Thoughts of Harvest I am writing this in mid September and the lovely Indian

summer sunshine is streaming through the windows. The Autumn colours are already beginning to show on the trees in the woods of Longleat and the berries in the hedgerows are turning red. Winter, whether we like it or not, is on the way but, before it comes, let us remember with gratitude the summer that has gone and how fortunate we are to live in a temperate climate that provides us with such an abundant harvest each year.

Harvest is a time to reflect on our creative role within God’s creation. It is a time to respond to our responsibilities, under God, for all God’s creatures. Harvest Festival is still one of the best loved church festivals, although the days when whole village communities worked together to bring in the harvest disappeared with the coming of mechanisation and the combine harvester. As we approach our harvest celebrations I offer you this reflection.

At harvest we thank and praise God for all his gifts of food and weather, especially his plants which mature in Autumn and nourish us all year. Harvest is also an opportunity to give thanks and to praise God for all creatures which move in the waters, fly in the sky and live on the land. Harvest reminds us that all earth creatures are a community created to praise and glorify God. Nature matures in autumn even without human help. Wild creatures enjoy the fruits of the season. With human co-operation, however, nature glorifies God through cultivated fields, including grain and grapes which make bread and wine. Human hands and voices represent the whole earth community, in Christ, to God. The transformation of the earth at harvest is a sign, the beginning, of the final transformation of all material creation in the resurrection when God does not make a new thing, but makes ‘all things new’. ‘Next Year in Jerusalem’Canon Richard and Mrs Margaret Askew will be

leading a pilgrimage to the Holy Land next March, 17th to 27th inclusive, (this will be our 20th pilgrimage). We shall spend five days in Galilee and six in Jerusalem. The theme of our pilgrimage is provided by Jesus’ quotation – “Who do men say that I am?” A daily talk within worship, and visits to sites linked with Jesus, enable us to pursue this theme. We travel with McCabe Pilgrimages, a Christian specialist firm which

is a member of the Association of Independent Tour Operators. The tour is on a full-board basis (bar one lunch) and the all-in price is £1,645 (travel insurance, if required, is extra). Congratulations to Richard Munro, Robert and Trish Shuler who represented the parish by cycling and walking. Richard cycled 65 miles and visited over 35 churches, Robert and Trish walked 15 miles to all the churches in the parish plus Maiden Bradley. Together they have raised more than £680 for the Wiltshire Historic Churches Trust. Thank you to all who generously sponsored them supporting this charity which provides grants for our county’s beautiful churches.Jazz at Brixton

The Concert held at St Michael’s Church, Brixton Deverill on 10th September was much enjoyed by all who listened to Bob Jones and the 4+1 Jazz Band. An excellent evening’s entertainment preceded, as usual, by a superb supper in the Manor House. Special thanks are due to Johnnie and Pony Burridge for once again generously allowing us to use their house and garden; and, of course, to Janet Budgen and her team for producing such an excellent meal. Thank you to everyone who helped in many ways to make it such a success. The net profit for the church was £1,140.

The Parish News is printed at the Minster, where they have now installed a new printer. The copies produced are much clearer and of better quality. This machine collates and staples too! This means we will now no longer need to assemble groups to collate and staple each month. Some will find this a shame as it was an excuse to get together! I would sincerely like to thank all those who have helped in this way, over the years, with the production of the Parish News and acknowledge on behalf of the community our gratitude. Having a party in our rural parishes? With the 5th November soon approaching, please do not forget to let horse or livestock owners in the area know of any firework parties. Animals can soon become frightened by the loud bangs and flashes and cause untold damage to local properties. They can also break out onto the roads and cause vehicle accidents. If the owners know, they may be able to make alternative arrangements. Parish Councillors have also been approached by concerned farmers and people living in thatched houses, about the increasing problems with 'Chinese Lanterns'. These are now on sale locally and very popular at parties. Unfortunately their remains are now being picked up in fields and the metal fixings can be eaten by cattle and cause digestive problems. The burning lanterns are also extremely dangerous if they do not rise high enough and drop either on thatch or hay and straw barns. The Council does not want to stop people enjoying their parties, but please think about the rural area in which you live and have a safe time.

The next Parish Council meeting is on Monday 1st November, 7.30 pm at Longbridge Deverill Village Hall. Anyone is welcome to attend.Upper Deverills Parish Council

We are seeking views from parents, staff, children, and residents on a proposed ‘Federation’ with Heytesbury School. I know the word ‘Federation’ will alarm some of you, but let me re-assure you – this is purely a merger of the Governing Bodies. There are bound to be quite a few questions, so we have put together ‘Questions and

Answers’, which with the ‘Consultation’ document, is available on the school web site: http://www.crockerton.wilts.sch.uk/proposed-federation. Recipe of the Month Sponsored by Maiden Bradley Community Shop (844206)Everyday Brownies – makes 16150 gms unsalted butter 300 gms light brown muscovado sugar75 gms sifted cocoa powder 150 gms plain flour1 teaspoon bicarbonate soda Pinch salt4 large eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract150 gms milk chocolate, small chunks Icing sugar to dust (optional)1 foil lined baking tin approx 30 cm x 20 cm x 5 cmMethod - Preheat oven to 190ºC/gas 5Melt butter over a gentle heat in medium sized pan, when melted add sugar, stir with wooden spoon (over low heat) to help it blend with butter.Sift together cocoa powder, flour, bicarb. and salt, stir into pan, when mixed (this will be very dry mixture) and wholly blended, remove from the heat.In a bowl, whisk eggs with vanilla extract then mix into brown mixture.Stir in the chopped chocolate, quickly pour into baking tin, spread mixture evenly and cook in preheated oven for 20 – 25 minutes.It will look set, dark and dry on top but when you feel the surface you will sense it is still wobbly underneath. A cake tester will come out gungy, this is desirable.Transfer the tin onto rack to cool before cutting into 16, then dust with icing sugar. Store in airtight container, will keep for 5 days.Wine - Steak Out

I have mixed memories of my only trip to Argentina. Having been picked up from Mendoza airport by a producer, I was then driven to the wine estate, predictably in the middle of nowhere, and left there for the night on my own. I was shown the kitchen where they had left me a loaf of bread and some ham (not even steak) and then my bedroom which contained very little. Thankfully it did contain a bottle of Malbec, Argentina’s most popular grape variety, which kept me going through the lonely and slightly scary night. Needless to say, having spent one night trapped in the middle of nowhere, the next night I checked into a hotel in Mendoza. With high altitude vineyards providing cool breezes to maintain all that lovely fruit, Argentina produces some cracking wines. But the world’s 5th largest producer accounts for only 1% of wine sales in the UK. Track down a bottle of Finca Flichman ‘Gestos’ Shiraz from Waitrose, reduced from £7.19 to £5.79 during October. Rich blackberry fruit, black pepper and tobacco. Yum. Do as the Argentinians do and savour it with a great big steak, or an autumnal venison casserole.

-11-Where have you been?Archangel, 1 King Street, Frome(01373 456111; website www.archangelfrome.com)

It was a damp Wednesday lunchtime in Frome and we were both in desperate need of something to cheer us up before we continued with our shopping. Our eyes suddenly lit upon an apparition on the corner of King Street. But what was it? Was it a bar? A restaurant? An hotel? The answer is all of the above. Archangel has been created from an old inn called ‘The Angel’ which, as they say on their website, was a dilapidated old coaching inn. They have used natural and sympathetic materials throughout – it really is an impressive building. You enter via the arch of the old coaching inn; to your left is a cosy bar and to your right a lounge bar with huge velvet sofas (where they apparently serve tapas). You continue along an old cobbled street into the yard, there is a long bar on your left and the restaurant on your right.

We went into the bar and said we would like to eat but only wanted starters. We were offered a snack menu in that bar or we were told we could go into the main restaurant; we opted for the latter. We were so glad that we did because the room itself was amazing and they were very welcoming, even though we made clear we only wanted a first course. We were shown to a table next to a wall of glass, overlooking an outside courtyard. The restaurant was busy and buzzing. It is a fascinating space. Everywhere there is light, zinc, wood and glass but also a sense of history: the room is double height and its walls are those of the original medieval barn. But rather surreally, apparently suspended above it, is The Cube, a free floating mezzanine with dining space for twelve. Our starters were delicious and we were sorely tempted to stay for a full meal not least to absorb more of the architecture but we were constrained by time. The menu is changed daily and majors on local food (John Hurd’s watercress is on the menu); I believe you can even get cream teas there. We will definitely go back and have a proper meal.

Stop press: I hear that the Somerset Arms at Maiden Bradley is currently being run on a short term (three month) tenancy awaiting a decision on the re-letting of the lease – go and give them your support. The burgers are the best in Wiltshire!

As many of you are aware, The Beckford Arms suffered a severe fire in July. They plan to re-open in Spring/Summer of 2011.

Nature NotesIt is very quiet here now. For almost 5 months we have had

swallows and house martins flying around in great numbers calling to each other continually; they have all left us. It is always sad to see them go but they have had a good breeding season here. The last house martin nest emptied on Saturday, 11th September, and sadly the youngest chick did not become airborne. Despite throwing it up into the air to try and get it to fly, climbing the ladder and putting it back in the nest several times and finally bringing it in and attempting to feed it, it died. It was very small, still with a lot of down and quite thin; the odds were stacked against it. I think the parents realised that is was a lost cause as it appeared that they

had abandoned it. The swallows were absent from the garage at the end of August; about 10 days before the house martins left us. In the spring the swallows arrived about 10 days before the house martins so they seem to

keep to a 10 day gap!The hedgerows are full of fruit; lots of rosehips,

sloes, blackberries, hawthorn berries and hazelnuts. As soon as the rowan berries turned red on the tree in the garden, the blackbirds started to feed on them. I reckon half of them have disappeared already. Both the pyracantha and cotoneaster in the garden have a good number of berries this year too.

We have had some very young house sparrows with obvious gape and fluffy down in the garden still being fed. I think this to be quite late in the year. We have also got some young pheasant chicks about; two families, one of two and one of five. We only saw them when they became ‘miniature adults’ and not in the very young fluffy stage. The hen pheasants have done well to rear them out in the wild and had obviously kept them well hidden until they were big enough to fend for themselves, though even now they don’t stray far from their mum.

This morning when I called the cat in at the back door, a sparrow hawk came and landed on the shed roof right in front of me. It was almost as if it had been trained to come to a call, probably just coincidence. It did not fly off straightaway, as I expected it to. I talked to it first and it checked me over before casually flying off. It will be interesting to see if it responds to a call again!

I have walked up the lane several times in the late evening recently and caught badgers out feeding. One evening there were about five out, they appeared to be quite small so probably youngsters born earlier this year. Badgers will have had a difficult time feeding this summer with the ground being so hard and dry and earthworms out of reach in the deeper moister soil. They will be tucking into the feast available in the hedgerows now and building up fat reserves for the winter ahead.
