Dear Parishioners and Friends,On the Fourth of July weekend we were honored to have with us Fr. Firman Kouassi, an African missionary from Liberia. He preached at both Masses and greeted parishioners after Mass. He was humbled by your applause and welcome. Fr. Firman will be back with us for the month of August after spending July with Fr. Seán Maher in Dracut, MA. Originally, Fr. Firman would have stayed in Melrose between St. Mary’s and our parish, but due to Fr. Seán’s transfer we have this arrangement.

Even though Fr. Firman has been a priest for only three years, he has been given the challenge to build a new church in a section of Monrovia where a new development had sprung up in the last few years. His ministry involves much evangelization because most of the new residents are not Christian. He also has the task of raising the money for the building of the new church. I found his approach

to be very creative, for he plans on turning the area around the church into a small park. There he thought he would sell ice-cream and water to raise money and to get to know his neighbors. Given that electricity is sporadic, I suggested he think this through a little bit more. It is great he is thinking outside the box. I remembered a friend of mine from years past who shared with me ways to raise money with food

The cost is minimal while the profit is great if you sell shaved ice, cotton candy or popcorn. Fr. Firman was intrigued with these ideas. I treated him to some shaved ice or Italian ice and he liked it very much. I shared with him the fact that if he lost electricity, all he would lose is ice and not all the costly ingredients in making ice cream. Would

anyone know where they sell cotton candy so he could try some? Maybe as a parish we could help him with the seed money or equipment to get him started. Any ideas? Please talk to me.Enjoy the summer.

May peace be given you,

Fr Ron

FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJULY 10 ,2016

Beloved of GodIf we listen carefully to the readings this Sunday, we will hear the whole Christian, Catholic life very gently stated.

In the First Reading Moses describes how simple God's command is. I would like to quote his words because they are beautiful.

God’s command is not too mysterious and remote for you. It is not up in the sky, that you should say, ‘Who will go up in the sky to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’ Nor is it across the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will cross the sea to get it for us and tell us of it, that we may carry it out?’

The commandment of the Lord is very near to us, already in our hearts and in our mouths. We have only to carry it out. But what is it?

In the Gospel, a lawyer is very interested in this question. He asks Jesus to collapse the whole law down to a single saying. Since the answer is “not too mysterious and remote,” Jesus asks the lawyer what he thinks it is. The man says, by rote:

You shall love the Lord, your God,with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.

“You have answered correctly,” Jesus says. “Do this and you will live.” But the man wants specifics. He is digging. He asks, who is my neighbor?

What would be your answer to this question, which seems to be the crux of the matter? Take your time.

For his part, Jesus is trying to get the man (and you?) to find a simple answer without being handed one. As before, he does not respond directly, but this time gives the lawyer a parable to chew on.

A man fell victim to robbers. They beat him terribly, take his money, and leave him lying in the road, half-dead. A priest (an Israeli) saw this wounded man on the road and he passed right by, averting his eyes. A Levite (an Israeli) did the same thing. Along came a Samaritan, who theoretically should have been an enemy of the Israelis. But he did not avert his eyes or cross to the other side of the road.*

He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn, and cared for him.The next day he took out two silver coins

and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction,‘Take care of him.’

Now the lawyer starts to get it. Jesus asks him, “Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers' victim?” and the lawyer says immediately, “the one who treated him with mercy.” Jesus answers, “Go and do likewise.”

Jesus does the same thing with you and me. Jesus keeps working us, trying to get us to see the simple answer that hides inside us. Go help those in need. God has given you an open heart. If only you would let your heart receive his love and then pass it on to his other people! This is not too mysterious or remote. Start now. Become what you were made to be. It is written within the law and within you.__________* Jesus is not trying to slander the Israelis, he is showing that your neighbor does not consist of just your own tribe or family or even just your friends. Every person on earth is your neighbor. Each is beloved to God, each is precious to the One we are to love with our entire self, mind and strength. and being.

SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJULY 17 ,2016

Welcoming GodTwo stories about hospitality this week. Hospitality to God.

The First Reading says that Abraham was sitting outside on a hot day. He looked up to find three men standing nearby on the path, apparently satisfying their curiosity about the tent and its occupants. It is not clear that Abraham knew who they were, but we are told that they were God in a special appearance to Abraham.

How does Abraham react to this presence?

Talk about hospitality! He flies into action. He bows deeply. He begs them to relax from their journey and receive comfort, nourishment and rest. Beautiful welcome in the Eastern part of the world.

He rushes into the great tent, issuing chaotic commands to his wife. “Quick, three measures of fine flour! Knead it and make rolls.” He picks the best steer from the flock and orders the servant to prepare it. He dashes outside for curds and milk and at long last, sets the whole meal before them.

Quite a scene. Quite welcoming.

As the dinner progressed, Sarah stood behind the tent flap listening. All at once the men made a sudden, astonishing statement to Abraham. Next year Sarah will bear a son by him. Sarah actually laughs out loud as she hears that her dried-up body, nearly 89 years old, is supposed to birth a tender child.*

Even so, as you may know, this amazing thing will indeed take

place, and thank God that Abraham had listened to the men (God).

Second story. In the Gospel, Jesus enters the house of his friends Mary and Martha, and is welcomed warmly. As he sits down, Mary arranges herself at his feet and focuses her wide clear eyes upon him.

Meanwhile, Martha bustles about preparing dinner.

Unfair! Tired and irritated, Martha demands that Jesus put a stop to Mary’s lounging and make her come and help.

Jesus says, to quote, “No. Mary has chosen the better part.”

Isn't this unjust to Martha? She should have told Jesus, “We are not having any food tonight, we are both going to just sit and stare at you”!

In truth, Martha’s trouble was not that she was scrambling about, but that as she did so, she forgot about Jesus. She was busy constructing a meal, not making him welcome. He even tells her that she is anxious and worried about many things, and has forgotten the one thing necessary.

What is this one thing necessary? It is relation to Christ. Real hospitality means a two-way relationship in which host and guest open to each other and become present to one another in various ways. Yes, hosts do work on the details, and work hard. But they always remember the visitor they are preparing it for. Excellent hosts manage somehow to get everything ready but also to truly listen to and converse with guests.

That is how we are supposed to act every day. We are to find God in all things, in all the people we know and/or help, and no matter how busy we might be, to relate to them because God is within them, deep in their souls. Touch them. Hear them. Prepare their meal without forgetting them. We will be giving the hospitality to God himself.

Abraham gave it. Mary gave it. Martha forgot like you and I do, but she learned.

Let’s try to learn it too__________

RECONCILIATION Saturday, 3:30 - 4:15 pm, or by appointment at any time.

JOINING THE PARISHNo matter what your journey has been, we want to be your companions for the next steps, to share the Gospel together and to help each other along the way. Most of us are from within parish boundaries in Melrose and Saugus, but we have parishioners from as far afield as Georgetown and Framingham! Please introduce yourself to a staff member, or drop in for coffee on Sunday. You can register as a parishioner online via our website, or stop by the rectory.

ADULT INITIATION, RCIAWe are always ready to begin the process by which an adult or older child becomes a Catholic, either by full initiation in baptism, or by reception into full communion. We are also happy to prepare you for adult Confirmation. Contact Fr. Ron.

BAPTISM FOR INFANTSNormally, the baptism of infants is celebrated within the Sunday assembly at a time convenient to the parents. Parents must be parishioners here or have a letter of permission from their pastor. Fr. Ron is the staff contact person for preparation.

GENERATIONS OF FAITHWe are a community of life-long learners. Our parish program of inter-generational learning and celebration of faith is called Generations of Faith. We all meet together several times a year for “Faith Festivals,” and many opportunities for adult learning and enrichment are offered in the bulletin and programs. Materials are in the Church or available at our Faith Formation Office through Ann Lahiff.

MARRIAGEThe engaged couple must contact the Rectory at least six months in advance, preferably a year ahead. One must be a parishioner, or have permission by his or her own pastor to celebrate the marriage with us.

CARE OF THE SICK To arrange for the Sacrament of the Sick, for Holy Communion for the home-bound, or Viaticum for the Dying, please contact the parish office. We normally send ministers out with communion after the eight o’clock on Sunday, and also schedule regular home visits during the week. It is always possible to anoint the sick during regularly scheduled liturgies. All you have to do is ask!

ORDER of CHRISTIAN FUNERALSWe will work with you to plan your own funeral liturgy or that of a loved one, and are prepared to celebrate the Vigil, also known as the “Wake,” in the Church building for those who choose.

Keep an eye out for the mural in the center of Wingate Street, a project created by the community that depicts the history of the city.Check out the exhibits in the various businesses; the Arts District supports local artists by inviting them to show and sell their work in a variety of venues. And watch for upcoming events... There is always something in the works on Wingate !

The Pilot is an important voice in the public square that brings you the Catholic perspective on current events.

Inspired by the vision of our publisher, Cardinal Seán O’Malley, The Pilot covers it all — from in-depth reporting on Pope Francis to the good works of Boston parishes.

Each week, The Pilot brings you the stories of Boston Catholics who bring the Works of Mercy to life on a daily basis.

Proclaiming the present Holy Year of Mercy, Pope Francis said he wants to make it evident that the Church’s mission is to be a witness of compassion. “Let us not forget that God forgives and God forgives always,” Pope Francis said. “Let us never tire of asking for forgiveness.”

We invite you to join the Pilot readership today for only $19.95. This limited-time offer saves you 49% off the regular subscription rate. Thank you for your support.
