2000 Hail Mary Devotion Wednesday, March 25, 2020

Mt. Carmel Church (lower Church) 23-25 Newtown Avenue, Astoria, N.Y. 11102

9 A.m. – 9 P.M.

Praying 2000 Hail Marys is a private devotion. It is a very powerful intercessory prayer. It is praying 2000 Hail Marys with our Blessed Mother to Our Lord Jesus Christ. You are invited to pray 2000 Hail Marys, asking our Blessed Mother for 3 personal favors. Combined with your faith and sincerity of heart, these are graces or intentions which our Mother Mary will intercede for you. All are welcome to pray this devotion with us

FROM THE OGLE OFFICE Dear friends: Since Lent is a time of conversion and reconciliation which both need regular reinforcement, the practice of devotions is important. Devotions include the Rosary, the Divine Mercy Chaplet, novenas, daily devotionals of scripture, and occasional events such as First Fridays, First Saturday and the 2000 Hail Marys Day to be observed here on Wednesday March 25, the feast of the Annunciation. All these draw their strength from the celebration of the Eucharist itself, “the source and summit” of the Christian life, as Vatican II teaches. We encourage weekday Mass attendance as a Lenten practice for everyone. Our parish offers a schedule that includes Holy Mass from Monday to Friday at 8:00 AM and 12:00 Noon, (Saturdays only at 8 AM) as well as Spanish Mass every First Friday at 7:30 PM. Therefore I’d like to offer a little summary of parish practice and policy with regard to the celebration of Mass and Mass intentions: Private Masses (other than funerals): We often receive requests to celebrate a “private Mass” for a recently deceased family member, often in a foreign country. This is an understandable, noble and laudatory Catholic instinct. It is absolutely true that we are to pray for the dead. Practically speaking, however, it would be impossible to schedule private Masses for every close relative in a parish as large as ours, or in most other urban parishes. However, we do offer ways for addressing this valuable and necessary need that do not require a private Mass. These arrangements must all be made by calling the parish office. They are: Announced Mass Intention at one of our regularly scheduled Masses. You receive a Mass card for this Mass which you may present to the family of the deceased. These intentions fill up months in advance, but sometimes one may be available on short notice. Purgatorial Society: You may enroll your deceased loved one in the Parish Purgatorial Society. Mass will be offered for the enrolled faith-ful departed on the First Friday of each month at 8 AM for the period of a year (twelve First Friday Masses). There is no limit to the number of people who can be enrolled in the Purgatorial Society. The names of the newly-enrolled are published each week in the bulletin. You receive a Mass card for this Mass which you may present to the family of the deceased. Collective Mass Intention: Every parish in our Diocese may have one regularly scheduled Mass in English and one in another language, with several announced intentions. The Collective Mass intentions are published and announced in the same way as other announced Mass intentions. This option is available only for the Saturday 5 PM English Mass and the Sunday 12:30 Spanish Mass. You receive a Mass card for this Mass which you may present to the family of the deceased. Prayer of the Faithful: Each week we include a petition for the names of the currently ill or recently deceased of the parish or loved ones of the parishioners. You may ask to have your deceased loved one prayed for in the Prayer of the Faithful (also known as the “Universal Pray-er”) at all Masses for one weekend. The First Friday Spanish Mass at 7:30 PM is also available for this practice. May the Holy Season of Lent be a time of meaningful conversion and reconciliation for us all.

LENTEN REGULATIONS—2020

ABSTINENCE: The Church requires all the faithful who have reached their 14th year of age to abstain totally from meat on all Fridays during Lent.

FASTING: All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 inclusive are also bound to observe the fasting regulation on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. Light sustenance may also be taken on two other occasions in the course of the day. The Church also requests that pastors and parents see to it that young persons who are not bound to follow the above requirements, are educated in a authentic sense of penance.

EASTER DUTY: After they have been initiated into the Most Holy Eucharist, all the faithful are bound by the obligation of receiving Communion at least once a year. The precept must be fulfilled during the Easter season, unless for a good reason it is fulfilled at another time during the year. Easter time begins at the Vigil on Holy Saturday and concludes with the celebration of Pentecost. By special indult, for the Dioceses in the United States, this period is extended to include the period from Ash Wednesday to Trinity Sunday.

The following should also be noted: By divine law, all the faithful are required to do penance. In view of this, the obligation to observe, as a whole or “substantially” the penitential days specified by the Church, is a serious one. In addition, all other Fridays of the year remain as days of penance in prayerful remembrance of the Passion of Jesus Christ. While abstinence, in a true spirit of penance, is commended, the Bishops of the United States have indicated that each individual may substitute for that tradition some other practice of voluntary self-denial or personal penance. This may involve acts of mortification, temperance, prayer or charity.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS During Lent, we will have Stations of the Cross in English every Friday after the 12:00pm Mass. Stations of the cross in Spanish every Friday during lent at 7:00pm in the Lower Church.
