family split between schools. In this season, the Lord stirred an unsettledness in our hearts. We committed to pray regularly over three areas of our lives, including school for our boys. That April, we toured PCS and thought, “we’ve got to make this work.” God revealed to us we need Christians around our family, including a Biblical community for our kids all day long for them to thrive. It was a huge commitment, but the Lord moved our hearts to say one yes after another, working out every circumstance for us to be here in His perfect timing.

How have you seen your children grow in your time at PCS?When kids feel loved in Christ they can thrive academically and emotionally. We’ve seen that in our boys. One of our boys struggled to meet the unreachable expectations of his teacher, which led to an emotionally draining year for him. His self-esteem in the classroom was very low. At PCS, he has felt love and grace from his teacher. He has experienced the love of Jesus through his teacher! What a gift that is to him and us! We have seen a transformation in his heart! As he experienced more peace in his classroom, he became more comfortable to succeed academically. When we changed schools, we saw an immediate improvement in school work, independence, and discipline in our kids’ studies.

How has PCS met or exceeded your expectations? It has completely exceeded them! We didn’t fully understand how a Christian atmosphere would affect our kids. Now we’re seeing incredible fruit and we’re only 2 ½ months in! Each week, we see them worshipping in chapel, incorporating the Bible into every subject, and experiencing the love of Christ through students and teachers. The love of Jesus is integrated into every part of the Park experience – including classroom discipline – and it has incredible impact! My oldest recently said, “Mom, I love this school.” In this short time, he has seen the difference! I told my husband, “We have made a lot of good decisions in our lives, but PCS is one of the best.”

What would you tell other families who are praying about joining the Park community? This is a critical season of life for young believers. Through Park, we’ve learned so much about what our kids need, and how important it is to surround them with Christ-followers. In just a few months, we’ve seen such spiritual growth in them. We wonder, “what will five years in this environment look like?” It’s just so exciting! As parents of FIVE enrolled kids, we can confidently say this: Don’t let the money get in the way. It wasn’t easy for us to throw money at such a big decision. If you don’t see a way financially, take a chance and see if the Lord will provide. We believe when you take a step of faith, He will! As we’ve walked this road, our perspective has changed. Now we don’t ask, “will the money be there?” Instead, we believe God WILL make a way. To keep our kids here . . . we will rearrange our lives to keep them at Park. We would change our priorities to make it work. It has been THAT worthwhile!” Brendan &Trista Giese

The Rest of the StoryWe will tell you part of the Giese story on the Continuous Enrollment postcard (to be received by all current families),

and part of their story on the January Preview Day invitation (to be received by prospective parents). But the whole story is so good, we didn’t want you to miss any of it, so we hope you enjoy it and are blessed with ‘the rest of the story.’
