Todays Readings

First Reading: Job 7:1-4, 6-7 In this passage, Job laments the drudgery and pain all people sometimes experience in life. He talks of troubled days and restless nights. But he does mention that the days move along swiftly, which can remind us that our time here on earth is quite limited and should be well spent. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23 Paul explains to the Corinthians that he has no choice, but must preach the gospel. He tells of making himself all things to all people, in order to save some of them. He reminds them that he does this willingly, in the hope of sharing in the blessings of the gospel. Gospel: Mark 1:29-39 Jesus cured Simon and Andrew’s mother of a fever, then others with illnesses or demons came to see him. He cured those who were ill, and cast out the demons of the others. Then he went off and prayed alone until his followers sought him out. Jesus and his disciples then moved on to other villages to proclaim the good news.

A note from the Mifflin Food Ministry: Dear St. John’s parish families: Thank you for your very generous giving in various ways to the Mifflin Community Food Ministry in 2017. This fall we celebrated 15 years of assisting the families in need in the Mifflin area. We are grateful for your part in making this possible. We served nearly 100 families in November and then in December as we made available holiday meal ingredients in addition to other food items. The Mifflin Community Food Ministry is not affiliated with the Greater Berks Food Bank, therefore, we are especially grateful for any gift. We use all gifts of time, money, food, paper products and other types of donations to serve God and their families in need in our area through this ministry. The Food Ministry is open the third Saturday of every month at Zion EC Church, 57 N. Church St., Mohnton, from 9-11 a.m.

Faith Sharing for Women Come join a small group of women from our family of faith at Faith Sharing for Women on Wednesday, February 7 at 7:30 pm in the Father Lyons Room. This month we will reflect on our compulsive doing and intense desire to meet our expectations of responsibility. Each session is complete itself, so first time and returning participants are most welcome. Attendance at previous sessions is not required. Bring a bible, a journal and pen, and a willingness to enter into sacred sharing with others. For more information contact Arlene Seeber: 484.794.8027 or [email protected].

KINGHTS at MASS The Knights of Columbus will be attending Mass as a group for one Mass each month. Prior to that Mass, the Knights will be saying the Rosary. There will

also be two Color Corps members that will act as an Honor Guard during Mass. Our next event will take place on Saturday; February 10th at the 4:00 Mass. The Rosary will start at 3:30. The Knights of Columbus invite all people of the Parish to join us in this endeavor. What a great way to prepare for the beginning of Lent by coming together to pray the Rosary and attend Mass together.

Saturday: February 10 – 3:30 Rosary / 4:00 Mass

May you and your family have a faith filled Lenten Season.

A WORD FROM OUR PARISH NURSES MINISTRY... A HEART ATTACK THAT STRIKES WITHOUT WARNING Women and blacks face a higher risk of death from heart attacks that present no symptoms. This has been shown in a new study by Dr. Edward C. Geehr, CEO of Lifescript. Myocardial lnfarction, also known as a heart attack, has classic symptoms of crushing chest pain, shortness of breath, sweating and lightheadedness. More subtle

presentations of a heart attack include indigestion, jaw pain or fatigue. But most people don’t know that as many as 45% of heart attacks have minor or no symptoms at all. These are known as a silent myocardial infarction or SMI. According to a study in the American Heart Association’s journal, silent heart attacks raise a person’s risk of dying from heart disease by 3 times, compared with persons without a heart attack. Also, women who suffer from SMI are more than twice as likely to die within the next decade. Please remember – call 911 if you are experiencing these symptoms. This goes for men too. Time is muscle. Early treatment will help save heart muscle. Happy and Healthy 2018.

The Beautiful Hands of a Priest

We need them in life's early morning, We need them again at it's close, We feel their warm clasp of true friendship, We seek them when tasting life's woes, At the altar, each day, we behold them, And the hands of a king on his throne Are not equal to them in their greatness; Their dignity stands all alone; And when we are tempted and wander, To pathways of shame and sin, It's the hand of a priest that will absolve us- Not once, but again and again. And when we are taking life's partner, Other hands may prepare us a feast, But the hand that will bless and unite us- Is the beautiful hand of a priest. God bless them and keep them all holy, For the Host which their fingers caress; When can a poor sinner do better, Than to ask Him to guide thee and bless? When the hour of death comes upon us, May our courage and strength be increased, By seeing raised over us in blessing The beautiful hands of a priest. - a poem shared by one of our Family of Faith members
