Page 2 St. Scholastica

My dear friends in Christ, Greetings of Peace and Joy of our Lord. On this 5th Sunday of Ordinary time, Our Lord is asking us to show concern to others especially the less fortunate ones. Try to do an act of Charity in the days ahead. This week is special to us as we celebrate the feast of St.Scholastica our Patroness on Feb 10, 2014. She is the twin sister of St. Benedict, born in 480 AD at Nursia, Italy and died on Feb 10, 542 AD at Monte Cassino, Italy. She dedicated her life to God as a Benedictine Nun. It is worth reminiscing the famous story of the twins visiting each other: Once a year St. Benedict would visit his sister St. Scholastica in the guest house of the monastery for a day and return to the monastery by the end of the day. In the last year of St. Scholastica's life the twins were visiting each other as usual for a day. When it was evening St. Benedict wanted to return to the monastery, but his Sister wanted him to remain with her the rest of the night so that they could spend time together praising God. But Benedict was adamant that he should return to the monastery. St. Scholastica prayed and immediately there was such a big storm that Benedict could not come out of the guest house. "What have you done?" questioned Benedict. " Well, I asked you for a favor but you refused and so I asked God for a favor and he granted it" replied Scholastica. Feb 11th is the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes. Pope John Paul II designated this day as the world day of the Sick. Let us be God's instruments of healing in this world. I will be traveling to India to visit family on Feb 10, 2014 and will return to our Parish on March1,2014 to resume my duties. Smile, God loves you and so does our Blessed Mother Mary. Fr. Robert G. Romaine Your Pastor

TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — If you share your food with the hungry, provide housing for the homeless, then light shall break forth upon you (Isaiah 58:7-10). Psalm — The just man is a light in the darkness to the upright (Psalm 112). Second Reading — My message to you, says Paul, was not clever words of wisdom but the proclamation of Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 2:1-5). Gospel — You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. In your good deeds your light shines before others, leading them to glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). For the Safety of Soldiers Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. Protect them with the shield of your strength and keep them safe from all evil and harm. to the needs of others in Church.

All inquiries welcome, for more information, please call Deacon Terry or Hazel Knox at 352-628-6979.

St. Scholastica Council of Catholic Women

We know that not every Catholic woman who becomes a member can be an active member. We also know that many of our members cannot attend our meetings. As a member, it may be that, you attend one function per year to show your support or you may have the time to take an active part in the one project per year, and if so that is greatly appreciated. As a member of the Council of Catholic Women, you receive the grace of prayers that members all over the world say for one another. You become a link with one of the strongest women’s groups in the world, and the only Catholic lay women’s organization recognized by the Bishops. If you are a woman 18 years or older, please consider joining, you’ll be glad you did. For more information, call Henrietta at 527-0939. General Meeting every 3rd Monday of the Month.

Acts of the Apostles is the story of the early Church and very first Christians after the Ascension? Did you know? The Evening Bible Study group will be starting a new series on the Acts of the Apostles on Mondays, at 6:30 pm in the Parish Center. Come join us to learn more about how we got started and why we are here. Call Sherri Turner,

Faith Formation Calendar :

February 9: All Classes in Session February 16 NO Faith Formation Classes February 22 : Confirmation Retreat at Bethany Center February 23: All Classes in Session

Each year our parish and every parish

and mission in our Diocese is responsible

for a portion of the financial obligation it

takes to meet the ministry, programs and

services of our Catholic Church.

Together, we are able to reach so many

more in need than our parish could ever

reach alone. By now you should have

received at your home, a

personal invitation from me,

Rev. Robert Romaine to

participate in the 2014 Annual

Pastoral Appeal, One Faith,

Guided in Prayer,

Strengthened in Service.

Please take the time to look

through the brochure at the good works of our local Church, the many people

that are served through this joining of resources and the amazing generosity

that has been shared. We should be very proud of what we can accomplish

together. Today I ask you, in partnership with myself, Bishop Lynch and all of

the parishes and missions within our diocese, to make a gift/pledge to this

Annual Pastoral Appeal, for the benefit of our parish and more importantly the

many in need throughout the five counties of our diocesan family. Every gift is

valuable. Sometimes it is hard to envision how your one gift could make a

difference in an organization the size of our diocese, but it does, each Catholic

family, each parish, TOGETHER, can fulfill the mission of our Church, to love

and serve one another. In trying times our gifts from God may be more difficult

to identify, God blesses each of us every day. No one can do everything, but

everyone can do something. Not equal gift but equal sacrifice. Thank you for

continuing to support our parish and our diocesan faith community so faithfully

and in so many ways.

Stewardship is the way God has expected His people to live since the
