We also warmly welcome Lea-Anne Clayton who was baptised in another church and asked to be received into the Catholic Church. Congratulations also to Alexia Robert, a baptised Catholic, who completed her Christian initiation through the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Easter Sunday Year C 21st April 2019 Commentary John F Craghan

Gospel (John 20: 1 - 9) John’s account of the empty tomb consists of two stories: (1) Mary Magdalene’s arrival and subsequent report and (2) the arrival of Peter and the Beloved Disciple, whose reactions differ markedly. These stories have different layers. The first originally spoke of the women, not just Mary (note ‘we’ in v.2). The second originally spoke of Peter and an unnamed disciple who was later changed to the Beloved Disciple (contrast v. 8 where the Beloved Disciple believes with v. 9 where ‘they did not understand’). For John, the Beloved Disciple explains the meaning of the empty tomb. The burial clothes pointed to the resurrection of Jesus: ‘He saw and believed.’ In contrast to Peter, he comes to faith. For John, therefore, the Beloved Disciple becomes the model to be followed. His love for Jesus has led him to believe the mystery of Jesus. Death could not be the Father’s last gesture.
