DANNY BOY AND DENNIS CHRISTIE?

What’s the link – Limavady of course! We say farewell and God’s Blessingto Dennis and the family as they move to Ahoghill and Portglenone.Dennis has been a great friend and co-worker for the gospel during histime with us in Ballymena speaking with wisdom into some of our visionplans for the Parish. He is like-minded with me in his love for the Lordand His Word and though sorry to see him go, delighted to have made andwill keep, a brother and friend in the Lord. Alongside Jen they havemade an enormous contribution to the life of the Parish over the pastyears. Men’s Fellowship, Sunday Night Youth Fellowship (The Way), toname but a few examples. Already we are talking about ways in whichthe Church of Ireland churches in and around the town might cometogether to collaborate in ministry andcelebrating our strong Christian faithand I am excited to see where God willlead us in this idea.

So Dennis – from the McConnell Clan andthe Ballymena Church Family, thankyou, God Bless you in your new ministryand my prayers and hopes under God forHis rich blessing and guidance in yournew ministry.

(P.S. – Thank you to all who make this Parish a training parish withinConnor Diocese and the wider Church of Ireland. Given the days we livein and the pressures churches and families face, training parishes arerapidly reducing in number across our church. For years Ballymena hasstood firm and generously provided a base from which the wider churchis staffed and blessed. So thank you and dig deep and keep going).

Famous Prayers

Who has not heard of Florence Nightingale -born to a wealthy life, she turned her backon a future of enforced leisure and luxury?Because nursing was all but closed to ladiesin England in the early to mid 1800’s shetravelled and trained in several hospitals inEurope before returning home in 1853 tobecome superintendent of a London Hospitalfor ‘Invalid Gentlewomen’.

Shortly after the Crimean War broke out andFlorence became a hero and legend oftenworking twenty hours a day in squalid condi-tions to care for injured troops. Forcedhome by a bout of fever she received manynational and international honours including a brooch designed by PrinceAlbert and a poem written about her by Longfellow. A devout believer, here is one of her prayers.

Where are you leading?

Oh God, you put into my heart this great desire to devote myself to thesick and sorrowful; I offer it to you. Do with it what is for your service.Oh my creator, are you leading every man of us to perfection? Or is thisonly a metaphysical idea for which there is no evidence? Is man only aconstant repetition of himself? You know that through all these twentyhorrible years I have been supported by the belief (I think I must believeit or I am sure I could not work) that I was working with you who werebringing every one of us, even our poor nurses, to perfection. O Lord, even now I am trying to snatch the management of your world from yourhands. Too little have I looked for something higher and better than myown work - the work of supreme wisdom, which uses us whether we knowit or not. Amen.

ulations to our four Beavers who were presented with their Chief ScoutBronze Awards at Crawfordsburn by Steven Donaldson the Chief Commis-sioner for Northern Ireland.

Beavers were also out and about to the People’s Park for a scavenger huntand Currell’s Avenue for a sausage sizzle. The year was rounded off witha water fun night at St Columba’s!

The Cub’s took part in a Chippy Hike with their friends from 7th Ballyme-na. They hiked round the town sampling and scoring chips purchasedfrom each chip shop along the way! Next up was District Cub Camp atShane’s Castle where Cubs enjoyed a weekend of fun, games andadventure. They cooked cake in oranges, learnt how to light fires with aflint and steel, took part in orienteering, camp fire, pioneering and muchmuch more! Congratulations to the four Cubs who were presented withtheir Chief Scout Silver Awards at Shane’ Castle by Ciaran McGrath, theCounty Commissioner. There was also the BMX competition and canoeingbefore they met for a final BBQ and canoeing session at Movanagher tofinish up the year. Congratulations to 5th Ballymena Cubs who came firstin the District Cub Pack of the Year Competition.

Scouts also had their District Camp at Shane’s Castle where they took partin canoeing, camp fire, and had great fun at Escarmouche on the assaultcourse and laser tag. There was also District surf kayaking at PortstewartStrand which they all enjoyed. They finished up the year with a BBQ andprize giving.

Congratulations to Ellie Hughes whoreceived her Chief Scout PlatinumAward from our District Commissioner,Steven Miller. We wish Ellie well overthe summer as she prepares to headoff to the Jamboree. We are alllooking forward to hearing all abouther trip when she returns.

So although we have officially finishedup until September we still haveevents happening! Our Scouts are engaged in a cross community projectwith 7th Ballymena and will be having a weekend of activities and our biggroup Summer Camp is happening in July/August! This is a week longcamp at Cladagh Glen and will involve Beavers, Cubs and Scouts. We areall looking forward to getting away and having some fun!

5th Ballymena Scout Group is a victim of its own success! Whilst it isamazing that we have grown our Scout Group to what it is today, thiscreates a problem.

Come September, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts will be running at capacity.Factors which influence capacity are the number of leaders available torun each night and the size of the meeting venue.

We have always subscribed heavily to the, ‘sure it’s only another one, what difference will one extra make’ school of thought. But we can’tcontinue to do so as we currently stand.

A waiting list has been suggested and although a fair way of doing things,it’s not getting the young people scouting. While they are on the list theyare waiting to Scout and missing out on all it has to offer.

So, what can we do? Or should we ask, what can you do to help us?

There are many ways to help. The most obvious one being to considerbecoming an assistant leader or section helper. Get registered and AccessNI checked over the summer, put on a ‘necker’ in September and join inthe fun! Come along every week, come along every other week, comealong once a month! We can create a rota so we always have the helpcoming it just varies. Don’t want to help in a section where your child ishelp in another, just take your pick and you will be welcomed with openarms.

Another option is to help out for something specific. We also would loveyou to show our young people your skills. We have badges for so muchand we would really appreciate it if you could volunteer to help out fora couple of weeks with what you are good at/know a bit about.

We are quite unique at 5th Ballymena as we have a lot of interactionbetween the sections. Leaders help out in whatever section help isneeded at any time and we all get along very well. This is such a benefitto your child as they move up as their new leaders will be familiar tothem.

So why volunteer? I personally do as my children have got so much fromScouting over the years that I feel I want to give something back. Ibelieve in its values and want to help deliver it to the next generation. It gives our young people a great start in life and teaches them skills theywould not find elsewhere. But the bottom line is its fun! We all enjoyit, have a laugh and we have a great bunch of children to work with. Wealso have a great, supportive bunch of parents!

Please have a think about how you could help and chat to us. We wouldlove to see how you could help us in any way, no matter how small. Please remember that we are not asking for a massive commitment(although that would be super!) and you can leave at any time. But Iknow you will love getting involved as much as we do. Many thanks.

Hi folks, my name is Emma Carson and Iam very excited to be joining you inBallymena as Curate in September. Letme tell you a little about myself.

I’ve lived in many places in my life but Icall Belfast home. I have been blessedwith a wonderful family who taught meto love the Lord Jesus Christ. My Dad, aclergyman, and my mum, together inministry, taught me to always be seekingto share the love of Christ. I haveworshipped in many churches since I wasa child but have worshipped in Willow-field Parish in East Belfast for several years.

Before beginning the journey to ordination I studied at Stranmillis Univer-sity College, Belfast and at the University of Edinburgh. I worked as aPrimary School teacher, teaching in various schools in both Belfast andLisburn.

I first heard the whispers of a calling to ordained ministry in my earlytwenties. Through the support of friends, family, clergy and the parish,I started to explore the Lord’s calling on my life. I began to pray forconfirmation which I received through God’s Word, through his Holy Spiritand through the support of my sponsoring Bishop, Rector and my DDO.Thus began the exciting journey that has led me here!

My heart is for the local Church. I’m passionate about seeing Churchcommunities living out their Gospel commission – to proclaim the GoodNews, to challenge the injustices of this world, to make known God’sBetter Story for the world and to fully express the love of God.

15

In June we had our annual leaders’ night out to thank everyone for alltheir hard work over the year.

Our Children's Week ‘Emojis’ was a great success. Over 40 young peopleattended each night to learn about our emotions and how to cope withour feelings face to face with Jesus. Through this we learned that God'slove is the best love that the world will ever know.

Day 1 was ‘sadness’. We learned how God was sad that there was somuch sin in the world. He wanted to get rid of sin so he sent a flood.Noah and his family and two of each animal went onto the ark and weresaved.

Day 2 was ‘scared’. Moses led the scared Israelites through the Red Seaso they could walk through and be safe.  Moses showed us that God isalways faithful and says what he is going to do.

Day 3 was ‘shy’. We looked at the story of David and Goliath and howDavid was only a small shy boy and Goliath was a giant and how God canuse anyone no matter how small or shy they are.

Page 16: Parish of Kilconriola and Ballyclug · Mothers and Toddlers will resume Tuesday 10th September. Rota for September:-Dorothy (2589 2740), Anna, Catherine and Liz A very busy few weeks

16

Day 4 was ‘worried’. Through the week we looked at being worried andhad a worry box that we used.  Being worried reminded us of Daniel inthe lions den and how God was faithful to Daniel because he had beenfaithful to God and how we should stand up for what we believe in.

Day 5 was ‘happiness and love’. We looked at the memory verse - ForGod so loved the world that he gave his one and only son that whoeverbelieves in him shall not perish but have everlasting life. This made usso happy to know that God’s love is the best love that the world will everknow.

On Saturday 22nd June we had our Family Fun Night.  We were glad theweather stayed dry and it was great to see so many people there. Thanksto everyone who helped to make it such a great night.  Special thanks toWilliam Allen Meats for the sausages and Bobby Cotter for the rolls.

Christian AidWeek 2019

Once again the parish has come up trumps! Abig thank you is due to everyone who playedany part in our somewhat extended ChristianAid Week this year.

Many of you gave generously by putting moneyin envelopes on the church plate. Otherssupported the two culinary events – either by going to the soup, cheeseand roll lunch at St Columba’s or by nipping in for a bacon butty betweenthe two morning services at St Patrick’s. Let’s not forget that neither ofthese events would have happened without a few efficient people beingready to prepare soup, to cook bacon or to set tables – so many thanks tothose willing workers. A very special thank you goes to Allen Meats whodonated the bacon for the butties. The envelopes on the church platesbrought in £1265.32 and the eating events together raised £553.01.

Thanks must also go to the stalwart few who are still willing to go out andcollect door-to-door in the area allotted to our parish. Sometimes itseems a thankless task but we need to remember that this collectionreaches people who are willing to give money to Christian Aid but don’tthemselves go to church. This year we raised £686.44 from the door-to-door collection; £686.44 that would not be there for Christian Aid’s workwithout our small but willing band of collectors.

Further thanks go to Angela and Jim who made sure that all the distinc-tive red envelopes were kept carefully together and to Colin, Peter andIrene for collecting the batches of envelopes and helping to count thedonations – large and small alike.

All together we are passing on more than £2504.77 to Christian Aid as aresult of our efforts in that special week this year. It is more than the

23

amount collected and lodged because a substantial number of the dona-tions were Gift Aided.

We are always ready to think about new ways of enhancing the way wemark and celebrate the work of Christian Aid during the special week inMay. If you have any brainwaves about how we could raise even moremoney to Assist Individuals to Develop their communities through Chris-tian Aid’s work with its partners across the globe, do please let us know. The more we raise, the greater the impact on the lives of those in need.

Emma was born on 20th March 1987 but unfortunately she died of cancerwhen she was only 32 years of age. She loved her home and her familyand it is with great sadness that we extent to them all our sinceresympathy at this time.

Hazel Elizabeth Telford

Hazel was born on 5th October 1941. Her first home was in Princes Streetand from there she went to Guy’s School and then to the Model School. She didn’t really appreciate school and she wanted to start working. Sheworked for a short time in Gallahers and G. B. Britton and Sons and thenwent to the job that she really enjoyed where she was an employee inO’Kane’s Record shop. Hazel loved meeting people in the shop and it washere that she met her future husband Billy Telford. After they gotmarried in St Patrick’s Parish Church they set up home together inanother house in Princes Street. Hazel enjoyed looking after her husbandand their two daughters Kathleen and Donna. She was happiest being atthe centre of the family gatherings and she really enjoyed their holidaystogether. Hazel, Billy and the girls then moved to a new house in KintyrePark and it was here sadly that her husband Billy passed away. This wasa really tragic time for Hazel as shemissed Billy very much but she wasan independent woman and did notcomplain conferring all of her at-tention to her growing family cir-cle. Unfortunately Hazel was laterdiagnosed with cancer but she boreher illness with great dignity. Wewould extend to her daughters,son-in-laws, sister, brother-in-law,grandchildren and great grandchil-dren our sincere sympathy at thisvery sad time.
