NOTES FROM FATHER BOB… TWENTY-SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME I write these few thoughts while in Ephesus, Turkey where St. Paul visited, worked, and preached the Good News. It is a beautiful, but I must say, very hot setting. I pray that this note finds my family of St. Cletus Parish well and blessed. I think of you each day as I follow in the footsteps of St. Paul. Know that at each place I go, I ask the Lord, through the intercession of Paul, to watch over each one of you and keep you always in His loving care. It is hard to believe that I have been gone for almost ten weeks now. I truly miss each of you every day. I know that school has already begun for all of our St. Cletus Cardinals and all the children of our parish. I hope the children are excited to begin their studies again. I have had a little jump on you, as I began my studies of St. Paul almost three weeks ago. Always remember, dear children, that learning is a life-long journey. There is so much to learn and know. I am discovering this myself as I walk in St. Paul's footsteps here in Turkey. I will say a special prayer for each of you as I continue my journey to the Holy Land.

After spending several weeks on the theme of “Bread of Life” from John’s Gospel, today's Gospel brings us back to the writings of Mark. We find Jesus today in a discussion with the Pharisees regarding true religion. The bottom line is that service of the lips is no good without the affection of the heart. True religion does not want us to be babies—it wants us to grow up. True religion wants us all to be sisters and brothers to each other, the world over, for we are all the children of God. Accept this word into yourselves and submit to it. Do what it tells you. There is no wiser wisdom. There is no freer freedom. There is no greater love. This has become so much clearer to me as I have discovered God’s working through St. Paul, the early Christians, and each of His children during this trip. I have experienced this in the ancient ruins of Greece and Turkey. I have discovered this in all the beautiful people of these lands who are all seeking the same thing we seek—THE TRUTH! The good news is we already know what this TRUTH is. It is the TRUTH that God loves each of us: the rich and the poor, the strong and the weak, the free and the enslaved. There is no distinction in God's love. Let us embrace this love and share it with each other and the whole world. As I witnessed the many ancient ruins and the beautiful tributes to God in enormous churches and basilicas throughout Greece and Turkey, I couldn't help but wonder and marvel at the sacrifices that the early Christians were willing to make for the honor and glory of God. Can we do any less than the early Christians who have come before us? I think not! I remember reminding each of you of the sacrifices that our founding parishioners made to provide us with such wonderful facilities over the past 61 years. This was done only through an attitude of trust in God and faith in the Mission of our parish community as it has grown and expanded over the years. Please, as we move forward with our Living Our Faith, Building Our Future Campaign, remember that it takes more than just the desire and wish to accomplish our goal to build our new parish center. It takes the affection of our hearts and a willingness to sacrifice for the good of the larger community. I continue to thank God and those who have made the sacrifice and commitment to this very important project and ask that the Holy Spirit moves those who have not yet committed to this project to do so. With God and each other, we can accomplish this goal for the honor and glory of the God who has given us all we have. Please know, once again, that I love and miss you all. Please pray for me as I continue my journey in the footsteps of St. Paul and then to the Holy Land where Jesus was born, grew, worked, walked, preached, suffered, died, and rose again for EACH of US! May we accept this love into our own lives and become instruments of this love in all we do and to all we meet. May God Bless Each of You Abundantly in His Love, Father Bob ~ Pastor

  • CATEGORICAL IMPERATIVES by Fr. Ron Rolhesier There's a well-known axiom that I will phrase more delicately than its usual expression. It goes this way: Every time you tell yourself that you should do something, you pay a bad price. The insinuation is that we are forever mistaking the voice of neurosis for the voice of conscience and putting ourselves under false obligations that rob us of both of freedom and maturity. Is that true? Yes and no. The axiom sounds cleverer than it is. It says that there should not be any shoulds in our lives; but that statement is self-contradictory. Still it needs to be given its due. There's wisdom in its instinct, even if it is expressed with the subtlety of a sledgehammer. It has this positive challenge: Many times when we feel a nagging obligation inside ("I must do this! I should do that!") the imperative is not coming from God or truth but from some other voice that is being falsely heard as the voice of God. Put more technically, most of the voices we hear inside that demand that we do something are psychological and emotional rather than moral or religious. They don't tell us what's right or wrong, or what God wants of us, they only tell us how we feel about certain things. For example: a feeling of guilt does not indicate that we did something wrong, it only tells how we feel about what we did, and that feeling can be healthy or unhealthy. Perhaps we didn't do anything wrong at all, but are only wounded and neurotic. Sorrow and contrition are better indicators of morality than any feeling of guilt. So where do these feelings of obligation and guilt come from? They come from nature and nurture, from genetics and socialization, from our unconscious and from our wounds. Freudians, Jungians, and Hillmanians offer different explanations, but they all agree on the main thing, that is, many of the voices inside of us that speak of right and wrong and demand that we do this or that are not moral or religious voices at all. They may well have important things to teach us but, if we take them as the voice of God and morality, we will end up acting out of something other than God and conscience. Many of the 'shoulds' we feel inside of us are not the voice of conscience at all. But, with that being said, some important qualifications need to be added: Simply put, sometimes the voice of obligation that we feel inside is profoundly moral and religious, God's voice. False voices speak inside but so too do true ones. C.S. Lewis, for example, in describing his own conversion, shares how he didn't

want to become a Christian but something inside of him told him that he had to become one. Despite being "the most reluctant convert in the history of Christendom", at a point in his life, he came to realize "that God's compulsion" was his liberation. He became a Christian because, paradoxically, in a moment of genuine freedom, he came to know he had no other choice existentially except to surrender himself to something, God's compulsion, which presented itself to him as an obligation. "God's compulsion" is precisely a deep and authentic 'should' inside us, and the great paradox is that when we submit to it we become freer and more mature. It's also what brings joy into our lives. It's no accident that the book in which Lewis describes this experience is called, Surprised by Joy. There's a great paradox at the heart of life that's hard to accept, namely, that freedom lies in obedience, maturity lies in surrender, and joy lies in accepting duty and obligation. Jesus clearly taught and embodied this paradox: He was the freest human person to ever walk this planet, yet he insisted constantly that he did nothing on his own, that everything he did was in obedience to his Father. He was the paradigm of human maturity, even as his life was one within which he habitually surrendered his own will. And he was free of all false religion, false morality, and false guilt, even as he constantly drew upon moral and religious imperatives deep inside of his own soul and inside of his own religious tradition. Simone Weil, that extraordinary philosopher and mystic who guarded her freedom so deeply that, despite her belief in the truth of Christ, she resisted baptism because she wasn't sure that the visible church on earth merited this kind of trust, was, despite fierce instinctual resistance, clear that what she ultimately wanted and needed was to be obedient. We spend our whole lives, she once stated, searching for someone or something to be obedient to because unless we give ourselves over in obedience to something greater than ourselves, we inflate and grow silly - even to ourselves. She's right. We need to stop obeying false voices inside of us. Neurosis is not to be confused with conscience. But, that being admitted, there are some 'shoulds" that we should do!

REFLECTIONS FROM OUR SOLSBERRY, IN MISSION TRIP For one week this summer, I participated in the St. Cletus Youth Ministry Mission Trip to Solsberry Hill, Indiana. While there, I volunteered at a day care center, Habitat for Humanity, a thrift store, and a crisis pregnancy center. The pregnancy center was the most gratifying, because I was able to work directly with the women and children who were in deepest need. In doing so, I realized how blessed I am. • FOOD PANTRY UPDATE…Here are three ways you can continue to help support the Food Pantry: (1) Make it routine to pick up an item or two for the Food Pantry when you go to the grocery store. Items are flying off the shelves as our volunteers pack the 250+ bags we will need for our next monthly distribution! Choose from our list of most needed items, which, at this time, includes tuna, oatmeal, cereal, boxed sides, canned meat, snacks, and coffee. Remember, all in date non-perishables are greatly appreciated! Then, drop off the items in the Church vestibule in the designated food bins located in the Madonna della Strada shrine area, when you come to weekend Mass or daily, from 7:45 AM – 4:00 PM. (2) Make a monetary donation to the Food Pantry. You can drop an envelope marked “Food Pantry” in the Sunday collection or at the rectory. These funds are used to purchase items needed to balance the assortment of staples and extras included in our pre-packed family bags. (3) Volunteer to work at the Greater Chicago Food Depository. On the fourth Wednesday of each month, we send a group of 10-15 volunteers to earn credit for us. At these sessions, we earn $15.00 worth of food per volunteer. Please check your calendar to see if you might be able to join our volunteer team on one or more of these evenings. A few things you should know:

    • Volunteers need to be 14-years-old to volunteer at the Food Depository during regular ses sions. • GCFD is located at 4100 W. Ann Lurie Place, Chicago, IL 60632, which is a few blocks from I-55 and Pulaski. • If you are interested, please contact Jerry Mitchell, who coordinates the St. Cletus volunteers: [email protected] or (630) 849-5857 (Jerry's cell). • If you volunteer at the Food Depository on your own, please designate the St. Cletus Food Pantry as the recipient of your volunteer credits. Our Agency Code is A01336.

Again, thank you for your overwhelming generosity.

INTERFAITH COMMUNITY PARTNERS…Providing transportation and support for independent living. Here’s an easy and tasty way to support the work of Interfaith Community Partners: Eat Italian on the first Thursday of each month. Alex and Aldo’s, located at 720 East 31st Street, La Grange Park, (708) 354-1390, donates 10% of their proceeds on this day to ICP. This includes take-out, delivery, or dining in their small cozy establishment. So this Thursday, September 6, eat well and support a great cause! SOCIAL CONCERNS Labor Day is traditionally the day to honor workers in the US and more recently to mark the end of summer. I think it is a most fitting time to celebrate those workers in our Social Concerns Ministry, who dedicate so many volunteer hours to “labor” for God’s kingdom all year long, even during the long, hot summer (think Rummage Sale or Summer Food Pantry set-up and distribution). So hats off to you…whether you serve on the Social Concerns Commission or PPC, volunteer your service for the Food Pantry, the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Giving Tree, the Employment Ministry, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Interfaith Community Partners, Respect Life, Mission Ladies, Adult Service Projects, other special outreaches, or provide fruits of your ”labor” by offering financial support, food for our Pantry, or gifts for our Advent outreach. A sincere thanks for being models of faith in action! And may you have a safe and enjoyable Labor Day weekend! Cont:

  • ARISE CHICAGO & CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING “Catholic social teaching is a central and essential element of our faith. Its roots are in the Hebrew prophets who announced God’s special love for the poor and called God’s people to a covenant of love and justice. It is a teaching founded on the life and words of Jesus Christ…”) One of the seven themes in Catholic social teaching concerns “The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers: The economy must serve people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living; it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. If the dignity of work is to be protected, then the basic rights of workers must be respected—the right to productive work, to decent and fair wages, to the organization and joining of unions, to private property, and to economic initiative.” (Visit the website of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, www.usccb.org and search for “Catholic Social Teachings” to educate yourself about the complete Social Teachings of the Catholic Church.) ARISE CHICAGO, an interfaith workers’ rights non-profit organization, bases its work on what Scripture tells us: that we are all created in the image of God and therefore are deserving of dignity and respect, including in the workplace. Most of us probably have a dignified workplace, but many workers do not. Did you know that, according to a UIC study, in Cook County, in just one week, $7.3 million dollars is stolen in wages, mostly from immigrant workers? Think about that for a minute. $7.3 million in one week! This happens when workers are not paid the proper minimum wage or forced to work off the clock, and in a myriad of other ways. Arise Chicago is working to help workers to get fair wages and proper working conditions. The insert in today’s Canticle will provide you with information about one such group of workers, as well as give you an opportunity to join Arise in their efforts. You can also visit their website, www.arisechicago.org for more about their efforts on behalf of workers. For now, please lift up workers in prayer over this Labor Day weekend, as together we seek a fuller measure of God’s justice in the workplaces around us. Thank you. Mary Beth Ford Director of Social Concerns

  • EARLY CHILDHOOD RELIGIOUS EDUCATION

This program is for children ages 3-5. Classes meet during the 9:30 a.m. Mass on most Sundays throughout the school year. There is still room available for all classes. This fun-filled class provides the children a time to be with others their own age and learn of the gospel in a way that is age appropriate. Please contact Mary Ellen Staelgraeve (708) 352-7693 for more information/registration form.

JESUS INVITES YOU TO BE HIS DISCIPLE The new school year has just begun and St. Cletus has adopted the theme for the year of: “Character Counts: Disciples Called to Witness.” It is a fitting reminder that we are all called to witness to our faith through our actions. For all of us, (child or adult), modeling is what impacts us. St. Francis said: “Preach the Gospel always. Sometimes use words.” The Lord wants you to know him better, understand and share his message, and to follow his way of life by serving one another. What a wonderful opportunity to do all of the above by being a minister of the Word or a minister of the Eucharist. What a positive way to accept the Lord’s invitation to serve the community at the table. When we gather for a dinner, don’t we all offer to help? Could we do the same at the Eucharistic meal? Please consider the invitation. Lector training: Thursday, September 6, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Eucharistic Minister training: Thursday, September 6, from 7:30-8:15 p.m. Any current minister who would like to be a Service Minister, please call Paulette Bolton (708) 215-5415. Schedules are flexible based on your availability. Please call the rectory (708-352-6209) if you would like to participate.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATION There is still time to register your children for Religious Education for the 2012-13 year. Make sure that your child has the opportunity to share in learning about our loving God. Further information is available on-line or by calling the office at (708) 352-2383. A reminder: Students anticipating celebrating their First Communion (second grade) or Confirmation (8th grade) need to be in the program for 2 years prior to the reception of the sacrament – (1st & 2nd grades and 7th & 8th grades). If you are new to the program, a copy of your child’s baptismal certificate is needed. We are eager to welcome you.

    CATECHISTS STILL NEEDED!

T hanks to all who have responded to the call for catechists. Your response is greatly appreciated. We still have a couple of spots to fill in order to serve our children. Gd. 2 - 1 catechist - Sunday 9:15 - 10:45 a.m. Gd. 4 - 1 catechist - Sunday 9:15 - 10:45 a.m.

Team-teaching is a possibility. You could alternate dates with a partner. Please call (708) 352-2383 if you are interested. Thank you.. Paulette Bolton,

    Director of Parish Catechesis/Formation

CATHOLICISM SERIES TO BE SHOWN THIS FALL The CREDO Committee is pleased to present the acclaimed Catholicism series by Fr. Robert Barron on Monday nights in the Fall, beginning on September 10, 2012. The series will run for ten sessions every Monday night except for Columbus Day when the school will be closed. We have a new start time: 7:30 p.m. We hope this will allow Monday night Religious Education teachers to join us. There is no homework for the series - and each episode stands alone, rather than building on the previous one. Feel free to attend just a few sessions - or join us for them all! Each episode lasts about 50 minutes. After each episode we will have small group discussions for those who wish to stay, but the discussion is optional. Here is a list of the episodes: 1. Amazed and Afraid: The Revelation of God Become Man 2. Happy Are We: The Teachings of Jesus 3. The Ineffable Mystery of God: That Than Which Nothing Greater Can Be Thought 4. Our Tainted Nature’s Solitary Boast: Mary the Mother of God 5. The Indispensable Men: Peter, Paul and the Missionary Adventure 6. A Body Both Suffering and Glorious: The Mystical Union of Christ and the Church 7. Word Made Flesh, True Bread of Heaven. The Mystery of the Church’s Sacraments and Worship 8. A Vast Company of Witnesses: The Communion of Saints 9. The Fire of His Love: Prayer and the Life of the Spirit 10. World Without End: The Last Things Fr. Barron’s website, The Word on Fire http://www.wordonfire.org/, says “Recently, Pope Benedict IVI declared a “Year of Faith” which will begin in October 2012. This year, he hopes, will provide a new impetus to the mission of the whole Church to lead men out of the desert in which they often find themselves, to the place of life, of friendship with Christ.” Watching the Catholicism series will be a way to gain knowledge of the Church and deepen your relationship with Christ.” There is a study book for the class: It can be found at http://store.wordonfire.org/product-p/wf-69.htm. You do not need to buy the book to attend the class, but you may find it helpful in your personal study. If you want the book, please do go ahead and order it yourself. There is no charge to attend the class, nor will there be a formal registration. The CREDO Committee thanks the Holy Name Society for generously donating the DVD’s for the class. We hope you can join us for this outstanding presentation on Catholicism. We will meet in the Kindergarten Room of the Education Building. Please enter at the flagpole entrance.
