FROM THE SAINTS The following sermon comes from Saint Augustine, Bishop and Doctor of the Church. Following a powerful conversion of heart to Christ, Augustine was baptized at 33 years of age. He later served as bishop of Hippo (within modern-day Algeria) from 396 until his death in 430. He devoted himself to preaching and writing in defense of the faith, becoming one of the most prolific writers in the history of Christianity. He is known as the Doctor of Grace. This sermon focuses specifically on the Ascension of the Lord, the Solemnity we celebrate today.
No one has ever ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven
Today our Lord Jesus Christ ascended into heaven; let our hearts ascend with him. Listen to the words of the Apostle: If you have risen with Christ, set your hearts on the things that are above where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God; seek the things that are above, not the things that are on earth. For just as he remained with us even after his ascension, so we too are already in heaven with him, even though what is promised us has not yet been fulfilled in our bodies.
Christ is now exalted above the heavens, but he still suffers on earth all the pain that we, the members of his body, have to bear. He showed this when he cried out from above: Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me? and when he said: I was hungry and you gave me food.
Why do we on earth not strive to find rest with him in heaven even now, through the faith, hope and love that unites us to him? While in heaven he is also with us; and we while on earth are with him. He is here with us by his divinity, his power and his love. We cannot be in heaven, as he is on earth, by divinity, but in him, we can be there by love.
He did not leave heaven when he came down to us; nor did he withdraw from us when he went up again into heaven. The fact that he was in heaven even while he was on earth is borne out by his own statement: No one has ever ascended into heaven except the one who descended from heaven, the Son of Man, who is in heaven.
These words are explained by our oneness with Christ, for he is our head and we are his body. No one ascended into heaven except Christ because we also are Christ: he is the Son of Man by his union with us, and we by our union with him are the sons of God. So the Apostle says: Just as the human body, which has many members, is a unity, because all the different members make one body, so is it also with Christ. He too has many members, but one body.
Out of compassion for us he descended from heaven, and although he ascended alone, we also ascend, because we are in him by grace. Thus, no one but Christ descended and no one but Christ ascended; not because there is no distinction between the head and the body, but because the body as a unity cannot be separated from the head.
BLESSING OF WHEELS Please join us after the 10:30 Mass next Sunday, May 20,
for our Blessing of Wheels. Bring your bikes, scooters,
skateboards, skates, strollers, and the like. After the
blessing, we’ll pray for the intercession of Mary, Our Lady
of Ghisallo, the patroness of cyclists. If you choose to roll
to Mass that morning, we’ll provide free parking inside.
MOTHER’S DAY! Please join me thanking the Lord for the gift he gives us
through our mothers and all of the women who have said
‘yes’ to life. I am moved with awe for the heroic efforts
these women make to nurture, love, guide, encourage,
restrain, protect, and otherwise care for the rest of us. I
pray that they may be helped and strengthened though
the intercession of Mary, the Mother of God, the Mother
of the Church, and our Mother.

A NEW CHURCH DIRECTORY Dear Parishioners, you are invited to be a part of our new photo directory. Our last directory was printed in 2010. As you look around you today, you will see that we have new families, there have been weddings and babies, and that kids have become young adults. We’re changing, and a new photo directory will help us capture these changes.
In June, Lifetouch Church Directories will be at Good Shepherd Church to take pictures. Each family photographed will receive a free 8 x 10 portrait & free directory. Take a look at all the details, including how to sign up, in today’s bulletin. Our directory won’t be complete without you! Sign up today.
TWO CONVENIENT WAYS TO SIGN UP 1. Schedule an appointment online by visiting our site at
www.goodshepherdgv.org and clicking on Reserve Your Spot Today!
2. Call Renee at the Parish Office, 763-544-0416, x 810.
Please sign up ASAP to lock in your preferred date. Plan to be here for about one hour. The photography sessions are here at Good Shepherd in Social Hall C on: June 12, 13, 14, 15, 19, 20, 21, 22 - from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m.
June 16 & 23 - from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.
If you would like to help be a host/hostess at the sessions, please contact Renee, [email protected]
PRISM DRIVE The May PRISM Supply Drive is scheduled for the weekend of May 19/20. The May items needed are: Hygiene Products (soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, tooth paste, lotions etc.)
DONUT SUNDAY Please join the Home & School Association for donuts and coffee following the Sunday masses next week.
NEEDED: VOTIVE CANDLE REPLENISHMENT We need someone to replenish the votive candles before
the 8:30 mass on the 3rd Sunday of the month. The
time commitment is about 15 minutes. If this is the mass
you attend, please consider this opportunity to support
Good Shepherd. This activity can be done as an individual or as a family. Please contact Mary Ann Tellers at 952-544-
6907 or email her at [email protected]. Thank you for
your consideration.
Reminder: Please make the front pews available if someone approaches who may have difficulty walking up to communion during the liturgy. The ability to sit in the front pews does makes it easier for an extraordinary min-ister of Holy Communion to come to them.
ARCHDIOCESAN MARRIAGE DAY CELEBRATION Bishop Andrew Cozzens invites you to celebrate the beau-tiful mystery of the mutual self-gift between a man and woman in the Sacrament of Matrimony on Saturday, June 2 at the Cathedral of Saint Paul, 10 a.m. for Mass, renewal of vows, and a short reception. Couples celebrating silver, golden and platinum anniversaries will be honored in a special way and are invited to attend. Families and friends of all couples are welcome! Couples married one or more years may request a commemorative certificate signed by Archbishop Bernard Hebda. To request a certificate, please contact Sonya Flomo at the Office of Marriage, Family & Life at 651-291-4488 or [email protected].
MOTHER’S DAY ROSE SALE The Respect Life Committee will be selling beautiful long stemmed roses ($2 each) after the Masses this weekend. So plan to honor your mom, wife, grandma, sister, daughter, or yourself with the gift of a gorgeous rose or multiple flowers because it is a good way to raise money for a great cause!
KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS On May 5th and 6th, the Good Shepherd Council of the Knights of Columbus passed out Tootsie Rolls and collected money for People with Intellectual Disabilities. Thank you to all who gave and all who helped. Thanks to Cub Foods in the West End for allowing us to collect at the store on Saturday, April 28, 2018.
MEN’S MONDAY NIGHT BASKETBALL After a short period of restructure and refreshment, men’s basketball is returning. Good Shepherd adult men’s organized basketball is dedicated to promising a competitive flair with Christian fellowship. To gain further information on eligibility, participation guidelines and sign up, contact the parish office at 763-544-0416, ext. 810. Play will begin this Monday starting at 8:30 p.m.
PENTECOST IS COMING! The weekend of May 19-20, 2018 is the Feast of Pentecost, the celebration of the descent of the Holy Spirit to form the Church. Good Shepherd again encourages parishioners to wear something red for the liturgy, indicating the fact that we all share in the gifts of the Holy Spirit as members of the body of Christ. We decorate the Church of Christ in his Spirit. In past years the amount of red in the pews has been impressive.
WEDDING BANNS
Please pray for these couples who will soon be married in our church.
