Incarnation Parish Bulletin

The Seventh Sunday of Easter May 24, 2020

Dear Friends,As you are by now aware, Governor Baker has announced a four phased approach to re-opening businesses across the state. Phase One will allow some essential stores and businesses to re-open immediately and we were pleasantly surprised to hear that places of worship are included in this first phase. Immediately after the announcement, the Archdiocese sent out to every parish an eleven page directive with guidelines to re-open our churches safely. This is all very good news but I want to be clear-re-opening does not mean a return to normal. How we celebrate mass will be very different for the foreseeable future. The

necessary precautions and requirements are long and will definitely take some time to get used to, but the presence of the virus has already changed our lives on so many levels. As we put together our own plan of re-opening the parish, I want to make you aware of a few decisions that have already been made.

1. This coming week, both churches and offices will be deep cleaned and sanitized by an outside company. The cleaning will consist of a disinfecting fogging/spraying as well as the use of UVC light to kill all bacteria and viruses.

2. Daily Mass will resume this week, starting on May 25th at 8:00am.

Regular Weekday Schedule-8:00am Mon & Tue at MBS8:00am Thurs & Fri at Inc

3. Funeral liturgies will also be allowed starting this coming week, May 25th.

4. Weekend liturgies will resume next weekend, May 30-31-the Feast of Pentecost. We will initially return to our regular weekend schedule at both parishes but that may change due to limits of capacity numbers allowed and the time necessary to sanitize the

1

Incarnation Parish Bulletin church between liturgies. We may well need to make some changes in mass times due to these constraints going forward.

5. We will only be allowed 40% of our church capacity at any liturgy. Once we reach that number we will not be allowed to admit any more and the doors closed. The people who attend any liturgy will be required to social distance (6 feet) from others. Families of one household will be able to sit together but all areas of the church will be clearly marked. Everyone must wear a mask or a facial covering while in church.

We will all be asked to accept and adjust to many other changes and requirements as we begin to open up our churches. We will all need a great deal of patience and flexibility in the coming weeks for sure. Please keep in mind that although it is great news to be back in church for mass-it is not business as usual. You will notice many other changed as well and we will be asked to accept a new normal.

We will get through this together.

THE SEVENTH SUNDAY OF EASTERMAY 24, 2020

AscensionHe has been telling the apostles about his crucifixion and death, remember? The possibility of losing him had terrified them, as we saw.

But then he rose again.

5

Incarnation Parish Bulletin This too was a shock, a huge one. It was “unbelievable” for many of them, in the full sense of that word.

Some simply refused to accept it! But in time they got over “resurrection-shock.” All of them, even Philip, could let go of the sorrows of Jesus’ crucifixion and death and have some real joy for a change.

And then he told them he was going away, this time forever.

He did not exactly tell them, he let them overhear his great prayer to the Father. (7 Easter Gospel) A really huge jolt. Whiplash material. First it involved insurmountable sorrow and loss, followed then by out-of-your-mind astonishment and joy, but resulting in goodbye forever.

Jesus’ great prayer in the Gospel for the Seventh Sunday of Easter is one very helpful way in which he consoled them.* There he is praying not for the world but for the ones his Father gave him. His words aren’t about separation but just the opposite: the disciples are always to be with him, and with the Father as well, even to the end of time!

You and I, just like the disciples, need a lot of time to understand this.

Here is what Jesus is saying, in one interpretation:

The Father and I are one. When you see me you see the Father. And I will be one with you in the same way the Father is with me. We all will be present to each other in the oneness of love.

Then a funny thing happens. Instead of breaking in with a clownish “couldn’t you just show us the Father and forget all this talk about unity and oneness,” Phillip begins to listen as Jesus prays in a

remarkable way.

In essence, Jesus says,

they have accepted your words, Abba, and they truly understand the fact that I came from you. They believe that you sent me.

What is it that they have accepted and believed? It is the power of God’s love even amid departures and loss.

And something else, something we saw last week, but could not identify yet. Jesus was so wide open to God that the two were completely at one. “Whoever sees

me sees the Father,” he said. That is a very deep description of such love.

How does this make sense to us?

We need to have the Holy Spirit of God come to us tenderly and lift us into flight so we can see how the risen Christ works.

6

Incarnation Parish Bulletin From such a vantage point, maybe Jesus would say something like the following to us:

I have shown you who God is and who I am. Now I go, like all human beings, back to the Father—your Father and my Father. This Holy Spirit of God I have been describing? It is no fantasy. I am going to send it into you, and as often as you accept it you are one with me and with the Father.

Next week, on Pentecost, we will celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit. For now we are waiting. Let us drink a lot of spiritual coffee so that we will not sleep through it.

John Foley, SJ________ * See the Gospel for the 7th Sunday of Easter for this prayer. Especially, “and now I will no longer be in the world, but they are in the world, while I am coming to you.” (Jn 17:11)

If your diocese, like so many, is celebrating the Ascension on Sunday instead of Thursday you would hear a different reading.

John Foley, SJFr. John Foley, SJ, is a composer and scholar at Saint Louis University.

THE PERSPECTIVE OF JUSTICE

The Mission in the WorldHaving ascended into heaven, Jesus can now say that “I am in the world no more, but these are in the world.” He is not physically present in the world the way he was in the first third of the first century. It is now up to us to deal with the world.

During the period dominated by Trent and Vatican I, the Catholic Church was defensive in its approach to the world, which was regarded as an occasion of sin. Vatican II heralded a new approach based on dialogue rather than confrontation.

The world is viewed not as the enemy but rather as the object of service. This positive approach is much closer to our biblical roots: “I believe that I shall see the good things of the Lord in the land of the living.”

“Time is the unfolding of truth that already is.” The world and its history are where we encounter the eternal God, “reaching from end to end of the universe.” We are not called to abandon the world but to remain in it and to take responsibility for its well ordering. The paschal mystery is a challenge to us to lift the world to the heavens.

Holding faithfully to the gospel and exercising her mission in the world, the Church consolidates peace among men, to God’s glory. For it is her task to uncover, cherish, and ennoble all that is true, good, and beautiful in the human communityVatican II, Constitution on the Church in the Modern World, 1965: 76.
