32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

“Look to the Heart”

In 1 Samuel, God advises the prophet

Samuel not to observe as men see but as

God sees. He tells him to "look to the heart."

This is the movement of this Sunday's Gospel

reading. "Beware the scribes," Jesus advises.

He points out their public greetings and

"seats of honor," which stands in sharp

contrast to their private greed. For the Jewish

people of Jesus' day, honor resides at the

top. Power and prestige created a high profile

back then as it still does today. After his

warning, Jesus turns his disciples' attention

elsewhere: a poor widow. "She, from her

poverty, has contributed all she had." While

the scribes donated large sums to the temple,

they did so "from their surplus wealth." This

woman -- in her faith and devotion -- offers

"her whole livelihood." Jesus invited his

disciples to see with God's eyes, to recognize

a holy life in people the world overlooks. Here

-- in the poor, the vulnerable, the

marginalized -- God waits hidden.

Today's Gospel begs a few questions.

What do we see? Whom do we value? Are

we impressed by the pomp and circumstance

of modern day Pharisees? Do we ignore their

self-righteousness because it looks

impressive, even seems somewhat helpful?

The point isn't to judge the scribes, of course.

God can see their hearts as well, and those

assessments are firmly his responsibility. The

point is to turn our eyes from the typically

honored to the rarely respected. Are we

disinterested in the poverty of the modern

day widows? Do we ignore their faith

because we forget to look for it?

This Sunday, consider the widows in your

own life. Who can you see with God's eyes?

Beard a Bro Challenge

The PPB Youth Ministry program is

having a beard challenge for the month of

November. The PPB Youth Ministry

program is raising funds that will go

towards retreats (such as Journey), March

for Life, and local youth events. What

better way to bring attention to than to grow a beard!

When folks ask you why are letting your whiskers gets long, you can

tell them all about our youth and how you are helping bring them

closer to Christ. Yes, it’s true…. by not shaving you are leading

others closer to Christ.

The options are endless…. You could sport a goatee or a spade

shaped beard. Perhaps you are more the Abe Lincoln beard type or

how about Moses? It’s up to you.

Challenge your soon to be bearded friend wisely.

Here is how it works:

• $5 to challenge a friend for a weeks’ worth of whiskers

• $10 with give you two weeks

• $20 ups the growth to three weeks

• $40 for 30 days’ worth lot of luscious locks.

If you like the clean shaven look we have an added bonus.

For just $15 you can get beard insurance.

• $15 beard insurance (assures you will not be challenged)

Challenge forms will be available after Mass at St. Mary’s, Holy

Rosary and St. Louis or contact

[email protected].

DID YOU KNOW? Hell And Purgatory Still Exist –

Contrary to the belief of many Catholics, the Church still

teaches that “the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin,

descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell,

eternal fire” (CCC 1035) Furthermore, “all who die in God’s

grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed

assured of their eternal salvation, but after death they undergo

purification, so to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the

joy of heaven.” (CCC 1030) This purification process, formally

declared by the Church at the Councils of Florence and Trent,

is known as Purgatory.
