Justification—The Heart of the Reformation

Our forefathers in the faith put their lives on the line for the Gospel that is

proclaimed in God’s Word. We have heard of the martyrs of the early church, men and

women put to death in the Roman Empire because of their faith. In the 16th century, many

people died because of the Reformation. This should come as no surprise. When the truth

is preached, the world and false teachers get angry. While Jesus does indeed bring peace

between God and man, he also says in reference to Himself and the world, “I came not to

bring peace but a sword.” (Matthew 10) Jesus promised that His followers would suffer

persecution and hatred.

Most Lutherans know that Martin Luther personally put his life on the line in

defense of the faith, however, he certainly was not the only one. In some ways, it was just

as significant that a group of laymen, several princes and representatives of free cities in

Germany, also put their lives on the line for the sake of the Gospel. The Augsburg

Confession is the most basic statement of faith of the Lutheran Church besides the Small

Catechism. While written by a theologian and expressing the teachings of Luther and his

colleagues, it was presented by laymen committed to the truth of the Gospel.

The Augsburg Confession was presented to Charles V, emperor of the Holy

Roman Empire, in 1530. George of Brandenburg famously said to the emperor, “Before I

let anyone take from me the Word of God and ask me to deny my God, I will kneel and

let him strike off my head.”

I highly suggest getting a copy of this confession of faith, for it is yours also. It is a

brief, powerful summary of why the Lutheran Church teaches as it does. At the heart of

the Augsburg Confession stands Article 4: On Justification:

Also they teach that men cannot be justified before God by their own strength,

merits, or works, but are freely justified for Christ's sake, through faith, when they

believe that they are received into favor, and that their sins are forgiven for Christ's

sake, who, by His death, has made satisfaction for our sins. This faith God imputes

for righteousness in His sight. Rom. 3 and 4.

This is the article upon which the church stands or falls because the forgiveness of

sins by grace through faith for Christ’s sake alone is the very Gospel itself. To lose this or

deny this is to lose everything. May we be found as faithful as those bold confessors of

the Gospel at Augsburg.

In Christ,

Pastor Ramirez

The Ladies Guild

"By Love, Serve One Another" Gal.5:13

Greetings! A lot has happened here at St. Paul's since our last message in the newsletter. The "guild " does not have regular meetings in July and August, but that does not mean we haven't been working behind the scenes. We still have those extra tables for sale, please contact me, Lucky LaMeer, at 262-878-1947, or at [email protected]. We would like to dispose of them ASAP. We are all aware of the flooding and the damage of the floor and carpet in the fellowship hall. The flooring will be replaced and the Ladies Guild will assist financially. Our next meeting will be on Thursday, September 14th at 10am. We extend an invitation to ALL ladies of our congregation to join us. Please consider attending as we have many important items on the agenda and your input on the final decisions is very important. Out Fall Casserole Luncheon is scheduled for, Wednesday, October 25th. We need a co-chair. Donna Gerke served in this capacity for many years and due to her passing, we need to choose another lady, and so to speak " fill her shoes". We will also be discussing the LWML, and the future path it will take. We will have many other topics of discussion as well, PLEASE, consider attending if you are a member, and we are always looking for new members, so we can continue our mission here at St. Paul's.

Quilting Quips

100's, 100's, 100's, 100's, and 100's of fabric squares, pins, spools of thread, fillers, yards of backing, knotted ties, and hours of work will all come together into THOUSANDS of quilts for Lutheran World Relief filling a box car in Sturtevant in early October. A steady stream of pick-up trucks, vans and small trailers from church quilting groups all over Southeastern Wisconsin will converge at the railroad siding that morning to unload their warm, sturdy and beautiful quilts. How humbling it is for St. Paul's quilters to be part of this Good Samaritan effort. Would you be able to help St. Paul's quilters during the month of September as we begin our fall weekly sessions? We have everything needed---except manpower---to complete 10-12 quilts weekly for the October LWR collection. Give us a try---we will find a comfortable task for you. September 6, 13, 20, and 27 are the scheduled Wednesday morning sessions which begin at 8:45- 9:00 am. (We're flexible) Please call Wilma Baumgart (878-2527) or Marge Demuth (878-2530) with any questions, or if it appears that flooring installation in the Fellowship Hall might conflict with our scheduled session.
