LISTEN AND ACT
"If you wish, you can make it clean," a man cries out to Jesus. "If you wish, you can change my life," we cry out in prayer. "If you wish, you can change our lives," come the cries in the news and in our streets.
Throughout our daily life, we lift our needs and hopes to God, trusting in God's mercy. And if we take some time to reflect on the flow of our lives, we realize and rejoice that, like the man with leprosy, we have been changed and our lives have been shaped by our own encounters with Jesus. These changes bring us closer to Jesus; they also make us more like Jesus. God is shaping us individually and as a community, empowering us to be Christ in our world, acting in his name.
In today's celebration, we gather to lift our voices to God in praise and thanksgiving. We cry out to God, giving voice to the pleas of refugees and others seeking shelter, of prisoners seeking rehabilitation and freedom, of all the forgotten ones in our complicated world. And finally, we are sent forth with grateful hearts to stretch out a hand in response to the cries we hear. With God's grace, we will change the world.

THE GOSPEL OF LIFE @ 25: PART 3“More contraception? More abortions?”

Just over a quarter of a century ago, Pope S a i n t J o h n P a u l I I r e l e a s e d h i s encyclical, Evangelium vitae, in response to the ever-increasing attacks against human life and dignity. Each Friday, we aim to explore a different aspect the prophetic papal document.
Today’s passage drawn from Section 13 of the encyclical where Pope John Paul tackles the intrinsic link between the use of artificial contraception and abortion:
“Indeed, the pro-abortion culture is especially strong precisely where the Church's teaching on contraception is rejected... But despite their differences of nature and moral gravity, contraception and abortion are often closely connected, as fruits of the same tree,” Pope Saint John Paul II, Section 13, Evangelium vitae.
Reflecting upon this passage today is Jenny Ingles, Director of Fertility and Life Ministries for the Diocese of Lansing. Jenny writes:
“It's often times hard to accept that contraception and abortion are linked. After all, we're told that if women have access to contraception, then they won't have unplanned pregnancies and, thus, will not turn to abortion. The reality is vastly different though.”
“The underlying decision to reject life but still engage in life-producing activities is present in both contraception and abortion. A couple who uses contraception has already rejected the possibility of life so when the contraceptive fails to prevent a pregnancy, it is difficult, if not impossible, for many to suddenly accept this new life. This leads many to turn to abortion.”
“The other lie that is often perpetuated is that contraceptives are nearly ‘full-proof’. This is far from the truth. The average birth control pill fails to prevent pregnancy between eight and ten percent of the time. Considering how many women are using the birth control pill on a daily basis (often times in non-permanent relationships), the number of unplanned, unwanted pregnancies is astronomical.”
“This link between contraception and abortion is inseparable. And in order to truly end abortion in our country, it cannot be ignored.”

During this time of pandemic, the Vatican has modified the method of distributing the ashes:
The Priest says the prayer for blessing the ashes. He sprinkles the ashes with holy water, without saying anything. Then he addresses all those present and only once says the formula as it appears in the Roman Missal, applying it to all in general: "Repent, and believe in the Gospel", or "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return".
The Priest then cleanses his hands, puts on a face mask and distributes the ashes to those who come to him, or, if appropriate, he goes to those who are standing in their places. The priest takes the ashes and sprinkles them on the head of each one without saying anything.

WEEKEND & HOLY DAY MASS DISPENSATION EXTENDED
The obligation upon all Catholics to attend Sunday Mass and Holy Days remains suspended across the Diocese of Lansing through MAY 16, 2021.
Light of Christ Parish has prepared our churches and buildings to accommodate social distancing practices (and wearing face masks) for Daily and Weekend Masses as mandated by the State of Michigan and adhered to by the Diocese of Lansing.
As previously provided, the faithful are reminded that while the Sunday obligation to attend Mass is dispensed, all are nevertheless obligated to keep the Lord’s day holy (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 2168-2195). It is especially recommended to engage in prayer, either personally or as a family, for example, by devoutly following a broadcast of the Sunday Mass by television, internet, or radio. Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception, Patroness of the Diocese of Lansing, pray for us!
STATIONS OF THE CROSS
The Knights of Columbus will be doing the Way of the Cross by St. Alphonsus Liguori at 7:00pm on Fridays which includes a meditation and the response of the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be. The following schedule will be used:

SACRAMENTAL PREPARATION MEETING
Sun., February 21, 9:45am, Blissfield Hall
A First Reconciliation/First Communion Meeting will be held Sunday, February 21, from 9:45am-10:45am in the church hall in Blissfield. Parent(s) and their child(ren), (registered in our regular religious education program in 2nd grade and older) in need of preparation to receive these sacraments are invited to attend.
We'll pray together, discuss the program and its adaptations due to Covid-19, and distribute materials. Everyone will need to wear a face mask (some are available in church) and sit in the chairs already set up for social distanced seating. Please do not attend if you feel sick at all.
If you are uncomfortable attending with these precautions, you have the option of staying home. Online lessons will continue as we gradually return to meeting in person. If you have any questions, please contact Deanna Burke at [email protected]. or call the office at 517 447-3500.
