Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ February 10, 2019 Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ February 17, 2019
Be Bold ~ Be Catholic
Our Lord's Valentine to Us
Love is easy to understand when it's tangible-a dozen red roses, candy and dinner out for Valentine's Day with a spouse or someone else dear to us. A store-bought or hand-scrawled card from a child. An individually crafted prayer shawl or scarf. We recognize these things as outpourings of love, and we are filled with feelings of tenderness and gratitude for the giver.
Our Lord's love for us isn't always as obvious. But it's always there—sure, quiet and constant. When we open our souls to that love, we grow in faith. We come to believe that he will stand by us and guide us through times of pain and heartache and sorrow. That sense of confidence and trust is the best valentine we can receive, and it's there for us every day. It's also the only gift we can give God. And, it's the one he most desires. Deacon Gerard
Thanks to Dieter Stuermer and Ron Keating from St. Cecilia’s, for taking many hours and much work putting together a detailed Maintenance Book
Dear friends ! Fr. Lucio and I have been to several workshops and meetings with our Bishops and our brother priests. During January and February all staff from our Catholic Family of Parishes in Norfolk and Chatham Catholic Family of Parishes are attending three all day workshops to better serve YOU as Parish Teams. All of this is changing the way we do things, whether we like it or not. If we are honest with ourselves, as Catholics, we love our Catholic Faith and traditions but ‘it is not working’ , in terms of the empty pews and most of our families, though very good people are drifting away or left practicing their Catholic Faith. Those of us still attending have a strong faith but statistics tells us that only 5 to 7 percent of Catholics in church are ‘intentional disciples’. Which means are evangelizing and sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ. Allow me to share things we are learning as we attend these workshops. When most of us were young and most people going to church, we attended church or practiced our Faith in this order: behaving, believing, belonging. .This worked for us, as we obeyed our parents or the church, which led to faith, we believe and then had a real sense of belonging, ‘I am a Catholic’. Now life and society has changed and the above pro-cess is not working. People in general are not behaving, the way we expect them to. This does not mean they are bad people, in fact many are more Christian than some of us in the pews. People today ‘need to belong’ first. The best examples I can use are our Protestant sisters and brothers in the ‘born again churches’ or evangelical churches. They first focus on belonging. If you do not show up on a particular Sunday, you may get a phone call, ‘Are you OK we missed you in church’ . When you walk in their churches, you are greeted and welcomed. We can learn a lot from them. So the pattern today is: belonging, believing, behaving. Once a person feels he or she belongs and gets involved, then they believe and develop their faith which leads to behaving, doing good. The above is simplistic but has a lot of truth. So we need more of us, in the pews, the 15 to 20 percent left practicing in the Catholic Church to step up and be ‘intentional disciples’, to Be Bold and Be Catholic ! Do not be afraid to share the Good News of Jesus Christ. We need to break the silence and share our story. Our Catholic Faith has the fullness of Truth in Jesus Christ our savior and Lord. Sherry Wardell, in her book, ‘Intentional Disciples’, invites all Catholics to conver-sion, leading us to be intentional disciples. She mentions five steps: Trust (breaking the mis-trust), spiritual curiosity, spiritual openness, seeking and commitment to Jesus. So what changes are we making ? 1. We are working on Hospitality and Greeting at all of our churches. Unfortunately, very few persons have
signed on, but we have not given up. We will be asking you again to consider helping us. Since you are present to Welcome people, we also ask you to carry up the gifts of wine, bread and the collection.
2. We are just concluding the first Session of ALPHA. The second Session begins March 14, at Our Lady, Queen of Martyrs and all are welcome. ALPHA follows the pattern of, belonging, believing and behaving. All the movies that we use for teaching are excellent and go back to the basics in in our personal relationship with Jesus and our need to belong. ALPHA Sessions one and two will finish with a one day Retreat, Saturday, June 15, at Our Lady, Queen of Martyrs. 3. We are working on using some of ALPHA as an introduction to Marriage Preparation. February 25 to March 25 are five Mondays set aside for couples preparing for marriage. Couples are welcome to join us for these sessions to grow in our faith. The Marriage Preparation Course follows ALPHA , April 5 and 6. 4. Our Family of Parishes Pastoral Council spend much of our time talking about these changes and advising the Pastoral Team, how we can ‘do church better’, how we can evangelize.
5. Finally, we hope to include, some of ALPHA with all Sacramental Preparations next year, but we need a load of volunteers to make this happen, which we hope will come from our two present ALPHA Sessions. Do not blame the children for not being in church. It is their Mom’s and Dad’s responsibility. Once again, we never sit in judgement, just because a person or family is not in church on Sunday, does not mean they have no faith. There are many good Christian people not in our pews on Sunday, and we want them to join us in prayer and worship. Lets welcome them home.
6. Being an intentional disciple means that we are to reach out to others with word and deed. We have a great opportunity to do that now with the ALPHA program. If you have a person that you know that is not practicing, approach with kindness and invite and encourage them to register.
7. PARISH MISSIONS have and continue to be an excellent way to grow in our Catholic Faith and they are always well attended. We try our best to get excellent speakers and presenters. Please mark your calendars. We have two PARISH MISSIONS planned. The weekend of March 30 and 31, at all six masses, with three evenings at 7:00 pm; Sunday, March 31, Monday, April 1 and Tuesday, April 2. Kris Frank a young Catholic evangelist will lead and challenge us. The second PARISH MISSION will be in Advent 2019, the weekend of December 7 and 8, followed by three evenings; Sunday, December 8, Monday, December 9 and Tuesday, December 10, all at 7:00 pm.
Father John Comiskey, the Moderator of the Curia, from the Bishop’s Office will preach this Mission.
We are always looking for other ways to evangelize and celebrate our Catholic Faith. Please feel free to phone or email any person on the Pastoral Team, listed below or the Pastoral Council.
