This Week at St. Anne Don’t Be Foolish What is foolish? What is wise? Most of us could name an occasion or two in which we have done something foolish. We did not stop to consider the consequences of our actions and regretted them in the end. The sort of foolishness we are considering here, however, is more than simple impulsive behavior and has eternal consequences. To be foolish in the eyes of God is to ignore the ways in which we know we are called to behave—toward God, others, and ourselves. The five foolish bridesmaids did not fail in their duties through their actions, but rather through inaction. Like them, we may fail to be ready to meet our Lord, through inaction as much as through our actions. In these final weeks of the liturgical year, we are urged to take stock. How are we, or are we not, living as people whose faith directs our lives? Are we foolish through sinful action or inaction? Do we care for others and for ourselves, as we know we ought? Or do we act instead as though we have all the time in the world in which to embrace Christ’s way of mercy, forgiveness, justice, love, and peace? Do we fail to recognize that Christian discipleship is a way of life? Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co. Readings for the Week Monday: Wis 1:1-7; Ps 139:1b-10; Lk 17:1-6 Tuesday: Wis 2:23 — 3:9; Ps 34:2-3, 16-19; Lk 17:7-10 Wednesday: Wis 6:1-11; Ps 82:3-4, 6-7; Lk 17:11-19 Thursday: Wis 7:22b — 8:1; Ps 119:89-91, 130, 135, 175; Lk 17:20-25 Friday: Wis 13:1-9; Ps 19:2-5ab; Lk 17:26-37 Saturday: Wis 18:14-16; 19:6-9; Ps 105:2-3, 36-37, 42-43; Lk 18:1-8 Sunday: Prv 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31; Ps 128:1-5; 1 Thes 5:1-6; Mt 25:14-30 [14-15, 19-21]

When you Think of Christmas Gifts Think of SCRIP Beginning November 15 through December 20 our SCRIP ministers will be here on Wednesday evenings to accommodate your gift card needs. Please plan to keep them busy between 6:30 and 7:45 p.m. We have additional inventory of $10 cards for stocking stuffers and gifts. Please note: If you are purchasing more than ten $10 cards or more than six $25 cards please do a prepaid order by Sunday after sales and pick them up by the following Wednesday. This way we will be able to accommodate everyone’s purchase. “Preparation Matters” An excerpt from Blessed by Dynamic Catholic We prepare for everything important. You wouldn’t expect to win a big soccer tournament if you hadn’t been practicing. You cannot expect good grades if you don’t study for your exams. You wouldn’t go on a trip without packing and planning. Preparation is essential for a great experience. You are blessed to be Catholic. As Catholics we prepare for each of the Catholic Moments. We prepare for Christmas with the season of Advent. We prepare for Easter with the season of Lent. We prepare for Mass with prayer and fasting…” How do you prepare for the Sacrament of Reconciliation??? Here are some ideas: Attend a retreat By making an examination of conscience (When have

you not been the best version of yourself?) Read your Bible Read, write, reflect and discuss with your family a

book about Reconciliation from the table in the Gathering Area

Ask questions and learn more. Practice forgiveness. Be sorry. Pray! Today is the World Day of the Poor Pope Francis has called for the first World Day of the Poor for today, November 19—the 33rd Sunday of Ordinary Time. The theme of this first World Day of the Poor is “Let us love, not with words, but with deeds”—inspired by the First Letter of John (3:18). In his letter announcing this initiative, Pope Francis states:

We are called, then, to draw near to the poor, to encounter them, to meet their gaze, to embrace them and to let them feel the warmth of love that breaks through their solitude. Their outstretched hand is also an invitation to step out of our certainties and comforts, and to acknowledge the value of poverty in itself.

Pope Francis is inviting us to hear the cry of the poor, pray for them, reflect, and act. How will you spend your day?

Christmas Ministry The St. Anne's Christmas Ministry gift giving tree is filled with Christmas wishes. Please stop by, take a tag, and help spread Christmas Joy! Some tags may

contain a first name, and others may not; however be sure to know that each tag was created for a specific individual in our community, and they are counting on our support. We cannot stress enough the importance of returning the tag with the gift by the due date! Some tags are due next weekend, November 26! The due date is printed on the tag. If you lose your tag, or find that you are unable to purchase the gift, please let us know. Remember to shop with SCRIP, or when in doubt, a gift certificate from SCRIP is sure to please, especially for teens and adults. We are asking that you return the gift with an appropriate size gift bag to put the gift in for giving. We always welcome “extra” items, if you are a bargain shopper and have collected items throughout the year. We can always use gift bags, wrapping paper, tissue paper and tape. Sign up sheets are available for our holiday events. Hope you can join us for at least one event! If you have any questions, please contact Linda Strauss at 262-942-0807 or Shannon Walczak at 262-939-8833.

F or the past 8 weeks, Nicholas Mowry has been interning as a liturgical planner at St. Anne. Nicholas recently completed his Masters Degree from

Michigan State in Viola Performance and is faithfully seeking a vocation in music. For most, what goes into the liturgy is an unknown. That’s ok. I don’t have much interest in knowing about the inner workings at Google but I do love my smart phone. So it goes when we are blessed with a beautiful encounter with Jesus through the Word, the Eucharist and through heartfelt worship music. It has been an absolute pleasure to get to know Nicholas who is not only amazingly proficient at his instrument of choice (Viola) but is also very active in his faith. It isn’t unusual to see Nicholas on Tuesday nights at Eucharistic Adoration, then Wednesday nights at Cor Jesu in Milwaukee for adoration and Mass, and then back at Mass on the weekend. I’m very impressed with Nicholas’ prayerful approach to liturgy, spending hours in the Scriptures for the week and then dissecting and discerning which hymns would not only be appropriate but welcomed at Mass. At times, he’s been

able to challenge us as musicians and as a congregation to step out of our comfort zone. I was able to talk to Nicholas about this experience and his plans for the future. Rich: Nicholas, what did you think of the overall experience of planning liturgy? Nicholas: I found it to be eye-opening, for sure. It presented challenges such as balancing comfort in Catholic tradition and stretching the congregation with more contemporary worship all while working with the musicians’ strengths to inspire the congregation to listen to what the Father is trying to whisper to them, individually. Oh, and also remembering to find actually good music that fits the message of the Gospel. Rich: Has this experience changed your view on the Mass as a whole? Nicholas: The thing that stuck out to me the most, was just how much the choice of music can help elevate the Mass; it joins with the Scriptures and leads to a culmination at the Eucharistic table. It will help me to imitate Jesus in such a way that every Mass becomes a gift of myself back to the Father. Rich: What are your aspirations as a musician? Your choice in Degree really has committed you to a career in music hasn’t it? Nicholas: Yes, it has. As a musician, there are things I want to do, of course. These include primarily playing in a string quartet while also playing with the Milwaukee Symphony. But I also very much enjoy composition and would love to incorporate that into things as well. But there are also ideas I want to contribute. And whether in music or not, I really want to lead others to live a full life of joy and inspire them to be stewards of the gifts they've been given. Rich: What has been your favorite part of this internship, besides me? lol Nicholas: If I have to give an answer besides you, Rich, then so be it. You know, spending the extra time that I did with the Scriptures and praying through the music, was actually really healing. For as long as I can remember, I have never listened to music with lyrics because I don't (and couldn't) listen to them - the music was always my focus. But this experience forced me to really focus on them, and that was very healing. There have been many wounds in my life that needed healing that the Father was able to come into and clean out. It sounds overly dramatic, but the reality is that the music helped; I was able to pray with the music in ways that I never had before and it showed me the comforting love of the Father.
