Dear Parishioners, Simon of Cyrene was the man compelled by the Romans to help Jesus carry his cross on the way to Calvary. Weakened by physical torture, Jesus was unable to make the journey by himself. Little is known about this Simon of Cyrene. He is mentioned in one verse of each of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Mark states that he is the father of Alexander and Rufus, who according to tradition, were missionaries of some standing in the early Christian community. Cyrene was a Greek city in northern Africa in what is today Libya. It was the capital and chief city of the region. About three hundred years before Jesus, a large number of Jews were forced to settle in the area. The community was still there at the time of Jesus. The fifth Station of the Cross recalls this verse from the scriptures. Simon was simply in the crowd. He did not come forward to volunteer—he was forced. But the point is without his help, Jesus would have never made it to Calvary. In our world today, there are many people who carry heavy crosses. They suffer under the weight of their burdens. Some of these crosses are physical, caused by sickness, deformity, or accidents. Others are psychological and may stem from a deep loss, a great fear, an emotional scar or rejection, etc. They also are too heavy to carry alone. Yet, who is willing to help? Unlike Simon, who was forced to help Jesus, there are many today who would consider it a great honor to help our Lord. If you are one, let me tell you that you have the chance. For whenever you help another carry their cross, you are carrying His cross. You have the honor of walking behind our Lord helping to drag the weight of a terrible and painful burden. Jesus died for all who suffer and their cross is His cross. No one should have to carry their cross by themselves. And every disciple should not abandon a brother or sister in need of help. This week as we recall Jesus’ passion and death, remember his pain. But remember His pain is all around us. If we wish to help our Lord carry his cross, all we need to do is help his brother or sister carry theirs. Fr. Jeff
