First Reading (Jeremiah 20:7-9) The prophet Jeremiah has been called to speak God’s
message into a culture that is hostile and largely unresponsive. Being a prophet is costly.
He is tempted to choose an easier path. He even accuses God of seducing him into accepting
a call that has brought him only ‘derision and reproach’ (vv. 7-8). Yet because of the divine
spark within him he will not yield to the temptation.
Second Reading (Romans 12:1-2) St. Paul appeals to Roman Christians to remember ‘the
mercies of God’ (what God has done in Christ) and to worship God by offering their bodies
‘as a living sacrifice’. He reminds them that their behaviour as Christians must be different
from that seen in the world around them. How they live their lives will determine their
ongoing discovery of God’s will for them.
Gospel Reading (Matthew 16:21–27) A typical Matthean pattern is notable in today’s
gospel: teaching follows incident or event. The incident here is Peter’s misunderstanding of
the first prediction by Jesus of his forthcoming passion, death and resurrection (v. 21).
Peter remonstrates with Jesus: ‘Lord, this must not happen to you’. But Jesus sees things
differently. He must follow the path of suffering marked out by God. Peter’s well-meant
remark is not a help but a hindrance – a stumbling block, in fact. After this comes a
teaching - applicable to all who follow Jesus. The journey will demand self-sacrificing love.
Discipleship is costly. There is no easy route. The disciple will follow the Master.

“Praise God in difficult moments. Seek God in quiet moments.” Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament
resumes on Tuesday in the Lourdes Chapel from
8a.m. until 7.15p.m. We welcome back the regular
team of people who give one hour of their time each
Tuesday to attend but new adorers are also needed
to ensure that the Blessed Sacrament is not left
unattended. Why not drop in for a few minutes of
quiet reflection, away from the rush and strain of daily life,
and simply say a silent prayer? Or just sit and
reflect in the presence of the Lord? Pray for those
who are in the greatest need of your prayers at this
time in their lives. “Will you give a little of your time to be in the very presence of Our Lord?”
The normal Mass schedule resumes
this week. Mass will be celebrated at
9.30a.m. each morning except on
Tuesday. Mass on Tuesdays will be at
7.30p.m. with prayers to Our Lady of
Perpetual Help.
The church will be open for private
prayer each weekday until 6p.m.
(Tuesdays until after the 7.30p.m.
Mass).

The 50th. Anniversary of the opening
of St. Bernadette’s Church takes place
in October. On Sunday 29th. October
at 3p.m., Bishop Anthony Farquhar
will preside at a special Mass of
Celebration. All Parishioners, former
Parishioners, and friends are most
welcome to attend. Our Parish choirs
will accompany the liturgy. It is hoped
that some of the priests who worked
here over the years will also attend.
Work is well under way to produce a
commemorative booklet for this great
occasion. Please make a note in your
diary to attend!
The Children’s Liturgy will resume
next Sunday at the 12p.m. Mass. The
Children’s Liturgy Team use story-
telling and art to help the children
understand the meaning of the
Sunday gospel.
Last week’s collection amounted to £1,789. Sincere
thanks for your generosity.
The monthly collection for the Support of the Priests
will be held this weekend.
Team 1 will help with the collection this week.

This is a 10-week course to be held in St. Malachy’s on

they are reading. Fr. Michael McGinnity P.P., of
St. Malachy’s and Fr. Oliver Treanor, former Theology
Professor in Maynooth, will be the course facilitators.
Volunteers are invited to participate on behalf of St.
Bernadette’s. Course details and application forms are
now available from the Sacristy. The fees will be paid for
by the Parish.
