Responsorial Psalm Psalm 22

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

All who see me deride me; they curl their lips, they toss their heads: “He trusted in the Lord, let him save him; let him release him, for in him he delights.”

For dogs have surrounded me; a band of the wicked besets me. They tear holes in my hands and my feet; I can count every one of my bones.

They divide my clothing among them, They cast lots for my robe. But you, O Lord, do not stay afar off; my strength, make haste to help me! I

I will tell of your name to my kin, and praise you in the midst of the assembly; “You who fear the Lord, give him praise; all descendents of Jacob, give him glory; revere him, all you descendents of Israel.”

My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

Gospel Acclamation Glory and praise to you, O Christ. Christ became obedient for us unto death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him: and bestowed on him the name which is above every name. Glory and praise to you, O Christ.

Communion Antiphon Father, if this chalice cannot pass without my drinking it, your will be done.

Narrative of the Passion Today and on Good Friday the priest begins the passion narrative by proclaiming: “The Passion of our Lord Jesus Christ according to...” The congregation does not respond at all. Don’t say “Glory to you O Lord” and don’t make the triple signs of the cross. At the end, the priest says: “The Gospel of the Lord” and the congregation responds: “Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.” The elderly, sick and infirm may sit during the reading of the Passion.

Palm Branches Place your palm branches respectfully in your homes, as a reminder of Christ’s Kingship and victory. They may be returned before Lent next year, to make ashes for Ash Wednesday. Ministers to the sick, please take blessed palm crosses to the sick and housebound.

PRAYERS FOR THE ELECT AND CANDIDATES Offer special prayers for those who will be received into the full communion of the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday night: a. The Elect (Catechumens) (not baptised): Bernalee Daniels, Thembelihle Ngcobo, Kaylee van der Westhuizen. b. Candidate (baptised in another Church): Lea-Anne Clayton. c. Baptised Catholic completing her initiation: Alexia Robert.

HOLY WEEK OUTLINE In Holy Week the Church celebrates the mysteries of salvation

accomplished by Christ in the last days of his life on earth, from his triumphal entry into Jerusalem as Messiah-King on Palm Sunday until his Passion, Death and Resurrection.

The Triduum is the period of three days that begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday evening and ends with Vespers (evening prayer) on

Easter Sunday. It is the culmination of the liturgical year. The services form a unity, so it is very important to attend them all. See the ‘Holy Week Diary’ above.

CHRISM MASS Cardinal Napier and Archbishop Gabuza encourage us to attend the solemn and beautiful Chrism Mass at 10.00 a.m. this Wednesday 17 April at the Cathedral. They and over a hundred priests will renew their ordination promises. The Cardinal will consecrate Oils which will be used throughout the Archdiocese, for Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Orders and Anointing of the Sick. We will receive these sacred oils formally in our parish during the Procession of Gifts on Holy Thursday night.

THURSDAY OF THE LORD’S SUPPER No genuflection upon entering the church as the tabernacle will be empty; bow to the altar. At 7.30 p.m. we shall commemorate Jesus’ Last Supper with his

disciples, at which he: instituted the Eucharist (“This is my Body… This is my Blood…”);

instituted the priesthood (“Do this in memory of me…”);

commanded his disciples to love one another, as he loved them; gave an example of humility, service and love by washing their feet.

Prayer Vigil After the Last Supper, Jesus crossed the Kidron Valley to the Mount of Olives to pray in the Garden of Gethsemane. Sadness came over him, and great distress.

‘Wait here and keep awake with me’ he said. After communion

the Blessed Sacrament will be carried to the altar of repose. We are encouraged to spend a suitable period of time in adoration,

which will end at 6.00 a.m.. Will you stay awake for one hour with the Lord?

“O Divine Jesus! lonely tonight… without visitor or worshipper… I offer Thee my poor heart… Thou art always watching… In Thy Love Thou dost never sleep and Thou art never weary of Thy vigil for sinners. O lonely Jesus! May the flame of my heart burn and beam always in company with Thee.” Saint Peter Julian Eymard.

FRIDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD Good Friday is a day of fast and abstinence The Church recommends that we make this day and Holy Saturday quiet, restful and contemplative days.

Avoid TV, shopping, unnecessary chores, social gatherings, festive meals and celebrations.

Spend time in Scripture reading, prayer, reflection and thanksgiving.

Divine Mercy novena begins.

Stations of the Cross at 10.00 a.m. (also Children’s Stations from Gr 3 upwards)

Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at 3.00 p.m.

This is the most important liturgy of the day. There will be:

Scripture readings that develop the theme of Jesus’ suffering and death,

Intercessions for the salvation of the whole world,

Veneration of the cross – the symbol of Jesus’ triumph,

Holy Communion.

Mass is not celebrated anywhere in the world today.

No genuflection The tabernacle will be empty. Bow to the altar.

Prostration All kneel in silent prayer when Father prostrates himself at the beginning of the Celebration

of the Lord’s Passion. The prostration signifies the abasement of man and the grief and sorrow of the

Church.

Veneration of the Cross The congregation stands as the Cross to be venerated is carried through the

church. The Cross-bearer sings ‘Behold the wood of the cross’ and all respond ‘Come let us worship’

after which they kneel and adore for a brief moment in silence, then stand. Repeated twice.

Special collection for the preservation of the places sanctified by Christ in the Holy Land and to

assist the Christian faithful there, and for the sick and elderly priests’ fund.

Silence There is a mood of sorrow and desolation. At the end the faithful bow to the cross and

depart in silence and maintain silence near the church. Some may remain to venerate or pray at

the Cross.

HOLY SATURDAY On Holy Saturday the Church waits at the Lord’s tomb, meditating on his passion, death and descent to the dead. It is not a time for festive social gatherings in anticipation of Easter but rather for quiet Scripture reading, prayer, reflection and thanksgiving for the sacrifice of Christ. The Church recommends that we extend our Good Friday fast and abstinence to this day, if possible, so that we may come to celebrate the joy of the Lord’s Resurrection with alert and open minds, and uplifted and welcoming hearts. Blood Donation. The Young Adults invite everyone to join them on Holy Saturday to donate blood. They will meet for breakfast at 9am at Java Café in Adelaide Tambo Road and then head across the road to donate. For any further details contact Jeff Rose - 0837752399

HOLY SATURDAY NIGHT – EASTER VIGIL Candle holders. Cut off the upper part of a small cold drink bottle. Invert it and insert candle. Bells. Bring small bells to ring during the joyful Gloria. The Southern Cross will be on sale outside the church after the Easter Vigil. Easter Vigil When the Hebrews were in Egypt, they kept watch for the Lord’s passover which was to free them from slavery under Pharaoh. That passover prefigured the Passover of Christ, the night of true liberation. During the dark hours of Holy Saturday night, turning into the first day of the week, Jesus rose from the dead. The Easter Vigil, beginning at 7.00 p.m. on this night of all nights, is a joyful celebration of the Lord’s resurrection. The elaborate and beautiful celebration includes: 1. A Liturgy of Light The blessing of a large fire outside. The flames dispel the darkness and light up the night. The blessing and lighting of the Easter candle which represents Christ the true Light. The procession into the church, which is in darkness, led by the light of the Paschal candle alone, just as the children of Israel were guided at night by a pillar of fire.

Page 6: Parish of Our Lady of Fatima · Communion Antiphon Father, if this chalice cannot pass without my drinking it, your will be done. Narrative of the Passion Today and on Good Friday

The gradual passing of light from the Paschal candle to the candles of the faithful. The sung Easter Proclamation (the Exultet), at the end of which we follow the custom of raising our candles while singing the festive “Amen.”

2. The Liturgy of the Word Several Scripture readings through which we meditate on the marvels that God has worked for his people since the creation of the world. The Gloria and joyful Alleluias return. 3. The Liturgy of Baptism and Confirmation The Elect (catechumens) will be reborn in baptism through water and the Holy Spirit and will be received into the Church. All the baptised will renew their baptismal promises while holding lighted candles. The assembly will be sprinkled with Easter water. The newly baptised and the candidates will receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. 4. The Liturgy of the Eucharist This is the high point of the Vigil, for it is the commemoration of the sacrifice of the Cross and the presence of the risen Christ: The newly-baptised and newly-confirmed will be called, with us, to the table of the Lord to receive the Body and Blood of Christ for the first time. Sunday Mass The Easter Vigil is Sunday Mass, so it is not necessary to attend Mass in the morning too.

EASTER SUNDAY Mass during the day Mass at 7.00 and 9.00 a.m. are joyful celebrations of the Resurrection of our The Mass includes a sprinkling with water blessed at the Vigil. The Paschal candle is to be lit in all of the more solemn liturgical celebrations until Pentecost Sunday (not only until Ascension Day). There will be no Mass at 5.15 p.m..

Passion (Palm) Sunday Year C 14th April 2019 Leonard Doohan Commentary

First Reading (Is 50: 4-7) This passage comes from the second section of the book of Isaiah

(chapters 40-55), written during the exile and known as the Book of Consolation. This part of the writing of the prophet contain four songs that describe the suffering servant of the Lord (Is 42:1-7;49:1 -7;50:4-9; 52:13-53:12). This mysterious figure of the servant suffers on behalf of others and becomes an example of Jesus’ own mission. The first song (Is 42:1-7) describes the call of the servant: he will be filled with the Holy Spirit and will bring justice to the world. The second song (Is 49:1-7) describes the mission of the servant to restore Israel and to be a light to the nations. The third song (Is 50:4-9), which is our reading today, describes the faithfulness and confidence of the servant. The fourth song (Is 52:13-53:12) describes the intense and bitter suffering the servant must endure. The servant, not unlike Jeremiah who said, ‘I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter’ (Jer 11:19), accepts his suffering as part of his mission to save others.

Gospel (Lk 22:14-23:56) The passion account in today’s liturgy is taken from the Gospel of Luke. It

emphasizes the themes of call, covenant, mission, dedication in suffering, and the endless trials and sufferings of the Servant of the Lord. In some ways, it is like an expanded presentation of the four suffering servant songs of the first reading from Isaiah and a detailed understanding of the implications of Paul’s hymn to Christ’s self-emptying. The first half of the reading deals with the preparations for Christ’s passion. 1. (22:14-20) Jesus’ last meal before he suffers is a covenant in which he gives over his body in death and pours out his blood in sacrifice. 2. (22:21-27). While Jesus focuses on self-sacrifice for others, Judas plans betrayal, and the apostles thoughtlessly argue for position and prestige. 3. (22:28-34) Jesus promises to strengthen Peter, while the latter arrogantly expresses confidence in himself but ends in denying his Lord. 4. (22:35-38) Jesus foretells the world-changing effect of his passion and the need for changes in the Church’s missionary praxis. 5. (22:39-46) Jesus goes to the Mount of Olives to pray, but the disciples fall asleep. 6. (22:47-53) Jesus’ fidelity contrasts with the infidelity of the world. 7. (22:54-62) Jesus’ fidelity contrasts with Peter’s denial. 8. (22:63-71). The proclamation of Jesus as Son of God contrasts with the apostasy of the religious leaders. The second half of the reading speaks directly of the passion. 1. (23:1-25) Jesus, the innocent Suffering Servant, is wronged by Pilate and handed over to death. Jesus the true Son of the Father (bar Abba) is rejected and a criminal, Barabbas, is set free. 2.(23:26-31) Disciples of all time will be like Simon of Cyrene; they will be called to carry the cross. If the world treats the innocent one with such oppression, how will it treat sinners? 3. (23:32-43) Jesus asks forgiveness for those who abuse him. 4. (23:44-56) Jesus, the Suffering Servant, accepts the Father’s will and offers himself in death, and we bear witness to this sacrifice of his life for love of us. Every phase of the passion presents both Jesus and us with the choice of a faithful acceptance of suffering or of betrayal. Jesus is always faithful and calls us to imitate him.
