In Jesus and Mary,
Father Jeff Kegley Pastor
Jesus is Lord!
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Pentecost, the completion of the Paschal Mystery. Most of our people will attend Mass this weekend at our in-car parking lot Mass, a very different experience of Pentecost, but a reminder that the power of the Holy Spirit, does not reside in a church building, but in each one of us, the people of God, wherever, we are. We are temples of the Holy Spirit. Where we are, there is the Holy Spirit.
The chorus of one of my favorite hymns for Pentecost goes like this: Come Holy Spirit, dark is the hour, we need Your filling, Your love and Your mighty power! Move now among us, stir us we pray, Come Holy Spirit, revive your Church today! This is a hymn written 45 years ago, yet we can all agree, we need a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit on our world, our country, our church, our families, more now than ever! We need a new outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we need a New Pentecost!
During the Novena to the Holy Spirit these nine days, we have been praying the same sentiment captured in a prayer for the Church by Pope St. John Paul II on the eve of Pentecost 1998: “what took place in Jerusalem over two thousand years ago,”… be renewed again; As the Apostles then, we too find ourselves gathered in a large cenacle of Pentecost, longing for the outpouring of the Spirit …Today, from this upper room…, a great prayer rises: Come, Holy Spirit, come and renew the face of the earth! Come with your seven gifts, Spirit of Life; Come, Spirit of Communion and Love! The Church and the world need you. Come, Holy Spirit, and make ever more fruitful the charisms you have bestowed on us.”
Pope St. John XXIII opened the Second Vatican Council with this prayer: “O Divine Spirit, renew your wonders in this our day as by a new Pentecost.” Every pope from Pope John XXIII to Pope Francis has prayed this prayer in one form or another. Yet, we find ourselves with only 17% of the faithful going to Mass, shortage of vocations, little efforts in evangelization – announcing the Good News by our people, resulting in the consolation and closing of parishes. Where is the New Pentecost?
I believe our current Holy Father, Pope Francis has identified the cause of our problem when he recently said, “the Holy Spirit cannot enter a heart that is closed.” Ask yourself, is your heart open to the Holy Spirit? Pope Francis has repeatedly challenged the faithful to be docile to the Holy Spirit, not to be afraid of the Holy Spirit, to pray to the Holy Spirit, to experience a personal encounter with the Holy Spirit! The world, our country, our church, our families will experience a New Pentecost when we allow the Holy Spirit to transform us. It begins in our heart. Let us all sincerely pray from our heart this Pentecost: “Come, Holy Spirit!”

Pope Francis: the Holy Spirit illuminates our steps
Pope Francis prayed the Regina Caeli on Sunday and addressed the faithful, linked via live-streaming, to the Vatican’s Apostolic Library, encouraging them to live the Gospel with joy in the knowledge they are sustained by the Holy Spirit who lights the way. Taking his cue from the Gospel passage of the day (Jn 14:15-21), the Pope said it presents two fundamental messages: the observance of the commandments and the promise of the Holy Spirit. In his words to the disciples, he said, Jesus links love for Him to the observance of the commandments, something he had insisted upon in His farewell discourse at the Last Supper when He said: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments”. And further, “Whoever has my commandments and observes them is the one who loves me”. The Pope explained that with these words Jesus asks us to love Him, and “demands the willingness to follow His way, that is, the will of the Father.” This, he continued, is summarized in the commandment of reciprocal love, given by Jesus Himself: “I give you a new commandment: love one another. As I have loved you, so you also should love one another”. Jesus’ love is gratuitous Jesus, he underscored, did not say “Love me as I have loved you”, but “love one another as I have loved you”. “He loves us without asking us to do the same in return, and He wants this gratuitous love of His to become the concrete form of life among us: this is His will,” he said. Pope Francis then explained that to help the disciples walk this path, Jesus promised He would pray to the Father to send “another Paraclete”; that is, a consoler, a defender, to accompany them and give them “the intelligence to listen and the courage to observe His words.” The Holy Spirit: God’s gift “This is the Holy Spirit,” he said, the Gift of God’s love that descends into the heart of the Christian. That’s why, he said, after Jesus died and rose again, His love is given to those who believe in Him and are baptized “in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” It is the Spirit, he said, who guides us, enlightens, us strengthens us so that we may go forward in life even “through adversity and difficulty, joys and sorrows, remaining on the path of Jesus.” This, he continued, is possible if we remain docile to the Holy Spirit, so that, through His presence at work in us, He may console and transform our hearts, opening them to truth and love. The Spirit illuminates our steps The Pope said that at some time in our lives we are all faced with the experience of error and sin, and it is the Holy Spirit who helps us not to succumb, and enables us to grasp and live fully the meaning of Jesus's words: “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” The commandments, he added, are not given to us as a kind of mirror in which to see the reflection of our miseries and inconsistencies: “No, the Word of God is given to us as the Word of life, which transforms, which renews, which does not judge to condemn, but heals and has forgiveness as its end. A Word that is light for our steps.” Pope Francis concluded that through this Gift, God helps us to be free people, “people who want and know how to love, people who have understood that life is a mission to proclaim the wonders that the Lord accomplishes in those who trust Him.” “May the Virgin Mary, model of the Church, who knows how to listen to the Word of God and to welcome the gift of the Holy Spirit,” he prayed, “help us to live the Gospel with joy, knowing that we are sustained by the Spirit, the divine fire that warms our hearts and illuminates our steps.

did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.’ “ Matt 25:40
We’d like to offer a word of thanks to our faithful benefactors who have
continued to support our ministry during this pandemic. This is, and has
been a challenging time for all of us, but most especially for our
neighbors who struggle financially on a regular basis and/or who are now struggling due to the
loss of income as a result of the quarantine. We need the support of our parish family to help
those in need. Your donation, no matter the amount, helps to improve the lives of others,
something we are all called to do as Catholic Christians.
We hope you will prayerfully consider making a donation. Checks, made payable to St. Vincent
de Paul of St Mary’s, can be mailed to our attention at the parish office. If you’d prefer to make
a cash donation, and until we can gather for Mass in the church, the poor box has been moved
from the narthex to the entrance of the parish offices. Donations of non-perishable food, paper
goods, cleaning supplies or personal items can be placed in the bin located in the vestibule of the
church.
We ask that you continue to support our ministry, both financially and in prayer. We in turn are praying for you, our generous benefactors. We thank you and God bless you.
Please Help!
Like so many families, Saint Mary, Mother of God Church is facing a
serious financial setback because of the Coronavirus pandemic. With no
public Masses, there are no collections, which means no income for weeks.
We depend on your sacrificial offerings in the weekly collections for: Saint
Mary School, parish programs and ministries, employee salaries and
benefits, Church mortgage, utilities and insurance, etc.
We need your help during this crisis. Please prayerfully consider continuing
your financial support by in one of the following ways:
1. Electronic giving: Visit the parish webpage
at stmarychurchnj.org/give to make your donation.
2. Go Fund Me Page (new): Contribute to “Forever St
Mary” at Forever.stmarychurchnj.org
3. Drop off at Parish Office: A secure white mail box is at the door of
the parish office where parishioners can “drop off” their church envelopes.
4. Mail Donations: Saint Mary Church, 19 Cherry Tree Farm Road,
Middletown, N.J. 07748
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Dear Parishioners,
Parish Giving is the premier electronic on-line giving and payment system for church
communities throughout the nation. Parish Giving is a safe, secure and easy way to make on-line
parish and church related donations and payments.
One major advantage of electronic giving is that it normalizes offertory collection in order to
properly budget for our parish. If you are on vacation, work or visiting family and friends and
are not able to worship with our parish community on Sunday, Parish Giving enables you to
continue the needed financially support for our mission and ministry here at Saint Mary’s.
Because of this stability in offertory collections, parishes who encourage parishioners to use
electronic giving see a 25% increase in weekly collections. We certainly need that at Saint
Mary’s.
So I would like to encourage you to sign up for Parish Giving. To do so, please visit our webpage
at www.stmarychurchnj.org and click the “Parish Giving” button on the top right of the page.
This will bring you to the Parish Giving page for Saint Mary’s. It is very easy to sign up. If you
have any questions about Parish Giving, please feel free to call the parish office.
Thank you for your consideration and thank you for all your financial support to our parish
community of Saint Mary’s. As I keep saying, “we are blessed!”
In Jesus and Mary,
Father Jeff Kegley
Pastor

State of Our Parish - Adopting a Pew
Our weekly collections are not sufficient to cover expenses nor were they used to pay for completed repairs. We are
offering parishioners an opportunity to ADOPT a PEW to pay for these extraordinary repairs. The pew will be in either
Mary, Mother of God Church or in the Chapel. You will have the option of choosing the pew and its location. The cost is
$1,000. You may pay by installments and upon completion of the payment plan, the plate will be mounted on both ends of
the pew. Thank you for your generosity. God Bless You, Hank Pekarsky - Business Manager
