Dear Parishioners, Protecting the Least Among Us. Since the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision on January 22, 1973, more than 55 million American lives have been ended by abortion. Among the many justice issues we face in our world today, this issue must be addressed with grave concern. Indifference is not an option. We are not excused from addressing it anymore than we are free from ignoring the hungry, thirsty, naked, stranger, ill or imprisoned. Jesus teaches that our treatment of these poor or little ones is the basis by which we inherit the kingdom. (Matthew 25:31-46) This is the foundation of Catholic moral teaching. Each and every person is infused with God-given dignity. This dignity is given to all—Christian and non-Christian, young or old, great or small, saint or sinner. You have it. I have it. It cannot be lost or taken away. Abortion undermines this claim to human dignity. The disrespect of one person’s dignity is the disrespect of all human dignity. We are all invited to work to honor it. However, not only is it important as to “what” we teach or proclaim; it is just as important as to “how” we do so. St. Paul reminds us that we must “speak the truth with love.” (Ephesians 4:15) It is not a confrontation simply to change law. Rather it is an effort to change hearts. Therefore we must always keep watch over our own hearts to be sure we do our work in love and hope. In his apostolic exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis wrote, “Among the vulnerable for whom the Church wishes to care with particular love and concern are unborn children, the most defenseless and innocent among us. Nowadays efforts are made to deny them their human dignity and to do with them whatever one pleases, taking their lives and passing laws preventing anyone from standing in the way of this.” This week, as we mark the 46th anniversary of this decision, my prayer is that we will listen to the lives of the most vulnerable in our society and speak on their behalf. This week, 27 students and several chaperones from Blessed Sacrament School are in Washington D.C. to participate in the annual March for Life. How grateful I am that they and their parents have allowed them to be part of this event. Experience, and then reflection of the experience, is perhaps the most effective way to learn. Please keep these parishioners in your prayers. Fr. Jeff
