Notices for the Bulletin need to be received by Wednesday 12.00noon, at the latest.

Things happening in our Parish

Our Parish SVP is to meet Wed 2 Jul, 7.30pm, in our Sacred Heart Hall. To know more of their work or to join them, please have a word with any present Member.

Confirmations Baptised Catholic Children, who are now in school year 5 or above, but have not been Confirmed, are eligible to prepare for this very important Sacrament. Any Parents/Carers who wish to bring their Child/ren to prepare, but who missed the information meeting, need an application form and schedule of meetings from Fr Anthony, and to return the form to him by Sun 7 July, at latest. Details of first regular meeting on pg 3.

Please Note On account of the cost of testing to meet safety regulations, it is impractical for us to sell/raffle any mains electric goods at Parish Fetes, unless they are in their original, factory sealed boxes. So as not to confuse the nature of our Fetes, we also do not have a stall for second hand clothes, shoes or accessories.

Many Thanks to all who assisted with last Saturday’s International Mass: those who provided translations and/or read in the various languages; those who undertook assisting the music or the other usual ministries; those who helped organise the celebration; all who came along to pray with our Parish Family; and, too, all who provided the tasty array of inter-national/regional foods (yumyum). & In our Diocese

Fountains Abbey Annual Mass, Thu 11 Jul, 12.00nn. See notice board in our Church Entrances for details

Formation for Readers of the Word At Hinsley Hall, Headingley, Leeds, Sat 13 Jul, 10.00am-1.00pm, to look at the nature and meaning of Scripture, and how to best proclaim God’s Word at Mass. Details/booking: contact [email protected].

From Fr Anthony

The inner person grows as we are drawn more into the fullness of God. Our origin is a person. Our destiny is a person, not some Disneyland in the sky. We are to seek and find the fulfilment of our deepest yearnings in the loving embrace of God. St Augustine expresses it well. After years of fruitless searching for meaning and happiness in every possible avenue of experience, at last he finds the Lord and cries out,

‘O Beauty ever ancient, ever new, late have I known

thee, late have I loved thee.

You have made us for yourself, O

Lord, and our hearts are restless

till they rest in you.’

Finding God, we will find all else in him If we don’t find him, then nothing else can satisfy us. Julian of Norwich makes this prayer:

'God, of your goodness, give me yourself, for you are sufficient for me. I cannot properly ask anything less to be worthy of you. If I were to ask less, I should always be in want. In you alone do I have all.'

God is at the centre drawing us to him-self. Love is at the centre inviting us to trust. The heart of faith is at the heart. Despite our failures, sufferings, our dis-couragements, our deepest heart invites us to keep trust and to persevere on our pilgrimage home.

Long ago, in India, a very old man was on pilgrimage. The holy place of pilgrimage was situated high up in the mountains. It was winter and the weather was harsh. On his way up the mountain, the old pilgrim stopped at a wayside inn to rest. The innkeeper looked at the old man in wonder. The pilgrim was indeed very old and frail. The innkeeper spoke to him with concern and respect. ‘Old man, do you think you should continue your journey? The holy place is far, the mountain is steep and the weather is very harsh. You are old and frail, do you think you will make it to the shrine?’ The old pilgrim smiled and answered, ‘Well, it’s like this. You see, my heart is already at the shrine. So I think it will be easy for the rest of me to follow.’

But seriously

DO YOU KNOW? The Sacred Heart of Jesus is the particular devotion during June and it especially encourages reception of the Blessed Sacrament. July’s devotion is closely related, it being The Precious Blood of our Lord, with an obvious emphasis on Jesus shedding his Blood, in his sacrifice on the cross, and being given to us in the Sacrifice of our Mass And what are the devotions particularly

attached to August and September? AND SERIOUSLY! In the Glasgow University Union there was a notice asking for the names of those interested in playing football for

the University. The notice had three columns: Name, Address, Position. The first name to be appended was: John the Baptist; the Wilderness, Jordan; Desperate.

Acts of Contrition

The Deepest Roots of Penance: Cain’s Not Able

Consider Adam and Eve’s immediate descendants, their firstborn son, Cain. Cain, out of envy, commits the world’s first murder. No sooner does the murderer finish off his victim, his brother Abel, than God says to Cain: “Where is Abel your brother?” (Gen 4:9) Again, God is not seeking information. He does not need to be informed about Abel’s whereabouts. He is, rather, giving Cain an opportunity to confess his sin.

Cain, however, doesn’t take the Lord up on His offer. He lies instead. Where is his brother Abel? “I do not know,” Cain replies. “Am I my brothers keeper?” Once more, God does not accuse Cain, but invites him to con-fess, even presenting him with the evidence of his crime: “What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying to Me from the ground” (Gen 4:10) To the end of the episode, however, Cain remains unrepentant, his sin unconfessed. Rather than acknowledge that he has made a victim of Abel, Cain blames God for victimizing Cain! When he complains, “My punishment is greater that I can bear! (Gen 4:13), he isn’t just saying “Woe is me”; he’s saying “unjust are you” to God, his judge. Rather than confessing his own injustice, Cain ac-cuses God of injustice. He goes on, then, to castigate God for tak-ing away his joy and his means of making a living: “Behold, you have driven me this day from the ground; and from your face I shall be hidden” (Gen 4:14). Indeed, Cain goes so far as to accuse God of betraying him to a world full of murderers: “I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and whoever finds me will slay me” (Gen 4:14). It doesn’t take a psychiatrist to see what is going on here. Cain is assuming Abel’s victim status and projecting his own guilt on to God. “Now I can’t work. Now I can’t fellowship with You. Now I have to suffer injustice.” Moreover, he’s accusing the rest of hu-manity of murderous intent, when he himself is, so far, history’s on-ly murderer. Like his parents, Cain can muster a range of emo-tions—fear, shame, defensiveness, self-pity— but he won’t say he’s sorry. He refuses to acknowledge his sin.

Gospel: Matthew 16:13-19 This is one of the rare saints-days to displace the Sunday celebration of the Resurrection of the Lord, which shows its importance. In a way it is still a Feast of the Lord, for it is the feast of the Church. Peter is to be the Rock founda-tion of Jesus’ own people, and he has promised that he will be present in this Church, ‘where two or three are gathered together in my name’, So Christ is present even in an ordinary household trying to live together with Christ at their centre. Here Jesus makes the promise to Peter that what he binds on earth will be bound in heaven; his decision will hold firm in the eyes of God. Later Jesus makes the same promise to the community itself. So Peter is the spokesman for the Christian community, voicing the decisions of the Church. At his last meeting with his disci-ples the risen Christ promises to be with them ‘till the end of the ages’; the bishops, as the successors of the apos-tles, are the channels of Christ’s presence among us now. So today is the celebration of Christ among us, his people.

First Reading: Acts 12:1-11 This story is delightfully told: Peter is like a sleepy child, woken in the middle of the night. There are perhaps too many escapes from prison in the Book of Acts; Luke obvi-ously enjoys this kind of story, and so would his audience. However, such narratives demonstrate the special protec-tions which God exercises over the infant Church. Once James, the leader of the Jerusalem Church, had been executed, if Peter had gone too, the community would

have been dangerously bereft. The presence of the angel signifies this special protection and divine intervention to ensure the continuance of the Church. Peter has already been leading the Church (he has introduced the centurion Cornelius, the first gentile convert) and he still has to take a leading part at the council of Jerusalem, thereby ensur-ing the liberty of gentile Christians from observance of the full Jewish Law. After that Peter disappears from the sce-ne. The tradition is strong that he was martyred in Rome, but we do not know where his apostolic role took him. Paul tells us that, while he himself was entrusted with the mission to the gentiles. Peter was entrusted with the mis-sion to the Jews. The Jewish Christians were an important group among the first generations of Christians. Second Reading: 2 Timothy 4: 6-8. 17-18 The second Letter to Timothy was probably written in Paul’s name rather than being directly authored by him. As Paul frequently does, this passage uses the images of sport, so popular in the ancient world: the arena, the race track and the winner’s crown. Paul gives full expression to his consciousness of the Lord’s power to save, and also to his longing for the completion of his own life in the Lord, balanced, (as always) by his eagerness to do the Lord’s work in his mission here and now. This longing is at the heart of every Christian. Despite a human fear of death, we know that in the end we will be welcomed into the Lord’s embrace. The early Christians saw this ‘Appearing’ of the Lord in terms of a royal procession in the clouds, signalling the end of the world, but what we look forward to is not so much the dissolution of the universe but to a personal meeting with the Lord. This meeting will be awe-some and daunting because we will be brought face to face with ourselves and see ourselves as we truly are—including all those faults and failures which we refuse to admit even to ourselves, yet conscious of the overwhelm-ing comfort of forgiveness in the divine love.
